Dark Horse continues to expand its Originals line, offering some of the most unique comic book storytelling experiences on the market today. Next up, Gustavo Duarte spins wordless tales brimming with humor, charm, and delightfully twisted horror in his American graphic novel debut Monsters! & Other Stories.

Oversized beasts, in the short story “Monsters!,” wreak havoc on civilians and cities in the tradition of Godzilla and King Kong. In “Có!,” an alien abduction disarms a gentle farmer, and in “Birds,” two business partners run from fate, only to find themselves hopelessly unable to change the future.

Beautiful illustration and evocative storytelling fill every page of this unforgettable collection that brings together Duarte’s works, which were previously only available in his native country of Brazil.

“It is a joy and an honor to have my first book published in the USA by Dark Horse,” said Gustavo Duarte. “It’s really cool to have Monsters! published by the company that has produced the work of so many guys I admire, like Mike Mignola and Eric Powell, among others. I hope this is the first of many.”

Duarte’s Monsters! & Other Storiesarrives in finer comic shops everywhere on January 15, 2014, and will carry a cover price of only $12.99 for 152 beautifully illustrated pages!
After the jump, check out the fantastic cover.

'AAAHH!!! Real Monsters' :The Complete Series Comes to DVD

GEEK NOSTALGIA: 'The Kid's Guide to the Internet' Is Educational VHS Tape Learning At Its Best...You know, Before We Realized How Much Sweet-Ass Porn There Was To Be Found Online

0
0

Back when the Internet was a wee little thing and was thought of simply as an online encyclopedia tool for nerds and not regular folks, there came a gift sent from above in the form of an AOL CD in which 100 free use hours were bestowed upon you and your computer to "surf the net" or "chat about hobbies".

100 hours of non-charged time...how in the world could one person use up 100 hours?

That was my very thought as I inserted the disc and found that no matter where I went, I could always find porn (and verily Elizabeth did find happiness in the most degrading horrific pornography she could find, which she would boot up at parties to terrify her guests when it was time for them to go home).

But while I was in my late teens/early twenties when the beginnings of the Internet began to flare up and had no problem adapting to it thanks to the many hours spent on my Mac Classic, kids themselves were still too young to know just what was laying in wait for them once they shot themselves into the series of tubes that constructed the information superhighway.

So they turned to the two people they thought would guide them, Mom and Dad...which is ironic because if there are two people who would have known less about technology it would be the people who grew up listening to radio plays and were unable to grasp the concept of call-waiting on the touch-tone house phone.

And because Mom and Dad were idiots about the Internet, they themselves turned to VHS tapes that were chock full of learnin' so that they could go back to doing whatever it was that parents did before realizing they could cheat on their spouse virtually online.

So here it is my friends, the very VHS tape that parents and teachers set kids in front of to learn ALL ABOUT THE INTERNET before they realized what, exactly, one could really find on the Internet.

Good times.

There’s only a few things that will make me throw money/debit cards/transit cards at the comic store clerk with reckless abandon, without doing ritualistic Wednesday dance of “I dunno, kinda pricey, put this back, pick this up, put it back, pick this one up”, that other customers really seem to enjoy.

One of these greenback pitching motivators is putting the Black Panther on the cover. I almost bought two of this issue because my favorite 80s X-Artist Alan Davis made the thing.

On to the story, you can start here to read this current adjective-less Wolverine title, it is a part of a 6 issue arc wherein, check this out, Wolverine has lost his healing factor! OK, OK, we know that’s part of The Wolverine plot and maybe that is a tie-in but it doesn't matter.

Things heat up between Storm, Logan and T’Challa in Wakanda, and Maria Hill (what is she, The Watcher now? Seriously!) is keeping tabs on the master plan to cure Wolverine from the mind controlling micro-virus.

Paul Cornell, another awesome Brit is writing this series to Davis’ strengths, all the while   somehow fitting in to current Marvel NOW! continuity and making this read like a Chris Claremont Excalibur title. The brilliance in this book is astounding, and even though Wolverine is a top-seller, current fans may be skipping this book.

