WHEN YOU TITLE YOUR MUSIC VIDEO SKULL FUCT There Should Probably Be Some Skulls and Fucting Going On

$

Are You Listening To Me Soldier?
So today I was a bit bored and randomly putting obscene phrases into my search engine when I came across the following music video called Skull Fuct by the band Light Asylum.

I had high hopes my friends, very high hopes.

But alas, there was no skull fucting going on, just a lot of War Horse-like riding scenes, guys with flashlight eyes, and some weird dude just staring at me off and on for five minutes.

I'm guessing this video has some deep and meaningful subtext that I just didn't get and far be it from me to judge the artistic merit of it but a word of advice, if you are going to promise skull fucting you might want to deliver.

Otherwise, what am I going to do with all of this lube.

Video after the break.

THE PULL LIST - Batman #5, Amazing Spider-Man #678, Venom #12 & More!

Check out what I checked out this week.

Whether the comics are inspiring or disappointing, I read them all.

Welcome to The Pull List.

And, as always...Spoilers ahead!

Batman #5 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Scott Snyder
Art: Greg Capullo & Jonathan Glapion
Colors: FCO
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

One of the great things about being a comic book fan is the moment you find the perfect book that completely captivates your attention from beginning to end.

Comic book nirvana has arrived as Scott Snyder puts Batman through the ringer in a story that has the Dark Knight battling his own sanity. Bats has been trapped in a dark labyrinth by the Court of Owls for eight days without food, water or rest. He hasn’t bathed or shaved, his costume is torn up and the white left eye piece is missing from his mask.

The missing eye piece is excellent because we see Batman’s true emotions as he is in unspeakable peril. Over the years I always wondered if a punch or kick hurt more than he let on or how horrified he was, if at all, when he examined a crime scene.  At one point the lights inside the labyrinth are turned on and a stylish Owl shaped water fountain is revealed. Knowing it’s drugged, Batman drinks the water without hesitation. The mind games begin to take shape as secrets are revealed and the horror is unleashed.

As you read the book, you get to a page layout where you have to turn the book left side up to make sense of it all. When you turn from that layout, the next page is upside down which looks like a mistake. You naturally turn it right side up to examine the page thinking you are correctly holding the book again. As you continue to read, it takes you a minute to realize that you’re reading the previous pages over again, thus, experiencing and sharing the mental madness Batman is going through. The ingenuity of it all was simple and brilliant. The art work is in sync with the story almost more than any other comic book I have read in quite sometime. Even this early in the year, Snyder’s number 5 has all the makings to be the single best issue of the year.

Grade: A+

Supergirl #5
Writer: Michael Green & Mike Johnson
Art: Mahmud Asrar
Colors: Dave McCraig
Publisher: DC Comics
Price: $2.99

After last month’s dreadful issue, Green and Johnson get back on track with a Supergirl story that answers some questions and presents some new ones.

Kara flies from Earth to Argo City to be reunited with her family even though Superman warned her of Krypton’s demise. She expects a homecoming and finds a grave yard. As expected, she is sad to discover the truth that Krypton is gone. The story is predictable since we knew what she was going to find and react. Green and Johnson did a great job of keeping it interesting despite previous knowledge on the readers part.

Kara uses the sunstone crystal to activate a holo message left by her father, Zor-El. He explains what happened and how he tried to save Argo City and all of a sudden he is brutally murdered and Kara watches on in sheer horror.

Superman never had to see his parents die but Kara will live with that image burned in her mind forever.

The artwork did a fantastic job of depicting Argo City as this cemetery lost in space and the color treatment was a little darker than previous issues which was perfect in this case because there is nothing vibrant or bright about Kara’s discovery. Oh yeah, a new enemy emerges which reveals one of Krypton's past indiscretions

Grade: B

The Amazing Spider-Man #678
Writer: Dan Slott
Art: Humberto Ramos & Victor Olazaba
Colors: Edgar Delgado
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

Dan Slott let Mark Waid play with his toys last week and now it’s his turn to give a free a highly entertaining Spider-Man issue.

The story begins with Peter Parker waking up in an extra good mood on a beautiful New York morning and he decides to walk to work instead of web slinging. Along the way he is reminded about how much he loves the city. At work, he is paired with an annoying colleague to work on a super science project that reveals a future NYC, totally destroyed and only Spider-Man hold the key to the cities salvation. The story provided a fun pace and the artwork was chopped full of stunning visuals and vibrant colors that were absent in the last issue.

