60 Regional Foods You Shouldn't Eat Anywhere Else

$

This week would have been the start of my vacation had a tree not decided to fall on my house last week and destroy my master bathroom (and a pair of my underwear if I may be blunt...a tree crashing into your bedroom area at 3am does not leave one's panties intact). And since my vacation plans included driving to Maine for a lobster roll and clam strips at Red's Eats it seems only apropos that this offering from Mental Floss deals entirely with regional foods popular with states (and cities) that people will be traveling to this summer.

My hope is that after my PTSD abates and the bathroom is not accessible from the outside, I will make it up to the Pine Tree State for some over-priced shellfish. But until that day occurs, I'll just live vicariously through this trivia masterpiece.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Simon & Garfunkel's 'The Sound of Silence' As Performed By Floppy Drives

Let's face it, Mondays are simply horrible, but a Monday during the summer is even worse. Especially if the temperatures rise to a point where being outside, soaking in Vitamin D and melanoma, is violently preferable to sitting in a meeting that contributes nothing to society.

And seeing that there are probably many of us avoiding work by searching airbnb for decently priced condos to rent in exotic locales, I'm guessing that a whimsical music video featuring several floppy drives covering The Sound of Silence from Simon and Garfunkel would be a wonderful distraction from the cubicle farm.

So go ahead, fill up your water bottle with Crystal Light Margarita-flavored powder drink mix, kick off your closed-toe shoes and take a few minutes to drift away from all of life's little stresses.

It's like taking a mini-break for your soul.

I'm Fine

As this is the start of the week and I am unable to muster any creative gusto other than looking at cat videos, I figure that eight warning signs of addiction as illustrated by a feline is probably the best that you will be getting from me today. I apologize for my laziness. Just know that by tomorrow, I will be back to performing at a higher rate of service than any of you deserve...also, I will be less bitchy.

Video after the break...and if any of these signs help you recognize your own addiction then I am happy to have helped.

Flashback to A World I Never Saw Before: DENVER THE LAST DINOSAUR

Welcome to the twelfth installment of Flashback to the Present.  I’ll be your contributing writer, Charles Knauf.

After parking my Bugatti, I stride through my glass enclosed beach house overlooking the Pacific Ocean.  I pour a snifter of Louis the 13th, loosen my Hermes tie, and slide into my custom Eileen Gray chair and gaze into the sunset.

I can’t forget that tune.

Even at the top; after I’ve laid waste to my enemies, climbed the tallest corporate summits, and made friends of both kings and sultans, I still have one tune I simply cannot forget.  There’s one tune that crawls around my head and troubles my deepest thoughts.

I launch up in fury!  Why does this song not leave me?

I smash my tumbler into the fireplace and, when they approach, dismiss the bevy of stunning women stating, “It’s alright; nothing but a bad memory. Please make you way to the guest mansion and leave me to my thoughts.”

But it isn’t alright.  That tune…

After the mansion is quiet, I finally succumb to the lyrics just as the ever fading sunset turns from orange to red to purple.

Denver the Last Dinosaur… He's my friend and a whole lot more.  Denver the Last Dinosaur
Shows me a world I never saw before.”

Losing LeBron (review)

Review by Dean Galanis
Produced by Nicole Hart, Maria Menounos,
Allyson Sherlock, Keven Undergaro
Directed by Nicole Hart, Allyson Sherlock

A brief (just under an hour in length) but very engaging documentary about LeBron James’ leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for the Miami Heat in 2010, Losing LeBron examines not only Cleveland’s reaction to the move, but the psychology of a city’s sports fans coping with the fact that none of their three professional sports franchises has won a championship in 50 years.

Losing LeBron follows a handful of fans during the first season after LeBron’s leaving.  A stand-up comedian, a sports writer, a father and his grown son just trying to make ends meet, a doctor, etc. all weigh in on The Decision.   The film examines – and provides an explanation - early on how even that title of LeBron’s ESPN live special, which featured LeBron’s announcement, was not only obviously arrogant and ludicrously egotistical, but also a cruel slap in the face to a city with a history of horrible sports moments, many of them perfect examples of defeat snatched from the jaws of victory.