Those fans are fools, this could be the best X-Book out there today! At least for the NES and Atari crowd!

Bring Me The Bonkers, Geek Movies

Man, it's tough being Pacific Rim.

The giant monsters-versus-giant robots adventure yarn has everything you could ask for in a movie about giant monsters versus giant robots. I expected things to be smashed.

Repeatedly. With bare scratches of story to hold it together.

This is thrill ride time, people. And I got it!

Fake SEINFELD Movies Finally Get Some Posters

I absolutely adore Seinfeld and while my heart will always belong to the four main cast members, there is a fifth member that could easily surpass Jerry, Elaine, Kramer and George if given the chance to finally shine...the faux movies mentioned throughout the series.

Yes, fans of the show have always longed for the day when Rochelle, Rochelle or Ponce de Leon would show up at our local cineplex but alas it never happened.

But at least we can finally admire what might have been if they did via some spectacular movie posters created by the folks at NextMovie.com.

I don't know about you, but I will be forever haunted by the fact that I will never actually get to see Chunnel starring Daniel Craig, Aaron Eckhart and Julianne Hough (which I believe would be a lovely companion piece to Fair Game with Cindy Crawford and William Baldwin):

The APOCALYPSE Has Begun: RIGHT SAID FRED Reunites For The Song "I'm Too Smurfy" And Locusts Fill the Skies

August 15, 2013

Dear Diary,

I did not know that today would be the day that the world would bleed and demons would crawl out from the crevices of the earth to feast upon the flesh and bones of humankind. I just thought that the weather was bad.

But maybe we had this coming. I mean we celebrate reality TV stars like Honey Boo Boo and The Duck Dynasty family, we have allowed education to be downgraded to the point where kids are graduating high school without knowing how to participate in critical or abstract thinking (but they can color in the correct A, B, C or D answer on a test, yay!) and then Right Said Fred reunited in order to turn their I'm Too Sexy song into I'm Too Smurfy and well diary, you know the rest.

So now I'm hiding in my basement waiting until the inevitable happens and I am devoured by Cthulhu or whomever.

Fucking Right Said Fred.... (crap, gotta go, I think I just heard groaning coming from above...)

THE BRIDGE: "ID" S1E6 (review)

By Matt 'Quori' Armstrong
When an episode starts with the obvious sounds of adults getting their groove on, I instantly think I am watching an episode of True Blood.

Not the case, it’s definitely The Bridge.

Though now that I think of it, the parallels are uncanny: Murder? Check. Blood? Check. Random sexual hook ups? Check. Prostitution? Check. Lead blonde female character who does really stupid things? CHECK! There are even beheadings in both shows!!!

If I see anything closely resembling fangs in The Bridge and I’m done.

I digress…

Win 'EPIC' on Blu-ray! Plus, The World of Fox Home Entertainment Animation

0
0
Over the years, Twentieth Century Fox has teamed up with Blue Sky Studios and Dreamworks Animation to bring to life worlds that we could only previously imagine in our dreams. The world of animation given to us by Fox Home Entertainment has brought us into many different environments, including a tropical paradise, a continental meltdown, and a forest full of magical adventures. Take a peak into the world of animation with this photo gallery.

From the creators of Ice Age, the year’s funniest, most exhilarating animated adventure comes home as EPIC debuts on Blu-ray Combo Pack, Deluxe Edition Blu-ray, and DVD this August 20 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Directed by Chris Wedge (The Ice Age Franchise) and featuring an amazing voice cast including Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Steven Tyler, Pitbull, and Beyoncé, the blockbuster film comes home just in time to help families become one with nature and end the summer in Epic style.

Ice Age: Continental Drift

The portrayal of the ocean and sky in the newest Ice Age film is so realistic that it becomes hard to remember that we’re not drifting around on an iceberg! Instead, we’re relaxing at home, taking in the scenery.

Each Ice Age adventure with Sid, Manny, and Diego introduces us to a fun landscape. Blue Sky Studios’ attention to detail allows us to feel as if we are actually along for the journey with our furry friends.

The Croods

Dreamworks Animation gave us a wonderful vision of what life was like for The Croods with computer-animated wild animals and unusual plants.

