Is NAMOR, THE SUB-MARINER Appearing in IRON MAN 3?

$
0
0

ComicBook.com has reported that Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner is rumored to be the antagonist in Shane Black's upcoming Iron Man 3.

According to their report, the Wilmington soundstages which will be used for filming include a large water tank, but that's not all.

So while the Mandarin and The Ghost are possibilities (as bad guys), we think there might be another possibility. As already mentioned, Marvel Studios is shooting in a coastal town in a facility that boasts a special effects water tank as one of its selling point. The location lends itself to a water-based villain, which got us thinking.  In Iron Man 2, there were several easter eggs involving Atlantis, which led to lots of speculation that Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner would be appearing in an upcoming Marvel Studios film. There have also been reports that a giant sea creature called Leviathan will make an appearance in The Avengers, which has led to speculation about Atlantis and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner in that movie as well.

Of course, Loki is the main villain featured in The Avengers, so if Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner does make an appearance it’s likely in a supporting role. Knowing how Marvel Studios likes to tie their films together, it would make sense that they might want to lay the groundwork in The Avengers for the villain in their next big film, which is Iron Man 3.

What do you think? And better yet, who would you like to see portray Namor?

You can't go wrong with any of these titles.  This time, check out reviews for Real Steel, Drive and Primeval: Volume 3.

Real Steel (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo)
WDHE / Released January 24, 2012

The Pitch
Balancing gritty action and emotional heart, Real Steel is an inspiring and visually stunning film that takes audiences on an action-packed journey. Washed-up boxer Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) scrapes by as a small-time robot-fight promoter as he tries to make a comeback. Against all odds he eventually succeeds—at least in the eyes of his son Max (Dakota Goyo). Real Steel is spectacular family entertainment that will have everyone cheering again and again.

The Review
Real Steel is one of those movies that, going into it, feels like a big, dumb film.  So much so, in fact, that people have said to me on a number of occasions, "Why aren't they just calling it Rock'em Sock'em Robots The Movie?"

I was more than pleasantly surprised that the boxing robots are window dressing on a story about a wayward father and the son that he's never gotten to know.  Now, before you laugh, I know you've seen this story a dozen times before, but it's execution in this film works in no small part due to the performances of Jackman and Goyo.

Director Shawn Levy approaches the film with a verisimilitude that is engaging and best of all honest and as a result, has created a truly excellent family film that's entertaining for all ages.  One of Levy's brilliant moves is consulting with producer Steven Spielberg and building practical versions of the thirt or so robots in the film.  These are all huge props that are brought to life by a number of talented puppeteers and is not only more realistic, but less obvious and garish then they likely would have been in CGI.  Picture and sound quality are vibrant and stunning as was the entire ensemble which including Evangeline Lilly, Anthony Mackie and Kevin Durand. Extras include featurettes, bloopers and deleted and extended scenes.

Reel Steel is entertaining, charming, emotionally charged and perfect for every member of the family.  Name the last movie that accomplished that?  Highly recommended.

Primeval: Volume 3 (Blu-ray)
BBC / Released January 10th, 2012

The Pitch
Monster hit Primeval roars back onto the screens for an extended third series. Still reeling from Stephen's death and with the depth of Helen's betrayal now revealed, Nick Cutter must fight to re-focus his embattled team. Cutter's crew are joined by some new recruits in the form of maverick policeman Danny Quinn, sparky Egyptologist Sarah Page, and the new leader of the ARC's security forces Captain Becker. But as the anomalies continue to present an unrelenting series of threats, the task in hand seems almost insurmountable. It's not just deadly creatures the team has to contend with, they also face a threat to the future of not just the ARC but of mankind itself. Prepare for more explosive action as Primeval bares its newly sharpened teeth.

The Review
Comprised of seasons 4 & 5, Primeval: Volume 3 is a guilty pleasure of jurassic proportions.

Mixing up characters from the previous seasons, Primeval delivers exactly what it's audience wants: dinosaurs.

Combining pop science with solid writing and solid special effects, the series delivers a regular episodic creature of the week story with an overall mythology.  And unlike Terra Nova, you see the dinosaurs in this one, as they frequently arrive in present day London thanks to time anomalies, which must be kept secret to the general public.  Extras include webisodes and featurettes.  Primeval is big, dumb entertainment full of conspiracies, scientific mysteries and dinosaurs.  In other words, fun.  Recommended.