Live Like A Member of the Rat Pack In This Mid-Century Modern Beauty Called the Caddyshack In Swanky Las Vegas

When we often think of vacation homes the visual most of us come up with is either some exotic beach resort or a timber-rich mountain vista. But very few of us look westward toward the tawdry arid land of the deliciously decadent city known as Las Vegas for a lifetime of R and R.

Sure, as a getaway casino hop, Vegas is a destination spot that makes sense, but to make it a permanent home-away-from-home seems, well, a bit fantastical. But sometimes when a desert meets lady luck, something beautiful happens.

And that beauty is called Caddyshack (no, not the 80s movie, the mid-century modern Las Vegas classic that will make you sweat gin from your nether regions):

Built in 1962, Caddyshack was part of the very first planned community (Paradise Palms) in Vegas that offered the style of homes that to this day are coveted by those people who would kill their family members just for the opportunity to sweep the octagonal tiles of a mid-century foyer.

I'm a t-shirt whore and I'm not afraid to admit it. Especially when it comes to t-shirts that trigger some weirdly nostalgic aspect of myself that represents a more innocent time in my life.

And yes, when a clothing company has me weeping into my bowl of Cocoa Pebbles over a Stephen King Rules t-shirt from the movie The Monster Squad:

You bet your ass I'm going to "accidentally forget" to pay my cable bill so I can stock up.

content featuring interviews with the all-star cast!
In Transcendence, Dr. Will Caster (Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of artificial intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him.

However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed—to be a participant in his own transcendence. For his wife Evelyn (Rebecca Hall) and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany), both fellow researchers, the question is not if they can…but if they should.

Their worst fears are realized as Will’s thirst for knowledge evolves into a seemingly omnipresent quest for power, to what end is unknown. The only thing that is becoming terrifyingly clear is there may be no way to stop him.

“My, What Big Pretty Wings You Have”:

Were it not for the vivacious Angelina Jolie, Maleficent would be indistinguishable from the spate of other recent live-action, big-budget, CG-heavy retellings of storybook classics. Jolie enlivens every moment, aided considerably by wardrobe and by her digitally augmented features—spookily irradiated eyes, high and sharp cheekbones, a tall pair of spiraling horns, and most of all a magnificent set of outstretched wings.

Though clear and obvious digital effects, Maleficent’s gorgeous fluttering wings add authority to her every scene (until the villain hacks them off, that is).

In honor of those fine feathered fixtures, here are some recollections of other cinematic characters where man (or woman) takes wing.

This shirt is awesome twofold.  First, I'm beyond psyched to see The Flash coming to television next season.  As a longtime fan of the character, I'm looking forward to watching Barry Allen fight crime in Central City.

Second, my last name is "Blitz" which is German for "lightning."  I might not be a part of The Flash's Speed Force, but I have a t-shirt that represents my name iconically.

Star Wars Jabba Pop Vinyl Bobblehead

Now that Star Wars Episode VII is in production, I'm a little giddy about what creature characters are coming back.  Will we see Hammerhead or Snaggletooth?  Bib Fortuna?  Ewoks? Tauntauns?

Hutts?  This adorable little reminder of the mighty Jabba is fantastic, right down to his drool and wayward tongue.

Win Deborah Coate's HALLIE MICHAELS TRILOGY (Including STRANGE COUNTRY!)

$

Deborah Coates' Strange Country, the third book in her widely acclaimed rural fantasy trilogy featuring psychic Hallie Michaels is available now and thanks to our friends at Tor, we're giving away all three titles in the trilogy to a Forces of Geek reader.

Wide Open

When Sergeant Hallie Michaels comes back to South Dakota from Afghanistan on ten days' compassionate leave, her sister Dell's ghost is waiting at the airport to greet her.

The sheriff says that Dell's death was suicide, but Hallie doesn't believe it. Something happened or Dell's ghost wouldn't still be hanging around. Friends and family, mourning Dell's loss, think Hallie's letting her grief interfere with her judgment.

The one person who seems willing to listen is the deputy sheriff, Boyd Davies, who shows up everywhere and helps when he doesn't have to.

As Hallie asks more questions, she attracts new ghosts, women who disappeared without a trace. Soon, someone's trying to beat her up, burn down her father's ranch, and stop her investigation.