This was my pick of the week until I read Batman and that is not a slight at all. Overall, this book reeks of awesomeness and the ending guarantees your next appointment in February.

Grade: A

Green Lantern Corps #5
Writer: Peter J. Tomasi
Art: Fernando Pasarin & Scott Hanna
Colors: Gabe Eltaeb
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

Guy Gardner is mad as hell and is looking to take out the Keepers once and for all and he is looking for the toughest son of bitches to help. Kilowog points him in the direction of a particular clique of beer drinking, card playing, cigar smoking, wise cracking, bad ass mofos called “Mean Machine” to help him in his endeavor.

Guy asks for their help and tells them that he is not interested in diplomacy, but wants to “Bring the Pain”. That gets their juices flowing and they accept.

Martian Manhunter appeared in the last issue and stuck around in this issue to reveal to Gardner and his squad the true origin of the Keepers which leaves them completely floored.

J'onn’s interactions with Guy was weird and cool at the same time because this is their first encounter and Guy doesn’t know if he can trust him.

Tomasi’s writing was fantastic through out the book and was topped off by a chilling statement from J’onn as he addressed the Corps saying “You failed Krypton, you failed my home world of Mars, DON’T fail Earth”. There is so much more that unfolds in this book but I’m not going to spoil it all.

Grade B+

Ultimate Comics Spider-Man #6
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Chris Samnee
Colors: Justin Ponsor
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

It’s Miles Morales’ first official day as the new Spider-Man and he is taking his job seriously even while having a few hick ups along the way.

The ultimate version of Scorpion makes his debut in this issue. Bendis does it again by producing a script that continues to make the reader emotionally invested in Miles. Ganke, Miles’s best friend, insists he needs to watch footage of Peter Parker in action to be a better superhero in a door bursting scene that is sure to put a smile on your face and captures the essence of what makes this series nearly just what the doctor ordered. Chris Samnee filled in for Sara Pichelli and her work was missed. That is not a slight on Samnee’s work at all because it was very good.

However the Bendis, Ponsor and Pichelli trio have this chemistry that is absolutely perfect for this character. I noticed the artwork popped a lot more when I read the free digital version that comes with the book on my IOS device.

This makes me wonder if this is why Samnee got the gig this month instead of Pichelli since Marvel is moving more towards the digital market.

Very fun issue all around and if you haven’t read this series yet, I suggest picking up the hardcover book containing the first five issues due to be out next month. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.

Grade: A-

Daredevil #8
Writer: Mark Waid
Art: Kano
Colors: Javier Rodriguez
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

Mark Waid pens his second comic book of the month as Daredevil #8 picks up right where TASM #677 left off as Black Cat believes Spider-Man framed her for a robbery but cooler heads prevail after some deliberation reveals that someone is trying to play them against each other in order to steal a high tech projector.

Waid scripted some amusing dialog and one page layout in particular comes to mind when Black Cat aggressively question a suspect and he screams “I WANT A LAWYER” and Daredevil nonchalantly replies “Trust me, it wouldn’t help. You want to calm her down, TALK”.

The art and writing maintain its stylish noir that really sets itself apart from the other comics on the market.

Grade: B+

Venom #12
Writer: Rick Remender
Art: Lan Medina & Nelson Descrasto
Colors: John Rauch
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $2.99

What happens in Vegas can't stay in Vegas as Rick Remender brings the noise as the Venom symboite can no longer contain it's rage and that means bad news for everyone else.

Jack O'Lantern is going toe to toe with an angry Venom while at the same time taunting with the reminder that his family will be murdered if he doesn't complete the heist. Meanwhile, Red Hulk has been dispatched by Captain America to retrieve the symboite and he is closing his objective.

The script was entertaining and the artwork really hit its stride when Venom's fury was at its apex and he is slamming, throwing, clawing, biting and just plain destroying everything in sight.

When this series first started I was skeptical if a black ops Venom would work. Well, the black ops stuff has been pretty cool and we get just enough of Venom we all know and love where we are itching to come back every month for more.

Grade: B

The Avengers #21 (Shelf Listed: Dismantlement of the Week)
Writer: Brian Michael Bendis
Art: Renato Guedes & Jose Magalhaes
Colors: Jason Keith
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Price: $3.99

The Avengers split up into groups of two in order to take on Hydra and Hammer. Spider Woman and Hawkeye combat Hulks with Spider powers and she tries to trick them into believing that she is a double agent by ordering them to kill Clint. Epic fail on her part and the execution of Bendis.

