ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Can't Fix Crazy" S1E13 (Review)

by Elizabeth Weitz
When things fall apart, they usually go at the most inopportune time and in the most spectacular way possible. It's as if the "Bad" wants to be remembered in a way that will always outshine the "Good".

Case in point: The day I signed the papers on my very own house was so profound to me that I didn't think anything could get me as high walking around a dwelling that was mine, mine, mine but life (while categorizing the house buying memory as "Good") isn't really keen on the warm and fuzzy moments, and decided that the best course of action would be to have me almost die at the mouth of a freaking Tick (which apparently called somewhere in my house home) who happened to be laced with additional infections which tried its very best to eat my liver and pulverize my heart.

 See what I mean?

When the shit hits the fan, it's not with a graceful toss but with a mountainous SPLAT that not only keeps said fan from being able to turn, it also takes out a few walls behind it.

And for Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) that downfall is about to happen in a big way.

Drafthouse Films / Not Rated

Last night, I watched one of the most harrowing, disturbing and important documentaries that I've ever seen.

It's not the most structured documentary (it seems to jump around in time in ways that are a little bit confusing) or informative when it comes to the history of the events (it seems to have been made for people who grew up in the region and already know the history better than I do), but it packs an emotional wallop and delves into the subject deeper than most of us probably want to go.

The movie was called The Act Of Killing and the subject was basically genocide. It's about the gangsters who were hired by the Indonesian government in the mid-60s to wipe out Communists.

And, by "wipe out," I mean that they killed them in many horrible ways, lying about their reasons.

And now they're treated like heroes.

STAR WARS POLO SHIRTS: The Best Way to Look Professional While Still Maintaining Your Hardcore Nerdom

Being part of the normal workforce means that you are probably going to have to reserve your cool nerdy t-shirts for your off-hours when no one who lingers in your cubicle farm will see them.

In other words, you will have dress like all the other drones while your individuality suffers.

But no more!

When you slip on one of these business casual Star Wars Helmet polo shirts, you will still look like a bland asshole schlepping paperwork but with one big difference, an embroidered helmet of a SW character will be resting above your nipple.

Yay! You can still be a big ole nerd while keeping in line with the soul-sucking dress code of your working environment.

Sometimes rebellion can be small people.

More shirts after the break.

Summer Reading Rarities

As we’re now deep into the heart of summer, you’re either on your planned vacation, or will be leaving for sunnier climes and warmer weather soon.  You’ve also probably scrutinized the various recommended summer reading lists, whether in the last dying few print publications that feature these lists, or perhaps a bookstore display or two, or scouring the various suggested and selected lists online.

Well, here’s a different kind list.

You won’t find your recommended chick lit beach reads, or your chilling horror mass markets to enjoy under the warm sun, or the moving memoirs, or even the diverse and multi-cultural nonfiction you deliberately picked up to make yourself feel better about yourself and more widely read.

Most, if not all of these books, you’ve probably never seen before.

And here’s your chance to check them out and maybe select one or more for your eyes and mind to enjoy, as your skin basks in that summer warmth.

SCIENTISTS Grow A Tooth From Urine

$

My what a wonderful world we live in.

We have access to streaming television which allows us to watch whatever we want when we want it, a single tablet can hold every book from a library so that we never again have to choose between precious tomes when we head out on vacation and now, our own pee can be used to grow a tooth.

Yep...pee.

Apparently Chinese scientists have used urine stem cells to grow a human tooth and, although the science is still at a very early stage and there seems to be a risk for bacterial infection, there's a good chance that somewhere down the road people are going to be able to have their noggin filled with piss teeth.

Glorious.

Below is a picture of what those pee-pee teeth look like at various stages of growth:

On a side note, I am now wondering about the make-up of all my exes who I truly believed were full of shit. If we can grow teeth from urine, I don't see why assholes that I once loved couldn't have evolved from excrement.

It's food for thought.

MY TOP 5: BEST PETER O'TOOLE FILMS

"I had the great honor of shaking his hand once!"

On this day in 1932, one of the greatest actors of all time was born.