Drive (Blu-ray)
Sony /  Released January 31, 2012

The Pitch
Ryan Gosling stars as a Hollywood stunt driver for movies by day and moonlights as a wheelman for criminals by night. Though a loner by nature, “Driver” can’t help falling in love with his beautiful neighbor Irene (Carey Mulligan), a young mother dragged into a dangerous underworld by the return of her ex-convict husband. After a heist goes wrong, Driver finds himself driving defense for the girl he loves, tailgated by a syndicate of deadly serious criminals (Albert Brooks and Ron Perlman). Soon he realizes the gangsters are after more than the bag of cash and is forced to shift gears and go on the offense.

The Review
In the words of Tracy Morgan, "I love Drive so much I want to take it behind a middle school and get it pregnant."

Reminiscent of the work of early Michael Mann, director Nicolas Winding Refn has composed an amazing film with both poetic moments of stillness and silence and also explosive violence.  Following the structure of Shane, Drive tackles some very common themes: love, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, revenge and madness and examines them in a fresh and invigorating execution.  THe entire cast delivers distinctive and memorable performances including Gosling, Mulligan, Brooks and Perlman, but also Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, Oscar Isaac and newcomer Kaden Leos.

Extras include some featurettes and an interview with Refn.  Drive is a stylish, cool, hypnotic and unforgettable.  Highest recommendation.

Zalman King's work was/is one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

I can remember watching his work as a teenager and wishing with all my heart that some oiled up carnival worker would kiss me against my will and then make me cry before licking the tears from my face (teen girls are a weird bunch).

I mourn his passing greatly and to honor his work I am re-printing my very first column for FoG back in 2009 that dealt with his body of work and how it influenced most of my relationships (just hit the link below).

R.I.P Zalman, you will be missed.

The new stuff that didn't go up before the game consists of Battleship, The Lorax and John Carter. G.I Joe 2, Hunger Games, and Avengers have all bee posted before. In addition to these movies, we also have some indie movies that didn't have the budget to spend $2 million on an ad. Casting News : TV Version

There is a lot of news to get through from the weekend. Here's just what's been cast recently in the world of television.

As you may know, it's pilot season. That means that a bunch of new shows are now in development and stars are jumping on projects that may or may not pan out. So let's take a look at what actors will be seen in soon. Names today range from Alice Cooper to Terry O'Quinn to Sarah Chalke. Take a look at all the news right after the break.

Syfy has put together the cast for their next original film called Bigfoot. The project already has actors like Danny Bonaduce and Barry Williams attached. Today we get the news of additions Howard Hesseman, Sherilyn Fenn, Andre Royo and most notably Alice Cooper. The story is about two rivals on the hunt to capture Bigfoot after he is discovered in South Dakota. One wants to use the creature to exploit it and the other wants to save it. [EW]

In two of ABC's new shows, Andre Braugher and Sarah Chalke have been added as leads for the casts. Braugher will be coming to the drama The Last Resort about a submarine crew that decides to declare itself a sovereign nation. Chalke will be going to How To Live With Your Parents For The Rest Of Your Life. She is set to play a divorced single mom who moves back with her "eccentric parents. [Variety]

JoAnna Garcia Swisher will be coming to an untitled project at CBS from Greg Malins and Greg Berlanti. The multi-camera comedy is centered around a character Nick who has "has a health scare and realizes that Wendy is 'the one'. Now he has to figure out how to tell that to his best friend and business partner of 15 years." [Deadline]

Nick Stoller, writer of The Muppets has a project over at CBS that has just cast Michael Angarano. Angarano will be playing the lead in the comedy based around Stoller's real-life experiences as a twenty-year-old. The single-camera ensemble comedy has the lead character having to work next to his ex-girlfriend just one cubicle away. [Deadline]

Josh Gad, star of Book of Mormon is coming to star in his own show 1600 Penn. Gad will join the cast in the White House family comedy that he's been working on with Modern Family director Jason Winer and Jon Lovett, a former speechwriter for President Obama. [Deadline]

Over at HBO, Bobby Cannavale is joining Boardwalk Empire as a "charming but ruthless gangster who challenges Nucky." The news comes soon after the announcement that the show has been picked up for a third season. [THR]

Terry O'Quinn is coming to Falling Skies. The actor best known for his pivotal role as John Locke on Lost will be guest starring in the last two episodes of the drama's second season as a former history professor and mentor to Tom Mason. [EW]

HARRISON FORD Could Be Coming Back To BLADE RUNNER

The androids are still dreaming of electric sheep, and Harrison Ford be coming back in a new Blade Runner movie.

