Review by Elizabeth Weitz
Produced by Joe Manganiello, Nick Manganiello, C.C. Hang,
Harrison Kordestani, Raymond Mansfield, Shaun Redick
Directed by Joe Manganiello
Starring Joe Manganiello, Randy “Master Blaster” Ricks,
Lance Winters, Nick Soto

For those of you who watch Steven Soderbergh's Magic Mike on a regular basis and dream of slipping around a stage with a hard-bodied dude dressed as a Police officer, you're in luck, because Joe Manganiello (who played Big Dick Richie in Magic Mike and the upcoming sequel) has made his directorial debut in a documentary all about the guys of La Bare, one of the most famous men's strip clubs in the country.

Featuring some tasty specimens of beefcake (including 34-year veteran, Randy "Master Blaster" Ricks, who has not only maintained a body of a thirty year-old but also acts as a mentor to the other dancers) the film tentatively illuminates the life of the men who make the women go crazy.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Fury Eyes- The Creatures

As much as I love Siouxsie and the Banshees (and trust me, I do) I have always felt that Siouxsie Sioux's side band (with Banshee member Budgie) The Creatures, produced a deeper, more profound music that connected with my angsty teenage self. Especially their 1989 album Boomerang which, if I can be a bit over-sharey here, helped me get through some serious heartbreak after being rejected by a dude I had held in high regard since I was twelve years-old.

But I digress.

Filled with weirdly orchestrated arrangements and lyrics that are far more political and poetic than one would normally become acquainted with while living in suburbia, Boomerang provided a severe counterpoint to the frothy pop crap that permeated the late 80s Top 40 list which was the norm in my small hometown.

Happily, the album sounds just as fresh today as it did some 24 years ago, so check out my favorite song, Fury Eyes, after the break to get a taste, and, if you liked it, buy it HERE . It puts the crap of today to shame..seriously.

If you are a fan of made-up characters beating the shit out of one another than you should probably catch the web-series Super Power Beat Down, a debate/live-action fighting show that takes the various characters from your favorite comics, movies and video games and has them splatter each other until one emerges victorious.

In the latest installment Red Hood takes on The Punisher (who is still a bit peeved about his family's murder) and...well, you get the drill (blood, mucus and death).

After the break is the carnage, but don't forget to check out the other episodes HERE.

My money is on The Punisher...that dude has some serious issues.

Television's Underappreciated Sleuths: HARDCASTLE AND McCORMICK

Strolling down the great pantheon of television’s sleuths, we can see the powerful busts of its most notable players like Magnum, Rockford, Fletcher, Kojak, and Columbo; all true masters of mystery solving and general badassary.

However, off to the side is a smaller hall that people don’t visit; where oil paintings hang of TV detectives that aren’t as notable but just as significant.   To the left we can see a piece called “The Brothers Simon” depicting Simon & Simon solving a crime in a hot air balloon.

Next to that is a piece called “Ironside” depicting the detective rolling down a dark alley in his trademark wheelchair.

… and finally, one’s eyes fall on an interesting portrait depicting two men leaning on a candy-apple red racecar.  One, an older, barrel-chested man in a blue ballcap looks on with a serious look in his eyes.  The other, a younger man with curly hair, smirks directly at us.

The title?

LOST KUBRICK: A Short Documentary That Looks At The Unfinished Films Of Stanley Kubrick

Fans of Stanley Kubrick already know of his methodical film making regimen which led to the creation of some of the most enduring and beloved films known to man, but it is the unmade movies that the auteur left behind that leaves people wondering what should ultimately become of them.

In this short documentary narrated by Malcolm McDowell and featuring interviews with Jack Nicholson, Sydney Pollack and Kubrick's long-time producer Jan Harlan (among others) we get an in-depth look at those unfinished films that were an obsession for Kubrick (most notably movies about Napoleon, The Aryan Papers and A.I.- which ultimately went to Steven Spielberg, with Kubrick's blessing) as well as look at a man for whom film making was not just a career, but a way of discovering himself.

ANIMATION GEEK: Strange Wonderful by Stephanie Swart

In Stephanie Swart's weirdly soothing animated short, Strange Wonderful, a tiny monster spends her school day day dreaming.

