FROM DUSK 'TIL DAWN-THE SERIES (Review)

Review by Elizabeth Weitz

Tonight is the launch of the El Ray channel's From Dusk 'Til Dawn-The Series and for some people this announcement is akin to finding out that they won the lottery. After-all, it is going to be a violent ride filled with dialog-heavy characters, copious amounts of blood, half-dressed women and tons and tons of vampires (rather than zombies...how refreshing).

For my complete review, check it out after the break (it contains spoilers so if you want to watch the show as a newborn baby, completely free of any knowledge, then skip this post).

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE BACON...From Your Phone

You'd think that the bacon craze would have died down by now but no, like the seemingly endless rein of Zombies, bacon isn't going anywhere until you succumb from exhaustion.

And Oscar Meyer would like to help you into the delicious submission of back fat by providing you with an free App (and a chance to win a gadget that will admit the scent of cooked bacon into your bedroom).

Wouldn't that be nice?

Of course, the App itself, only sounds like bacon frying so I suggest you apply to win (and beta test) the actual attachment that will fit your iPhone in order to immerse yourself into the bacon-ocity of life .

Now that would definitely start your day off right.

THE PRICE OF PUKE Talks About the Importance of Role Models (That Would Be John Waters For the Uninitiated)

0

In this gloriously animated version of a talk John Waters did at the NY Public Library on June 7, 2010, Waters explains the importance of having role models in your life (as well as in his own).

With his notorious wit, the King of Bad Taste goes in depth into his own role models that helped him become who he is, as well as why everyone should look to others for inspiration...even those people who are sort of horrible.

Watch the video after the break and then make a list of your own inspirational people, mine include Lance Kerwin and Clint Howard and I'm not embarrassed to say so.

Greatest Cinematic Inventions

It’s nearly 2015, the year Back to the Future II predicts we’ll all be wearing sneakers with self-tying laces and iridescent clothing with auto-drying capability. It’s also the year we’re supposed to have anti-gravity Hoverboards, a futuristic transportation device that’s been a frequent and well-revered element of my dreams ever since childhood.

A recent viral video that purportedly documents a real-life hoverboard breakthrough has proven to be a delicious hoax, but it got me thinking about some of my other favorite cinematic inventions.

'The Monster Squad' is Good Enough For Me

Welcome to the latest installment of Flashback to the Present. I’ll be your contributing writer, Charles Knauf.

There are two things in this world that I can appreciate: a good 80s movie and drinking.

A week ago my good friend, Eleanor, and I were discussing this over our fifth or twelfth beer when she stated an undeniable truth. There are two people in this world: Goonies or Monster Squad kids.

Think about this for a moment and let it settle – try as you might, you can’t fight the fact that you either love Goonies or The Monster Squad.

Sure, you could be like me and enjoy both; but, deep down, I’m going to give an opinion that you all may hate me for.

Monster Squad takes Goonies any day of the week.

SKRILLEX AND BOYS NOIZE Unite For Some Serious WTF In Dog Blood- Chella Ride

0
0

It's Wednesday so that automatically means you are dead inside and need a little something to keep you going until quitting time on Friday. And boy do I have you covered.

Now, I do have to say that before I lead you to the following video of an animated astronaut dog who loses his shit (oops, did I just ruin the surprise?) I am not a fan of Skrillex or his music at all, in fact I try to avoid most of his stuff out of fear that it will cause my brain to implode, but this collaboration between Mr. Stringy Hair and Boys Noize is more 90s electro nostalgia than OHMYGODTURNITOFFNOW! so yeah, it's worthy of being listened to on a Wednesday.

But let's ignore the music for a moment and prepare ourselves for some truly Hump Day Happiness with animation that combines "...3d, 2d, cel animation and live action footage"[Vimeo] that not only is as frantic as the music, it completely rocks in a way that Skrillex could only dream about (are you picking up what I'm putting down about that guy?).

So travel past the realms of the universe (as well as the break) and enjoy space dogs as you never have before.

Woof!

THERE ARE POLE DANCING ROBOTS NOW...Did You Hear Me? Pole Dancing Robots...FML

0
0

For those five of you who regularly read my posts, you are well aware of my paralysing fear of robots and their bid to take over the world by draining us of our fluids in order to convert them into some kind of Robot Energy Source. But now comes word that some German company has developed Stripper 'Bots that will endlessly pole dance for you BY BUMPING AND GRINDING their mechanical parts to whatever Ke$ha song you desire, which can only lead to one outcome, humanity will be killed by a robot cooch being power-thrusted into our skulls until we are dead and left without a face.