According to Twitch, Ford is in early talks right now to have some role in what looks to be a direct sequel to the original film and not a reboot. Of course, because it is so early, it's always possible that the deal doesn't go through or he passes on an offered role.

In March 2011, Ridley Scott was said to be working on an update to the classic sci-fi with Alcon Entertainment and Warner Brothers. Scott is signed on to direct the project which will most likely be his next project after Prometheus wraps.

At that point in time it was thought that the new movie would be a reboot and have no actors or ties to the original. Producer Andrew Kosove even said in an interview with the LA Times that this movie will have nothing to do with Harrison Ford. "This is a total reinvention and in my mind that means doing everything fresh, including casting."

If the rumors are correct it sounds like there may be some rewrites or changes in plans over at the development offices. Would you like to see Ford return to his role or see something new?

Crackle Buys First Scripted Show, Hulu Responds by Buying A Mocumentary Show

Web streamers are trying to compete with the broadcasters now. The Sony owned Crackle has put in an order for paranormal series. Hulu already has a few shows and added another comedy which is being called a mocumentary.

According to Variety, Crackle has given the order for six episodes of The Unknown. The show is a half-hour anthology series that will use the same format as shows like The Twilight Zone or Creepshow. THR reports Hulu has gone in a less serious direction and picked up Paul the Male Matchmaker.

The Unknown is being executive produced by Chris Collins from Sons of Anarchy and Steve Tzirlin, a former LucasFilm development executive. Production is scheduled for release in March with a release following sometime soon in the year. No actors are currently attached to the project.

Crackle launched in 2007 and consists of many movies and TV series from the Sony collection. The project is meant to bring more attention to the digital entertainment service. Netflix has been popular and has been picking up multiple scripted series like Lilyhammer and House of Cards.

After picking up those dramas, Hulu is now getting a mocumentary series from Sex and the City's Liz Tuccillo and Mad Men's Paul Bartholomew. The show is centered around a very bad matchmaker who doesn't really care about women but feels the need to help them find a soul mate.

10 episodes will come from Warner Bros Televsion Group's Studio 2.0. The show will have a slew of guests including Janeane Garofalo, House's Lisa Edelstein, Arrested Development's Tony Hale, True Blood's Sam Trammell and Jonathan Silverman. The show premieres soon on February 13th.

A new project is being started up at FX from singer-songwriter Dave Grohl and comedian Dana Gould.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Foo Fighters' lead and Gould will be writing and executive producing a half-hour comedy about a rock band "on the verge of stardom and breaking up."

The project would revolve around the band who look for help from a couples' therapist who is near divorce himself. The band clearly needs help and doesn't know what to do. The half-hour comedy would be counter show to Scar Tissue.

Scar Tissue, the drama project from Anthony Kiedis, frontman of Red Hot Chili Pepppers, has been in development at FX and before that was at HBO. The project is being executive produced by Entourage EP's Mike Benson and Marc Abrams along with Kiedis and a few others.

The project from Grohl and Gould would see them both executive producing alon with Tom Lassally from 3 Arts and Dave Becky and Bill Gerber from Gerber Pictures.

Fox Orders Comedies From RESCUE ME Writer, WILFRED Duo, And MODERN FAMILY Showrunner

Fox picked up some big projects today from the comedy geniuses behind shows like Wilfred, Modern Family, and Rescue Me.

THR reports that the new shows today come from writer Peter Tolan, the duo of Eli Jorne and Reed Agnew, and Modern Family showrunner Steve Levitan. The three comedies join 7 others at the broadcaster for the pilot season.

First up, Tolan's project Let it Go. The ensemble comedy is about a married couple, their best friend, and a sister. They constantly attempt to survive in the difficult changing work and try to "navigate, negotiate, and sometimes manipulate society's unspoken rules.

From the Wilfred guys comes Must Hire, a show that revolves around an "uptight, young executive." He hired his father at an entry level position and while he expected only the best, he gets to see that his dad is really the clown of the office. Eli Jorne and Reed Agnew will be serving as both writers and executive producers on the show.

Rebounding is the latest project for Levitan who will be working with the consulting producers from Last Man Standing Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. The pair have credits on many big title shows like New Girl, The Office, Just Shoot Me, and Perfect Couples.

The show is about a man who uses the help of his pickup basketball team to cope with the death of his fiancé. The show is apparently based on real events from Port's life.