Maybe that's pushing it a little bit, but not much. Peter O'Toole is a great actor and one of my favorites.

He's done everything from deep drama to hilarious comedy to musical to fantasy.

His announcement last year that he is retiring is a sad, but not unexpected one. The man is, after all, 81 years old.

He was still doing great work, but I guess he knows when it's time for him to pack it in and enjoy life without work.

Here are five movies to watch to break yourself into the world of Peter O'Toole.

WALKING SHELTER SHOES: 'Cause You Know You're Gonna Need Some When You Are Camping Out For Tickets To See The Next 'Star Wars' Movie

An invention might look weird at first glance but the more you think about it, the more sense it sort of makes.

Take these concept tent sneakers by Sibling (a design collective out of Australia) which marries the practicality of running shoes with the shelter of a one-man tent.

Just think how handy these shoes could be if you were say, hiking in a rough territory and couldn't make it out by dark, waiting outside in line for primo tickets and it starts to rain or, even better, wanting to be left alone in your cubicle so that you can finish a report without being interrupted by the constant pop-ins from co-workers.

Why, the idea of a sneaker tent isn't that crazy at all (well, it is but still, it's pretty neat).

After the break are a bunch of pics showing how this amazing and slightly psychotic product works....hmmm...I wonder if Survivor Man is available for an endorsement deal?

TRUE BLOOD: "Dead Meat" S6E8 (review)

By Caitlyn Thompson
“The show makes semantic sense but things seem nonsensical”

Things are getting weirder and weirder on this show.  As this is not the proclaimed final season of True Blood, the series is following a pattern similar to supernatural shows when they have nowhere to go.

Anything to make characters suffer is being carried out. And then the next crazy plot-problem arises. Circle circle.

Tonight’s theme was an over-commitment to immediate (usually random) and eternal love. It seems that all actions are motivated by unexpected eternal devotion.

Every time a new character is introduced, we usually see them naked and then they profess their everlasting love. It’s a little odd considering how little time passes.

Not just because relationships need time to develop, but because recent traumatic events happened only days ago.

Seems no one needs any down time before their next life-hurdle.

Coping mechanism on True Blood is to find a new forever.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Joan Jett- "Light of Day"...Yeah, Joan Jett Made A Movie With Michael J. Fox...And It Was Glorious

$

Back in the mid-eighties when Michael J. Fox was king of TV and movies, he paired up with the baddest female rocker on the planet, Joan Jett, for a little movie called Light of Day.

The premise of the movie was typical of the time, two siblings are in a rock band together called The BarBusters, Jett plays the single mom who dreams of a rock-n-roll life and has a semi-neglected kid (of course) and Fox plays her brother who pulls away from the band to take better care of his nephew. We all know what happens, Mama Jett learns the very valuable lesson that if you are a woman who pumps out a child sans a hubby, you are not allowed to go after your dreams because that makes you a selfish whore...yadda, yadda, yadda.

It's actually a pretty good movie (directed by Paul Schrader in his first PG-13 rated film) and I used to watch it everyday after school 'cause I had a hopeless girl crush on Joan Jett and wanted to be like her.

Unfortunately, I also liked El Debarge at that time so my coolness wasn't quite up to the Jett standard and thus I was only Jett-light (meaning I had a leather jacket but I wore it with a pastel pink skort).

But even if I'm not as hot as Jett, at least I have always had the title song from the movie playing in every version it was released in on my person at all times (because I'm that awesome).

So, after the break take a look at the music video (which has scenes from the movie) and rock hard. Or at least as hard as you feel comfortable doing.

BOSTON COMIC CON NEWS ROUND-UP!

Report by Stefan Blitz and Clay N Ferno

Rumor has it that Boston Comic Con doubled in size this past weekend, which comes to no surprise to the attendees who found themselves packed like sardines in a newer, larger venue, The World Seaport Convention Center.