When the Crood family was forced to leave behind their cave and explore the world outside, we were taken through some fantastic landscapes. The night sky was especially breathtaking!

Rio

In 2011, Blue Sky Studios brought us to the beautiful country of Brazil with Rio. Both day and nighttime views of the scenery took our breath away!

From the jungles to the beaches to the bustling city, Rio showed us the many different landscapes of Rio de Janeiro. The vibrant colors of Carnival and the festival made for an exciting film.

Epic

In Epic, the animators from Blue Sky Studios paid close attention to details such as the feathers on the hummingbirds, really making Moonhaven and the forest come to life.

The epically beautiful landscape presented in the film allows the viewer to see nature from a different perspective. Everything in Epic has a larger-than-life magical feel.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs was the first 3D film for Blue Sky Studios. The enormous dinosaurs in the film gave us a glimpse into another era.

In the third Ice Age film, we were introduced to an entirely new world with a snow-free landscape. The change of scenery did not leave fans disappointed!
And now with their latest film Epic, arriving on Blu-ray & DVD August 20, we're giving away two copies to Forces of Geek readers!

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Tom McNulty, Shawn Levy,
Michelle Krumm, Andrew Lauren
Directed by James Ponsoldt
Screenplay by Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber
Based on The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp
Starring Miles Teller, Shailene Woodley, Brie Larson,
Jennifer Jason Leigh, Mary Elizabeth Winstead,
Kyle Chandler, Bob Odenkirk

A 24 / Rated R

Rarely does a movie capture the nuances of relationships and maturation as poignantly as director, James Ponsoldt’s, The Spectacular Now.

Adapted from Tim Tharp’s novel by the (500) Days of Summer writing team of Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, The Spectacular Now tells the story of easy going charmer, Sutter Keely (Miles Taylor).

Sutter is not particularly good looking, not the captain of the football team, not the class president; but his devastating charm makes him one of the most popular kids in school.

Sutter seems to have it all including a sexy girlfriend, Cassidy (Brie Larson). They are the IT couple who screw, smoke, drink and party their way through high school.

They live in the now.

Directed by Robert Luketic

Gaumont / Rated PG-13

Just when I thought movies this year could not get any worse, August arrives with the abysmal Paranoia.

Liam Helmsworth (the Chad Lowe to Chris Helmsworth's Rob Lowe) has an unmemorable turn as Adam Cassidy, a "Bridge and Tunnel" Brooklynite (huh?) trying to get to the top of corporate Manhattan by any means necessary.

After he and his tight knit troop of developers blow a presentation to their boss Nicholas Wyatt (a criminally underused Gary Oldman), the gang gets fired. Under Adam's wing, they blow the remainder of their budget on a night in Manhattan's trendiest new club.

Now that the money has been embezzled, Wyatt owns Cassidy.

KICK-ASS 2 (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Adam Bohling, Tarquin Pack,
Brad Pitt, David Reid, Matthew Vaughn
Screenplay by Jeff Wadlow
Based on Kick-Ass 2 and Hit-Girl
by Mark Millar, John Romita, Jr.
Directed by Jeff Wadlow
Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse,
Chloë Grace Moretz, Jim Carrey, Donald Faison,
John Leguizamo, Clark Duke, Morris Chestnut

Universal Pictures / Rated R

Kick-Ass 2 is the second installment (everything turns into a trilogy these days, sigh) in the Kick-Ass series.

We left off in the first, assured that Mindy/Hit Girl and Dave/Kick-Ass were going to become the ultimate team in stopping bad people from doing bad things.

Where her background came from revenge and darkness and his from a good moral compass, we were presented with an interesting duo that had a good purpose and true partnership.

I thought I was going to get an awesome display of teamwork, hot choreographed fight scenes, and some growth from these characters in the second film…

Womp womp…

Kick-Ass 2 is a gratuitously violent gag show.

Watch the Fan-Made Film SKYRIM: INTO THE VOID If, You Know, You Can Stop Playing THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM

This live-action Skrim short by professional YouTuber Warialasky follows Dovahkiin, the noble dragonborn hero, who is cursed in a fight with a vampire.