Levitan, Port and Wiseman will all be executive producing. Modern Family directer Jason Winer will be taking on the pilot with a script from Port and Wiseman. Levitan was going to direct the first episode, but is now just producing.

Watching this analysis of the death of Superman (followed by his soap opera-like return to life) is like witnessing Neil deGrasse Tyson making out with Michio Kaku while Carl Sagan is cupping their balls.

That's how frakking amazing this is.

Written, directed and starring Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis The Death and Return of Superman features appearances from Mandy Moore, Elijah Wood, Ron Howard, Chris Hardwick, and Simon Pegg.

Here's hoping Landis and team tackle the equally mediocre Batman: Knightfall next.

WHAT? NO CROTCH SHOT? David Beckham's A$$ Sells Underwear...His Scrotum However IS Just A Bit Jealous Of Its Lack of Air Time

I didn't watch the Superbowl because I got rid of cable and instead spent my Sunday watching Netflix and Hulu Plus until I got a migraine.

So naturally, my inbox was filled with videos for the commercials this morning from friends and fellow readers of FOG! and while I enjoyed about 20% of them, this particular ad stood out for two reasons 1) I have never seen narcissism presented this clearly before and 2) You could almost feel David Beckham's balls furiously jealous for not being shown on camera.

Yes, I apparently have a telekinetic relationship with Mr. Posh Spice's balls and I'm a bit overwhelmed by it.

Maybe that's why I am constantly asking people if they smell cheese as I do.

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Fatale #2
Writer: Ed Brubaker
Art: Sean Phillips
Colors: Dave Stewart
Publisher: Image Comics
Price: $3.50

The mystery surrounding Josephine gets a deeper as she is looking for a particular item inside the home of Walter Booker.

Booker spent this issue beating down a cult member who told him that someone will see him later on when he’s alone. Hank Raines, godson of Nicolas Lash, meets up with Josephine and formulate a plan to bring down Booker.

Fate intervenes as the mystery man the cult member mentioned meets Booker and makes him an offer that is beyond wrong.

I read Criminal to get more familiar with Brubaker’s independent titles and I have a much better appreciation for his work. He's a natural storyteller who’s clever plot devices are a thing of beauty. Sean Phillips' art is perfect for this stunning, tense, on the edge of your seat thriller that is the definition of cool. Brubaker has struck gold twice this week with Winter Soldier and Fatale!

Red Lanterns #6
Writer: Peter Milligan
Art: Ed Benes, Diego Bernard & Rebecca Buchmann
Colors: Nathan Eyring
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

British professor Jack Moore has dealt with a lifetime of torment and ridicule.

He buried his anger thinking he could keep his feelings in line. Things change for Mr. Moore as the instrument of rage selects him and begins an extremely painful transformation of the mind, body and perhaps, soul. Moore tries his best to fight it as a tidal wave of awful memories flood his mind.

Reminders of the past begin to chip away at his consciousness until Jack realizes he can no longer control himself as he’s encountered the one thing that can make him the monster he hid from everyone: A Red Lantern ring.

Meanwhile, Atrocitus and Bleez fight each other for leadership of the Red Lanterns as many of the Lanterns watch on, rooting for one over the other.

The crux of the story is Moore’s emotional struggle as the power ring plays the role of the devil on the shoulder telling him to embrace the hate.

There was nothing special or bad about the artwork as it did a great job orchestrating Milligan’s script. It is detrimental to our mental health to keep things bottled inside because eventually, you will snap.

The red ring was drawn to Moore like a moth to a flame and the end result produces the first human Red Lantern.

Detective Comics #6
Writer: Tony S. Daniel
Art: Tony S. Daniel
Colors: Tomeu Morey
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

Crime is running amuck in Gotham (when is it not?) and the Penguin’s brand new Iceberg Casino is the talk of the town.

What looks like the land of lost riches is really a palace of ill gotten gains.

Batman's investigation brings Bruce Wayne to the casino but things take a turn for the worse as his love interest, Charlotte, has been taken prisoner.

It’s a good stand alone book but the dialog has trouble finding his voice. There were a few record scratch moments with the narrative as Batman sounded more like a spy on a secret mission than primo badass and detective.

I have no complaints about the art as it maintained it’s charisma. The story is not as captivating as the last five issues, but it worth a gander because it some key components to the current story arc.