I have come up with this conclusion after many hours of watching the following upsetting video that not only contains the most off-putting visuals one could ever see, it also makes it quite clear that Robots are well aware that the easiest way to subdue us is to shake their money-maker...then smash us to bits with their nether region while Pour Some Sugar On Me plays over the PA.

Take a look at the video after the break and prepare yourselves, it's not pretty.

THE STAR WARS #6 (review)

Review by Tony Pacitti
Writer: J. W. Rinzler
Artist: Mike Mayhew
Colorist:  Rain Beredo
Cover Artist: Nick Runge
Published by Dark Horse Comics
On Sale March 12, 2013

Somewhere out there is a person who not only has never seen any of the Star Wars films, but also possess no working knowledge of the plot, characters, and culture surrounding it.

I want to meet this person and sit them down with The Star Wars issues 1-6 and see what they take away from it.

I’m not taking much away from it at this point, and part of that is because I’m “reading it wrong”, by which I mean I’m holding it up to the films for constant comparison.

The cross-referencing is impossible to avoid.

I can’t even walk through my apartment without some visual cue making me think of Star Wars, whether it be the vintage Kenner AT-AT that serves as a sentry on top of our linen cabinet or the portrait of Chewbacca with the bedroom eyes that a friend painted and gave me as a gift hanging in our bedroom (let it be known that for this, among other things, my wife is a saint).

Here’s a matchup that can only come from the mind of Steve Niles (30 Days of Night). Monster & Madman is a limited series focusing on Frankenstein’s monster and Jack the Ripper!

Issue #1 largely is set upon an olde wooden ship. Frank has been through a lot since master passed and his wife left him (or was dropped in a vat of acid—whichever your prefer!).

The monster is seeking to escape, as he realizes he is difficult to kill. Joining the Norwegian sailing vessel is his best bet.

While aboard he is tricked by the captain, a master he is forces to obey.

A good, meaty story here in the first issue of the mini-series, focusing on Frankenstein character development in this particular world.

So much happens in a short number of pages, it is staggering the way Niles can craft a story. The monster is familiar in name, but this Frankenstein has a personality all of his own.

Spooky art by Damian Worm gives a Dave McKean Arkham Asylum painted/collage look. Great lettering too, assuming by Worm as well (no letters credit listed).

Fans of Universal Horror, Steve Niles and his Frankenstein work with legend Bernie Wrightson should pick this up!

Hollywood’s Self-Loathing

0

Last week’s Oscars show played out as it normally does: speeches and montages of the Hollywood film industry insisting on its self-importance — its output are on the forefront of social change, that they’re making the world a better place, that people in Ukraine find so much inspiration in them that they’re taking time out of being invaded to watch the broadcast.

But like I said, we get the same message every year, so I’m not surprised.

What is intriguing, though, is not once during the epically long show — and including every past show I’ve watched — does anyone from Hollywood take pride in the fact that movies are an art form.

There’s no declaration that “we make great art.”

THE BALLAD OF A WI-FI HERO: H. Jon Benjamin Gives Vocal Life To One Man's Attempt To Fix A Wi-Fi Problem For His Girlfriend's Grandparents

0

For anyone who works in IT or knows how to fix computers, your life is one long vocational nightmare and I completely understand your pain. For every work-related computer issue that you are forced to deal with during the hours of 9-5, there are two more assholes waiting for you at home in the guise of friends or family members who "Just want you to take a look at something".

And in this animated homage to anyone who is called upon to fix "The Google", may you find comfort in the fact that your techno-knowledge is not so much a talent as it is the basis for an epic quest to solve riddles and computer mysteries.

Voiced by H. Jon Benjamin (of Archer and Bob's Burgers fame, among many others) and scripted from Mike Lacher's amazingly funny McSweeney's Internet Tendency piece from 2012, The Ballad of A Wi-Fi Hero will certainly bring to light the heroic nature of all who attempt to fix computer-related things that could easily be resolved by the rest of us if we weren't such dumb fucks.

KEVIN BACON Explains the 80s To Millennials

0
0

My nephews were born in the late 90s and early 2000s so their point of reference on the 80s comes only from pictures of their dad and me in parachute pants and neon-colored shirts. They, of course, think what we wore and the music we listened to were stupid and trite compared to the awesomeness of their style,  but I have news for them, in 20+ years, they will be horrifically embarrassed to see photographic evidence that they once wore Ed Hardy clothing without any shame at all, so there.

But there was more to the 80s than simply bad clothing choices and Debbie Gibson songs, there was Kevin Bacon, and he wants all of you little millennial shits to know what it was like to live in a world where technology stopped at push-button phones and VHS machines.

So watch it punks, and get a lesson on growing up during the Cold War where people my age thought we would be nuked or get AIDS just because we were alive.