Red Hulk and Storm are fairing any better and Captain America, Vision and Maria Hill....well, you get the point. The book was meh at best but in my opinion it was just plain boring. This is was the first time I have ever fell asleep while reading something.

There are a crap load of Avengers books but how many times can you release an issue where the team it taken out and pulls out the hail mary finish at the last minute.  After awhile, it starts to get boring and not worth $3.99 for a weak story. If you not convinced just look at the cover. This issue all month was hyped as Storm's debut with the Avenger's and she appears in only two pages and she is out cold in both of them. Trust me, don't believe the hype.

Kevin Nealon is getting a little magical now that he has been cast in the NBC pilot Isabel.

According to Deadline, the Weeds actor will join the family comedy and continue acting on the long running Showtime drama. The new show Isabel is based on the French-Canadian Le Monde De Charlotte, Isabel which focuses on a normal middle-class family that has a "daughter with magical qualities."

Nealon will play a major role in the show as Isabel's father. He joins Marcia Gay Harder playing the mother and is said to play a "natural born insurance salesman." If the show is picked up for series, he will have a headline position.

Filming the show won't interrupt his work on Weeds which may be in it's final season if rumors are true. If Isabel goes to series he will have a headline position on the show.

Watch Ed Helms And Jason Segel Play Brothers In The Trailer For JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME

Nick, who lives at home (me), is pleased to share with you the trailer for JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME (from Paramount Vantage).

The film stars Jason Segel (THE MUPPETS, FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL), Ed Helms (THE OFFICE, THE HANGOVER), Susan Sarandon, and Judy Greer (Kitty "Say Goodbye To These!" on ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT). It comes from Jay and Mark Duplass, who also directed the off-kilter drama/comedy CYRUS starring Jonah Hill and John c. Reilly (Mark also stars on FX's THE LEAGUE).

While the trailer seems to blend comedy and drama much like CYRUS, I'm much more excited for the cast in this one; Helms and Segel are far more interesting to me than Jonah Hill (even though 21 JUMP STREET looks amazballs...).

Check out the trailer after the jump!

THE MYTHBUSTERS Have A Brand New Reality Show on Discovery

You probably know Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman as The Mythbusters, but now they have a new competition reality show at Discovery.

In a press release from the network it was announced that the duo will be the judges of Unchained Reaction. The new show features two teams going head to head in competitions where they build an "elaborate chain reaction contraption." The teams will be made up of artists, scientists, special effects specialists, engineers, and everyday people.

Adam Savage said, “We wanted to craft a show that puts the process of problem solving and ingenuity front and center, and we've done exactly that with Unchained Reaction.” Hyneman continued, “The innovative solutions and boundless energy demonstrated by the contestants surprised us every single time.”

The competition is very open ended and teams can create anything and continue on as long as they are able to trigger the next link in the chain. The teams are given the exact same tools and materials to work with and have five days to create a whole series of mechanisms.

Each week, Jamie and Adam are joined by a new guest judge to decide which team impressed them the most with their innovation, energy and how much spectacle they can create. Of course bigger is better, pyrotechnics are always good, and destruction is encouraged.

Eileen O'Neill, Group President for Discovery/TLC said “The spirit of Unchained Reaction is at the intersection of art and engineering, and Adam and Jamie are the masters at celebrating teamwork and gee-whiz wonder at how the world works. We are thrilled to bring this new series to our always curious and engaged Discovery Channel audience.”

TNT & Frank Darabont Want WALKING DEAD's Jon Bernthal For L.A. NOIR Pilot

Variety reports that Jon Bernthal (THE WALKING DEAD) is in early conversations with TNT to star in its period drama pilot L.A. NOIR.

Frank Darabont has shepherded the pilot along at TNT, which would make for a WALKING DEAD reunion of sorts if Bernthal signs on.

Should the deal close, Berthal would play Joe Teague, an L.A. cop dealing with corruption in the LAPD, involving "underworld figures," in the 1940s and 50s. Darabont wrote the script for the pilot which TNT greenlighted earlier this year.

Sounds like a great concept for a TV show, though I'd much prefer it was in AMC or FX's hands as opposed to TNT who only claims to "know drama." (Has anyone at TNT ever seen MAD MEN, BREAKING BAD, or JUSTIFIED? Cause THAT'S drama!)