Postponed from April following the Boston Marathon bombings, the 2013 Boston Comic Con has become a rarity among conventions, a show which primarily focuses on comics.  This year, there were several media guests including voice artist Billy West, The Walking Dead's Laurie Holden, True Blood's Kristen Bauer, and The Hobbit's Aidan Turner and Dean O'Gorman.  But these guests were kept apart from the regular high profile comic guests who were mixed among the self publishers, artists and dealers.  Only cosplayer Yaya Han was mixed among the comic-centric guests who included the unquestionable star of the con, writer Scott Snyder, who's name seemed to be mentioned every five minutes over the speakers (to be fair, you needed a ticket to Snyder's table which was to eliminate the long lines a bit and try and stay a bit organized).

Among the guests were George Perez, Mike Mignola, Neal Adams, Joe Hill, Gabriel Rodriguez, Scott Snyder, Mark Bagley, Bill Willingham, Brian Azzarello, Nate Bellegarde, Buzz, Tony Daniel, Jim Calafiore, Howard Chaykin, Mike Choi, Ming Doyle, Joe Eisma, Agnes Garbowska, Michael Golden, Keron Grant, Paul Gulacy, Cully Hamner, Phil Jimenez, Dave Johnson, Barry Kitson, Aaron Lopresti, David Mack, Ed McGuinness, Terry Moore, Steve Niles, James O’Barr, David Petersen, Brandon Peterson, Joe Quinones, Khary Randolph, Tom Raney, Amy Reeder, Don Rosa, Craig Rousseau, Paul Ryan, Tim Sale, Alex Saviuk, Brian Stelfreeze, William Stout, Frank Tieri, Tim Townsend, Arthur Suydam, Dexter Vines, Anthony Del Col, Lee Weeks, Maris Wicks, Charles Paul Wilson III, Dean Yeagle, Chrissie Zullo, and hundreds more in the BCC Artist’s Alley.

One of the longest and steadiest lines throughout the weekend thanks mostly (although not entirely) to younger readers was for the Adventure Time team of Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb

Publishers IDW and Boom! were on hand, as were IDW Publisher and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall, Co-Publisher of DC Entertainment Dan DiDio, and DC Comics Art Director Mark Chiarello.

Forces of Geek's Stefan Blitz and Clay N Ferno each moderated two panels and could be found walking the floor chatting it up with various guests.

Here's some of the news that leaked out from the show.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED What Happens to Your Poop After You Flush It? Good News! Here's A Video All About It...You Coprophiliac

Nothing is more reviled to a human being than having to pinch on off.

Oh sure, it feels great to unleash a torrent of black pudding pops from your rectum when the pressure to do so is great and powerful, but the fact that this natural function tends to occur during times when it is embarrassing to do so (like on a date or at a business meeting) is what makes the process so horrific to us.

And really, let's face it, there is nothing sexy about it either.

But perhaps the question of "What happens to my poop after I flush?" is weighing on you after a particular Herculean dump and you are too scared to Google the answer lest a hit squad of government-employed soldiers burst into your home asking embarrassing questions.

Well, if that's the case then rest easy my friend, for after the break is an entire discussion (done on whiteboard) all about that very thing.

Don't worry, I'll always have your back...even if that includes your asshole.

DEXTER: "A Little Reflection" S8E6 (review)

By Caitlyn Thompson
Half the season has gone by and it seems it’s only now just beginning.

Dr. Vogel wants to try the code on Zach Hamilton.

Progress pretty much stops here.

Everyone is having issues with family and (ironically minus Deb and Dexter) pissing each other off.

Jamie vs Angel – Stop whining. I tune out every scene they’re in. It’s all too scripted and unnatural. The internal drama of Miami Metro isn’t spiking interest either.

Elway vs his sister – We already knew Sean Patrick Flanery was crushing on Deb. Didn’t need more scenes with him fuming in a bright shirt and adorable hat.

Vince vs Niki – Trying to create depth? Vince is fun as a goof. This far out, we don’t need extra sub-subplot.

Zach vs his Daddy – Should we call the waaambulance? I’m glad that this character is just trying to protect his mother, but I can’t stand that the writers are trying to forge him into a new Dexter.

Dexter has a complicated history.
