The Shocking Truth Revealed: Sports Fans Are Geeks

The older I got as a kid, the more it became obvious that there was a growing social divide between me and some of the other kids in my class.

I was getting more and more into comics and the like while holding onto my passion for giant transformer robots.

Other kids, however, were getting more and more into sports.

I’m not saying geek and sports fan are mutually exclusive, just that, for the most part, it’s ok to be in public and not to be the other.

At least, way back in the day it was. Times, they do a’change.

Still, looking at the rabid fan bases that geekly pursuits and athletics inspire, I have to say, there’s isn’t that much difference between the two sets of people.

Not much at all really…

YOE BOOKS Teams Up To Save The Lives of Millions of Children With Superheroes

This year, Comic-Con shows its caring side with a panel about superheroes who save lives – not in comic books or on the silver screen but in real life. Cartoonist Craig Yoe will be joined by Stacie June of Unilever’s health soap brand Lifebuoy, to talk about how the ‘School of 5’ superheroes primarily through their comic books (along with School of 5 animation, radio shows, music, games, and walk-around characters) are saving the lives of children across the world by changing handwashing behaviors.

Every 15 seconds, one child dies from diarrhoea or pneumonia, diseases that are preventable through the simple act of handwashing with soap. That is 1.7 million children every year.

Yoe, and his partner Clizia Gussoni, worked with Lifebuoy to create the team of ‘School of 5’ superheroes and their adventures, capturing the imaginations of kids, teaching them to wash their hands five times a day and to get their parents and siblings in the program, too. The handful of superheroes are Sparkle, the big sister-type and the wise leader of the gang, Hairyback, a big furry and lovable master of bubbles, and the germ-busting triplets Biff, Bam and Pow. These 5 superheroes work together to bring this lifesaving habit to life and fight the yuckiest villain of all, the evil Nogood.

Who Wants To Stay In Room 237?

Whenever I travel for business or pleasure I always have friends stay at my house so they can act as a deterrent for potential house burglars (I don't really care about their safety so much as the safety of my movie and video game collection). But merely handing them a loose key to my home seems somehow uneventful, especially since my abode is filled with such awesomeness that house-sitting is like vacationing inside the mind of a twelve-year old with ADD (we have a lot of stuff).

So, to keep my precious key safe and to create a sense of mystery and intrigue for the lucky person who will sit on my couch for multiple days, it only seems appropriate to attach said key to tag that represents me, the home-owner:

Yep, I'm leaving my dwelling in the capable hands of someone holding a Camp Crystal Lake key...although, I'm not quite sure if having such a key tag will somehow allow Jason to emerge through a tear in the fantasy/nightmare realm whereby he attacks the house sitter....we do live in a forest though...hmmm, maybe I should have gone for the Bates Motel one:

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY (CONCERT EDITION): The Sex Pistols Play The Longhorn in Dallas 1978

On December 10th 1978 The Sex Pistols played at The Longhorn in Dallas, Texas, a place where punk music wasn't known to have a following but Merle Haggard did (as seen from the Longhorn marquee):

Seeing how a vast majority of people living in Texas are afraid of anything different (I know, I lived there for ten years) the SWAT team was assembled in order to stop the rioting that they felt would accompany the concert while a crowd of Country and Western fans paid money to fill the place in order to protect their favorite venue from some British Punk Rockers (although, to be fair about 1800 actual fans of the band did turn up as well).

Most of the evening was spent with the band openly hating one another and antagonizing the crowd between songs, most notably Sid Vicious yelling "All cowboys are queer!" which, is kind of a way to get your ass kicked in Texas (he was also head-butted in the nose by a chick).

All-in-all it a good concert in a weird-ass venue...of course the band broke up like a week later, so maybe Texas wasn't a good choice after-all.

I don't know anything on the planet that feels quite as good as saying a bad word when you are a kid. The rush of endorphins, the overwhelming feeling of naughtiness, the thrill of being bad...forget drinking and doing drugs, forget having sex...when you are ten years old and yell out the word "FUCK!!!" in front your friends, that is the best you will ever feel in your life.

Trust me.

And to celebrate that indescribable emotion from cursing while underage is a Supercut of young kids saying bad words in the movies.

God, I miss being a kid...video after the break.

Hackivist HC
Creator: Alyssa Milano
Writers: Jackson Lanzing & Collin Kelly
Artist: Marcus To
Colorist: Ian Herring
Letters: Deron Bennett
Publisher: Archaia
Price: $24.99
Release Date: July 16, 2014

Hacker stories are a dime a dozen, but Alyssa Milano, yes, that Alyssa Milano, has presented a fresh premise that is engaging and ties into all of the concerns we have about social media.

Our story follows Ed Hiccox and Nate Graft, who by day, are brilliant young cofounders of YouLife social networking company.

By night, they are the notorious hackers ‘sve_Urs3lf,’ who help those in need. Their friendship is the crux of the story as their back and forth comes across as two actors with great chemistry with one another.

Nate is a charismatic maverick and Ed is the strong silent type. Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly's dialog does a great job of not insulting the reader’s intelligence by not inserting random tech speak so the story can feel like a high tech drama.

One of the many things the book does right is not making YouLife a Facebook clone, which would have made it easy to ignore. Instead, the company has its own voice and therefore becomes a character you can’t ignore. Most of us have seen the various warnings on how social media is infiltrating our lives while working for the government.