While I have yet to watch THE WALKING DEAD (I've read the graphic novels!), I've posted my own personal favorite Jon Bernthal performance after the jump. It's hilarious, so hit that jump, son!

REESE WITHERSPOON And RYAN REYNOLDS Cast In BIG EYES

Produced by Tim Burton, Big Eyes now sees Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Reynolds in the cast of the indie flick.

Variety reports that the two will star in the biopic of Margaret and Walter Keane. The project will be written and directed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski. Tim Burton is set to produce through his Tim Burton Productions shingle.

The film is based on the true story of the Keanes' and the large eyed character painting which they became known for in the 60s. While it all seemed good to outsiders, their lives will filled with controversy as Walter stole the credit for the work that was really done by Margaret.

The writing and directing duo previously worked with Burton on Ed Wood and also have credits for The People Vs. Larry Flynt and Man on the Moon. When talking about the new casting the duo said "Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret -- soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself."

Reynolds can next be seen in Safe House next to Denzel Washington. Witherspoon stars in the upcoming action-comedy This Means War.

SMALLVILLE Showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar Hired To Write ROBOTECH Feature

Warner Bros has hired Alfred Gough and Miles Millar to pen their long-in-development ROBOTECH live-action feature film, per THR.

The pair previously worked together on SMALLVILLE, I AM NUMBER FOUR, SHANGHAI NOON, and the story for SPIDER-MAN 2.

ROBOTECH was an 80s cartoon series taking place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots using technology from a crashed alien spacecraft. The forces of Earth must use this newly found tech to fight off an impending alien invasion.

Akiva Goldsman is producing with Tobey Maquire, which leads me to the personal part of this story. I interned for Akiva's WEED ROAD banner 3-4 years ago, and while I was covering Goldsman's desk I answered a call from Tobey Maguire (about ROBOTECH) aka Spider-Man aka Seabiscuit himself! Such a movie-star interaction is among my favorite from my time spent in Los Angeles.  (My other two favs were standing feet from Harrison Ford when I worked on THE TONIGHT SHOW, and seeing Michael C. Hall aka Dexter and Ben Schwartz aka Jean Ralphio hanging out together at Arclight Cinemas Hollywood, but I digress...)

Lawerence Kasdan wrote the previous draft of ROBOTECH. Which begs to question, why need the rewrite? After all, Kasdan did write two little classics called RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. Hard to top that much HWood cred.

ELTON JOHN'S Rocket Pictures Picks Up NERDS For Animated Film

Elton John's company Rocket Pictures now has the film right to Michael Buckley's Nerds.

According to Deadline, the shingle has picked up the bestselling book series to turn into an animated film franchise. Buckley will be scripting the film with Steve Hamilton Shaw and David Furnish producing. Elton John is attached as an executive producer.

Nerds is a series of books that follow a group of unpopular and socially inept kids that run a spy network from inside their elementary school. The three books that have been released show the kids battling some sort of James Bond type villain in each story. The next book is due to come out in the fall.

Nerds is an action-filled comedic property with a great inclusive message at its heart,” Shaw said. “We think it has huge potential as a dynamic and modern family movie.”

Rocket Pictures most recently produced the 3D animated Gnomeo & Juliet. The company also created Rocketman, a biographical musical-fantasy film about the life of Elton John.

A New Seduction of the Innocent Part I—Responding to Fox’s Attack on the DCnU

$
0
0

Last week, while watching the premiere of J.J. Abrams’ latest opus, Alcatraz, a particular commercial aired no fewer than six times that piqued my interest.

Now, anyone who knows me can tell you there are a few things I’m quite passionate about.

Politics and history. Comic books. Natalie Portman. The Yankees. The nightly news.

Natalie Portman.

That wasn’t a typo. She’s there twice for a reason…

So when I saw an advertisement for an upcoming news report on comic books being done by the very same local Fox affiliate that interviewed me after bin Laden’s death last year, I was initially excited.

But it wasn’t long before I realized that, based on the preview, it wasn’t going to be a news report, so much as a modern day revival of Fredric Wertham’s Seduction of the Innocent, particularly as it ended by extolling parents to get the scoop on the comics out there now “before they can corrupt your kids.”

Yeah. That was exactly how it was phrased.

Not, “See what’s out there and be a parent and determine if these books are appropriate for the age and reading level of your child,” but, basically, “Your kids are getting mind#^@$ed by DC Comics so here’s why you should be outraged and appalled.”