Hallie's going to need Boyd, her friends, and all the ghosts she can find to defeat an enemy who has an unimaginable ancient power at his command.

Deep Down

Now that she's solved her sister's murder, Hallie Michaels has left the army and isn't sure what to do next. Her relationship with deputy Boyd Davies is tentative, there's still distance between her and her father, and she needs a job. The good news is, she hasn't seen a ghost in weeks.

All that changes when she gets a call asking her to help an elderly neighbor who is being stalked by black dogs, creatures from the underworld that are harbingers of death. When a black dog appears, Hallie learns, a reaper is sure to follow. And if the dark visions she's suddenly receiving are any indication, it looks like the reaper is now following her.

Meanwhile, strange events herald the arrival of ghosts from Boyd's past, ghosts the young deputy isn't ready to face. Refusing Hallie's help, Boyd takes off to deal with the problem on his own, only to find that he's facing something much larger and more frightening than he'd imagined. Stalked by a reaper and plagued by dark visions, Hallie finds she must face her fears and travel into Death's own realm to save those she most loves.

Strange Country

After facing Death himself and banishing a reaper bent on the destruction of Sheriff's deputy Boyd Davies, Hallie had hoped things would finally settle down; that she and Boyd would find more time to spend together, that ghosts would stay in cemeteries where they belong. But hopes are so easily dashed.

On a wintry night in mid-December, someone shoots and kills a woman with a high-powered rifle. Not long after, another of West Prairie City’s citizens is killed in exactly the same way, drawing the attention of federal investigators. But the connection between the victims is not easy to uncover....

Meanwhile, Hallie Michaels finds a note pinned to her front porch. “What do you fear most?” it asks, accompanied by a set of map coordinates. Over the next few days she receives an anonymous phone call, an unsigned letter left for her at the local ag supply, and finally a note stuck to her kitchen table with a carving knife, all asking the same question and with the same set of coordinates. The mysteries are piling up, and time is short...Will Hallie be able to get to the bottom of this, before the body count rises again?

Enter after the jump!

"ARE YOU READY FOR THE SUMMER?" Hit Pause On Adulthood And Head Back to Summer Camp This Year At Camp Grounded

$

It's interesting to me that as we grow up there is nothing that we want more than to be an adult and experience the freedom that we observe in our parents and, once we reach that mythical age, all we want to do is go back to those glorious days of childhood and experience the freedom that we didn't know we had.

I would say that life is ironic, but really, it's more of an asshole.

But I don't see any reason why we can't meld those two aspects of our lifespan to have a little taste of euphoria, and perhaps the way to achieve that perfect balance is to head back to that one little area that held the key to happiness...SUMMER CAMP.

For those who went to it (and those, like me, who yearned to go), summer camp was that magical period of time when you were away from your parents, your assigned spot on the social ladder and your own detrimental self-loathing. At summer camp you could start over and become anyone you wanted to be (hell, it was like the social media of an analog age) and right now, there's no better time to go back.

And at Camp Grounded you can.

Serve Up A Memorable Dinner Party With the MONKEY BRAINS BOWL

I'm not sure there was a grosser image of supper time in a kid's life than the iconic dinner party in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. For me, the sequence made me a bit queasy but was still enjoyable, for my brother, it was barf time (especially the eyeball soup) and to this day, he will not watch it.

Which means I am so getting him this Monkey Brains Bowl ($60) so that I can continue to torture him like only a big sister can:

Of course, the best way to present him with his gift is to fill it with some sort of cherry dessert and set it in front of him...hmmm, perhaps a nice cherry cobbler.

Yeah, that would probably be for the best.

(Note: Bowl is not dishwasher safe so you're going to have to hand-wash the noggin of a monkey...think of it as a bonus gift)

HOW TO DO VISUAL COMEDY (Like Edgar F*cking Wright)

In this incredibly well done analysis of the brilliant visual comedy direction by director Edgar Wright, Tony Zhou explains why most of the comedy offerings from Hollywood is an example of lazy film-making, and how, if those in charge could only take some inspiration from what Wright is doing, we, the audience, could experience a full-blown comedic explosion that would kick our asses.

I don't hold out much hope of that ever happening, but I truly appreciate what Zhou is saying...and so will you.