Well, the CIA’s version of freedom in this story makes our fears well founded, and the writers draw on that as tensions escalate domestically and abroad. Nate doesn't see the big deal while Ed believes otherwise. Depending on your personal view of privacy, you might find yourself siding with one over the other. The narrative is laid out in a way where there is no real clear cut answer as to who’s right or wrong with bread crumbs leading in either direction.

The talented hand of Marcus To knows no bounds. Emotion, body language, page layouts, action, beauty, and style are all illustrated with an expertise that captures the whole essence of the project. I can’t imagine the creative team being any happier with the results and Ian Herring’s coloring is the cherry on top.

There is a cool interview at the end of the book with a former hacker, giving their take on the story along with some of their personal tales. You would think this was done just to give the book some street credit, but you get the sense that they very much enjoyed what they read, which makes it more authentic.

This hardcover collects all four issues and reads much better as a collected work because waiting a month between releases might have dulled your excitement because there so much is going on and you might forget a tidbit or two.

Archaia seems to be allergic to producing anything but comic book gold and Hackivist is just another shining example of the publisher’s standard excellence in the genre.

Score: 10/10

In Rok Predin's newest animation, One of A Kind, the audience is treated to a jolly party that suddenly turns into weirdly intricate ride that plays with narrative, history and the time/space continuum (featuring everything from Modern Man all the way to the origins of life).

Beautifully animated in a way that will bring you to tears (seriously, this thing is spectacularly lovely) and narrated by Downton Abbey’s Jim Carter (Mr Carson), One of A Kind is easily going to become one of your favorite animated shorts of the year.

The Room's Tommy Wiseau Is Now Designing Underwear...Hopefully It Won't Tear You Apart

Tommy Wiseau, the only man for whom irony and sarcasm slides off of like Teflon, has created a line of underwear because...well, why not right? Designed to look like a cross between the Tommy Hilfiger line and a Superhero costume (and featuring a hidden pocket for your meth packet- I'm assuming) there is absolutely no doubt these fashion undies will be a huge hit with the kids (and will probably give them a wicked yeast infection that no amount of Monistat 7 will relieve).

I would say more about these undies but why should I compete with Wiseau's eloquent ad that somehow manages to combine a trailer for his never-to-be-seen sitcom The Neighbors and a drunken underwear party?

What an auteur.

The Zombie Survival Guide For Zombies

When the Zombie Apocalypse happens we all hope that we will be one of the survivors, but let's be realistic here. Sure, if we're lucky, we might be able to stay human for a year or so, but eventually some undead neighbor will break into our basement compound and start eating us before we are able to kill it and then what?

Are just supposed to just give up?

I'm sorry, but even as a member of the Walking Dead I would still like the option of watching my collection of DVDs or playing Cards Against Humanity with my zombie friends in-between chomping down on small, defenseless children and frankly, I will need some guidance on how to adjust to this new lifestyle.

Thankfully, as graduation project at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, former students Bettina Gericke and Chris Meyer have created a survival guide for the newly zombified that will help with the transition.

So watch it now and take some notes because when the time comes for you to become a monster, you might not have a pen handy.

Todd's Truly Trivial Tidbits: HEAVY METAL EDITION (this list goes to 11)...

I'm no Eddie Trunk, but I've been known to dive into the Oft-Misunderstood world of Heavy Metal music, beginning early with a Kiss fascination.

So, here I am, about to rock you with a hurricane of some pretty geeky Heavy Metal factoids.

For those about to read, I salute you...

1) Bryan Adams, Metal God
While he never really went Metal himself (Summer of 666 anyone?), Adams did contribute a handful of numbers for less-squeaky-clean performers, like Krokus, Kiss, and my personal favorite, Mötley Crüe.

By 1997, mega-rockers Mötley Crüe had failed to capture the record and tour sales their label enjoyed in the 80s.  So they brought back Vince Neil to lead their vocals, who had last been heard on their 1989 Dr. Feelgood.  Their seventh album Generation Swine attempted to mix harder rock with some very overproduced pop and electronic influences.

The highlight of the album, however, is the extremely un-Mötley power-ballad "Glitter."  Not only is it co-written by Adams, but backing vocals and guitar are supplied by Rick Nielsen and Robin Zander of Cheap Trick.  From its very un-Mötley opening synth-loops to its aerosol-emotion chorus, it's truly an awkward guilty pleasure.

One year after the failure of Generation Swine, a Greatest Hits album was pressed containing a more typical power-ballad remix of "Glitter" that removes the synthesizer completely.  The album was reissued in 2009 and removed the song completely.

FOG! Chats With EVANGELINE LILLY

Interview conducted by Sharon Knolle

Since leaving Lost behind, Evangeline Lilly hasn't given up acting as she once threatened to do, but making films like The Hobbit and Real Steel has allowed her to follow her other pursuits, including writing. The actress's first book, the cautionary children's tale The Squickerwonkers hits bookstores on November 18. In this dark fairy tale, a little girl named Selma encounters the odd sideshow creatures of the title at a fair.

It's a project Lilly first dreamed up as a teenager, but it only became a reality thanks to the creative minds she met while making The Hobbit, especially Johnny Fraser-Allen, a senior sculptor and conceptual designer at Weta Workshop, who jumped at the chance to illustrate her book.

Before Lilly's Comic-Con 2014 appearance, I was able to talk with her about The Squickerwonkers, what to expect from the final Hobbit film and which of her Lost costars she's still closest to.