This is the same network that airs THIS show during “family hour,” mind you…

Still, putting on my Open Mind Thinking Cap, I tuned into the newscast to see it for myself.

The target of the piece was the content of the books in the DCnU that launched in September 2011, particularly the “graphic violence and sex” of its “edgy makeover.”

Underneath an overly dramatic and hyperbolic voiceover that would have made anyone at the WWE envious, reporter Sherri Ly focused on comics not being kid friendly and how modern comics “would make Archie and Veronica blush” due to content that, according to her, did not exist in the comic world until recently, including sexually explicit scenes and bloody battles and gore.

The report is indeed correct in its assessment that comics today have much more graphic imagery as a whole than they did even 20 years ago.

But it focuses on this imagery under the erroneous assumption that today’s books are marketed towards today’s kids, particularly by spotlighting two titles—Catwoman and Red Hood and the Outlaws—that are rated T+ for older teens and adults, though, to be fair, I’d argue the ratings could be a little more prominent on the covers.

I’m not saying DC can’t do a better job of making that clear…
Comics have long held the stigma of being just for kids, but over the past ten to fifteen years, the industry has shifted to a more adult demographic.

DC’s Executive VP of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development John Rood stated that, “To spend our resources in the most efficient way possible, our buying demo was adults 18-34, knowing that we were going to get favorable spillage south of 18 and favorable spillage of viewers and Website visitors, and theatre patrons north of 34 years of age.”

But the report is less focused on why that is than it is with hammering home its indignation at the content.

I won’t argue and say that comics don’t have highly sexualized or violent content much more often nowadays.

I won’t even argue and say that this hasn’t caused some consternation, especially amongst females, within even the target demographic and turned off some readers.

Superboy Prime’s numerous killing sprees didn’t sit well with all readers, for example.

But I will argue against the assumption that this is all new to the industry, or that it is any worse than what today’s youth are exposed to on a regular basis.

Ms. Ly seems much more interested in helping to peddle the old chestnuts of kids reading such comics as being at risk of committing aggressive acts, bolstered by ad hominems from psychologist Neil Bernstein despite his lack of solid scientific evidence, than she is at understanding the rating systems that DC has voluntarily implemented on their titles.

Even after being shown the ratings, and being told that the president of Big Planet Comics points kids away from such books, she does the only logical thing—she brings them to a middle school to show kids outside of the demographic the very books her report is claiming are bad for them.

So, you’re reporting on how these images can hurt children, then you find out the images are not intended FOR children…so you decide to seek out those children and show them the images anyway.

Anyone else know what happened to that train of thought?

THIS. This happened to it.

Seriously, how does Ms. Ly follow that up? Head down to the local high school and slip a few kids some Marlboros and Budweisers to “expose” the dangers of underage smoking and drinking?

In Part II of our discussion of this report, we’ll further weigh the overall merits of Ms. Ly’s arguments and compare the content of the DCnU to other forms of media that are readily consumed by our youth, so tune in tomorrow for a very special Wednesday edition of Theater of the Absurd

“Look, kid, you’re not meant to have this, but do a quick kegstand so I can write about the evils of the alcohol industry!”

Tom Riley Is Starz's Leonardo Da Vinci In A New Series From David S. Goyer

$

Deadline reports that British actor Tom Riley has been cast as Leonardo Da Vinci in Starz's new series DA VINCI'S DEMONS.

Riley plays a younger Leonardo in the drama which is described as a historical fantasy following the "untold" story of the genius during his youth in Renaissance Florence. The twenty-five year old da Vinci is an artist, inventor, swordsman, lover, dreamer, and idealist who "begins not only to see the future but to invent it."

The project hails from David S. Goyer (THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, MAN OF STEEL) and BBC Worldwide. Said Goyer on his project:
“Given that da Vinci was the model for the ‘Renaissance Man,’ these were incredibly large shoes to fill. Leonardo had to be smart, witty, and incredibly confident – without coming across as arrogant. He also had to be tormented, because, as a true visionary and polymath, he was ostracized for his ideas as much as he was celebrated. Tom [Riley] came in and was able to effortlessly combine all of those elements. As soon as he finished his audition, we knew we’d found our man.”
All this comes mere months after Universal made their intentions clear to turn da Vinci into an action hero, akin to what Warner Bros. has accomplished with their SHERLOCK HOLMES franchise.