Grade: C+

Venom #13
Writer: Rick Remender
Art: Tony Moore
Colors: Val Staples
Publisher: Marvel
Price: $3.99

Venom, Ghost Rider, Red Hulk and X-23 coincidentally come together in Las Vegas in order to prevent Hell on Earth in part one of the “Circle of Four” story arc.

This is a brilliant combination of superheroes that have their own baggage but also do the right thing when the time comes. Flash Thompson’s father died and it hit him harder than he thought. The panels of him finding solace in the bottle reminds me a little bit of the classic  “Demon in a Bottle” story arc in Iron Man.

There is a lot going on as far as the artwork is concerned. Most times, less is more, but not in this case. The chaos that one could expect to ensue with creatures from Hell coming topside was depicted effectively.

The last two pages display the four good guys and its pretty bad ass and makes you want to see the coming battle. A one dollar price increase for a bigger story was well worth the trade.

Oh, did I forget to mention the laundry list of characters that appear who all add to the story?

This is the first issue of a two part storyline that is an great jumping on point. The thing I love about the magic of Stan Sakai’s storytelling is it simple yet rich with style, culture and information.

It’s a shame that most comic book shops only order 3 or 4 copies and some don’t put it on their shelves at all.

Apple’s Magic Touch

Apple has been pushing “touch” as it’s preferred user interaction method with it’s products ever since the initial success of the iPhone.

The iPod Touch and the iPad followed the iPhone’s success, and the Macbook’s multi-touch trackpads lead the industry with their responsiveness and superb quality.

And it takes two to tango - software, and hardware. Apple, once again is in the unique position of having mastery and control over both.

The most recent version of OS X is jam-packed with trackpad-friendly features that utilize a dizzying array of powerful multi-touch gestures.

All of this evolution and refinement has led to the inevitable - the Magic Trackpad - an oversized multi-touch trackpad for use with a desktop Mac that Apple is promoting as an eventual mouse replacement.

It’s hard to imagine the ubiquitous mouse (which Apple ironically popularized 30 years ago) disappearing from our technology lives. But it could happen.

Recently, someone I know who is an iMac user, replaced their mouse with Apple’s Magic Trackpad. It’s the first time I’ve ever known someone to make the switch. I can understand if someone has only ever used a laptop, and a trackpad is all they’ve known. But this is someone who always used a mouse, happened to get a Macbook Air, fell in love quickly with the Air’s excellent multi-touch trackpad, and decided to get rid of the mouse they’ve been using with their iMac.

Is Apple actually onto something here?

I too have been impressed, and at times astounded by how much I actually enjoy using the multi-touch trackpad on my Macbook Air. I have a bluetooth mouse, but have been catching myself not even using it even though I have it out. Now, I only use it if I really need ultra-fine control for some reason.

But those who are looking for extra precision with a mouse are not Apple’s target audience.

Mainstream consumers of Apple’s products are iPhone and iPad owners, and they are beginning to ditch their Windows computers for Macbooks and iMacs. Many are even ditching their desktops (whether Windows or Mac) for Macbooks - particularly the Macbook Air.

Touch is at the heart of the Apple experience.

It makes sense for Apple to push the mouse to the sidelines.

Their multi-touch trackpad is easy and powerful because of the variety of gestures that can be configured.

It’s also worth noting Apple’s move away from ‘click’ to ‘tap’ - a slight, but notable change that aligns their trackpads with their iOS devices.

In a recent Apple keynote, I noticed that one of Apple’s presenters, when showing off features of OS X, repeatedly used the word ‘tap’ instead of ‘click’ - a sure sign of the an impending transition.

I have the trackpad on my Air configured to respond to taps instead of full physical clicks. I predict that Apple will do away with the trackpad clicking mechanism all together, and soon.

It’s also why I believe the next Apple TV will not ship with a remote that has clickable buttons.

During this year’s Superbowl, Samsung ran an ad which features a phone that uses a stylus. In the ad, Apple enthusiasts were portrayed as hopeless lemmings, waiting in line at an Apple Store for a product release. In the ad, these supposed Apple fanboys were mesmerized by Samsung’s stylus and decided to ditch Apple, via song and dance. It’s is possibly the most absurd technology ad I have ever seen. A stylus? Really?

A stylus might have niche appeal, and is certainly useful for particular tasks. And we are very far away from the ubiquitous mouse going extinct.

But the future is touch. Apple knows it. The road they are paving leads to a multi-touch future across all of their products. And where Apple leads, the industry follows.

Resistance is futile.