The synopsis: Dovahkiin has completed the task of eliminating Alduin and saving the world from destruction, only to have contracted vampirism along his journey. Most of Skyrim remains oblivious to this feat and shun him from their towns because he has become a vampire, leaving Dovahkiin to wander the wilds.

The head of the Dark Brotherhood, Astrid, captures Dovahkiin and brings him to a remote cabin in the marshes, believing she can use him. Promising a cure for his vampirism, Astrid convinces Dovahkiin to assist the Brotherhood on a mission to rescue a captured member of the Brotherhood. This forced partnership brings them face-to-face with the Necromancers and a battle for their survival ensues.

Sounds fairly interesting right?

I know I'm going to watch this while on company time.

MY TOP 5: BEST PUNK MOVIES

0
0
There was a lot going on on this date in history.

First off, just to tie today to my last article, August 16th is TE Lawrence's birthday!  It's also the day that Sports Illustrated published their first issue, the day that Elvis and Bela Lugosi died and, most importantly to me, it's my dad's birthday.

But I'm here to write about none of those things. Today also happens to be the 39th anniversary of four young men with the same last name took the stage for the fist time at a little club just at the end of Bleeker where it dead ends into Bowery.

The club was CBGB and the band, of course, was The Ramones.

Both of these things are (basically) gone now, but their influence lives on and on, and not only in music. The punk movement went on to influence movies, too. Here are five of the best punk movies.

For a much more comprehensive (and, honestly, better informed) list of punk films, check out Zack Carlson's book Destroy All Movies. Sadly, it's out of print, but I'm sure that copies can be found.

KICKSTARTER UPDATE: 'Art Story' by Disney Vets Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams Is Almost A Go and With Your Help It Can Be!

0
0

Last month I wrote about a really great Kickstarter campaign started by two former Disney Vets, Aaron Blaise and Chuck Williams, who are trying to fund their independent animated movie Art Story about a young boy named Walt and his grandfather who get stuck inside famous paintings and have to find their way out by working together (there is also a villain as well...this is a kid's movie after-all).

So far the pair have raised over $200,000 of their $350,000 goal and, with only 7 days left, I think they can make it with your help.

So, how can we all chip in and make this happen?

Well, we can open our wallets and pledge at least $1, of course, but more importantly, we can share Aaron and Chuck's Kickstarter Page with everyone that we know who loves animation and who supports independent film.

The Doctor Is In. Again

Hurrah! Peter Capaldi is the new Doctor Who!  I'd heard rumblings about Capaldi a week or so before the announcement, so it's clear somebody at the BBC blabbed loudly this time around.

The BBC's revelation was accompanied by a live broadcast TV show, and on the run-up to the announcement I was heard mumbling "Please Capaldi…please Capaldi " over and over.

From the jubilant reaction of (admittedly, and thankfully, older) friends on my Facebook page, at least, I know I wasn't the only one.

I've enjoyed Capaldi's performances immensely over the years, and not only is he the only bona-fide Oscar winner on the Who production team (for his wonderful short film Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life, which I have on a VHS tape somewhere), but I was surprised and delighted to discover what a deeply entrenched old-school Doctor Who fan he was.

The mournful lamentations of pathetic little fangirls decrying on their loss of baby-faced crumpet was deeply satisfying to me: at 55, Capaldi is the same age as the first Doctor, William Hartnell, when he opened the Blue Box.

I'm relieved to see there's a role-model Doctor that's actually older than me back at the Time Rotor helm again.

THE AVENGERS-THEMED Vibrator Collection...Gives New Meaning To The Phrase "HULK SMASH"...If You Know What I Mean (NSFW)

Tumblr user Sarmai has pictorially created a line of Avengers-themed vibrators that I'm sure Marvel has already seen and has begun production on...if they're smart.

I mean, who wouldn't want to get acquainted with Captain America's patriotic pleasure stick or Thor's Electrical Stimulator?

Am I right?

Wow...I'm feeling a bit light-headed, must be because I am imagining how many hours I could spend alone with Hawkeye....Golly, I need some water.