Now, I understand that no one wants to be reminded of school while Summer Vacation is still happening, but judging by how some stores are already putting out school supplies as a reminder that the season of heat and fun is fast approaching its end point, I figure it's as good a time as any to support creative thinking during those hours when one should be getting their learning on.

Even a small rebellion still counts as anarchy people.

Terrific animation after the break.

Let's All Watch Some Ice Cream Melt And Call It A Day Shall We?

Today I woke up to my in-box filled with various accounts of how awesome Weird Al's parody video, Tacky was and how I should write about it, which leads me to believe that it will be just as annoying as the original source material (Pharrell's Happy). So, instead of doing anything remotely Tacky/Happy with my Tuesday, I'm just going to watch a time-lapse video of ice cream melting.

If you care to join me in a very zen moment of watching frozen cream return to a liquid state instead of being bombarded with a video that will soon be forwarded to you by your grandmother, then follow my lead after the break.

Let's hope we can all return to the comfort of cat videos tomorrow.

Chairmutants of the Board — X-FACTOR Reborn as a Corporate Backed Strike Force

It’s hard to believe there was ever a time where there weren’t over a dozen issues of X-Men related content hitting the shelves each month.

Heck, right now, it seems that if Marvel has a book that’s not tied to the Avengers, chances are it’s tied to their mutant heroes.

“Amazing,” “uncanny,” “all-new,” the adjectives for X-Men fly fast and furious every month and that’s not even counting solo characters like Cyclops and Wolverine getting their own books and teams like X-Force still going strong.

It’s getting to the point where I’m pretty sure I might be getting my own title soon enough just for reading all of the others, which, let’s be honest here, would be damn sweet.  While you finish reading this, I’m going to go try on some spandex in anticipation.

You’re welcome for that imagery.

There should be one of these down the hall if you need it…

In 1983, New Mutants joined Uncanny X-Men as the only other mutant book available and just three years later, X-Factor exploded onto the scene, boasting a lineup comprised of the original five X-Men, complete with a newly resurrected Jean Grey, last seen going suicidal on the moon at the culmination of the Dark Phoenix Saga.

I've been trying to avoid doing any writing on Star Wars these days as the topic seems to be everywhere (and I'm a firm believer that the more you talk about something involving Pop Culture, the less valuable it becomes) but this particular video of a very smooth dancing R2D2 strutting his stuff to some Michael Jackson songs is too good to pass up (and to be honest with you, I'm a sucker for anything MJ-related).

So, here it is in all its glory...god I'm weak.

Michael Bay Might Actually Be A Genius

$

It’s possible that everything we believe about Michael Bay as a film director is completely wrong.

Despite his reputation for making plot-less movies with big explosions, he may have keener insight into the cultural of Hollywood movies than most people.

His latest movie, Transformers: Age of Extinction, is remarkable for several reasons.

First, and most impressively, Bay has proven that you don’t actually need actors to make a top-grossing movie.

In theater, TV and especially film, we fetishize the role of actors.

Despite the fact that they are just a member of an extremely large creative team, that the performances they give are hugely shaped by screenwriters, editors, directors, makeup artists, etc., we treat them as the primary creative force in a movie.

The importance we assign to them can be seen in everything from the disproportionate amount of pay they receive, to their billing, to how award shows are primarily focused on the acting awards.

And studios willingly participate in this — and why they pay salaries in excess of $20 million — because they think we pick which movies to see based on who’s staring in it.

RIFFTRAX LIVE!: SHARKNADO (review)

Review by Kate Davis
“Welcome to Tara-dise, bitches!”

If you haven’t been to a live Rifftrax event yet, you’re hardcore missing out.

There’s an electricity that buzzes in the audience while waiting, with baited breath, for Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett to come out on stage.

Unfamiliar with Rifftrax?

Do these names sound familiar?

That’s because these three guys are known for their work on the cult-show Mystery Science Theater 3000.

These days, they’ve manifested themselves as Rifftrax, a trio of grown-ass men making jokes over (mostly) bad movies.

They tend to riff flicks like Twilight and Wicker Man (of the Nic Cage variety, of course) as well as B-Movies most of us have never heard of.

You can buy them, stream them, and in this case, watch them live.

Sharknado, a Syfy flick directed by Anthony C. Ferrante, is a self aware film about… a tornado full of… yeah, you know.
