Film and television actor, Dennis Farina has passed away at the age of 69.

No additional information is available as of yet, but he will definitely be missed.

THE VENTURE BROS.: "Devil's Grip" S5E8 (review)

By Charles Knauf
Here we are folks; the season finale of The Venture Brothers.

After last week’s epic episode, I was really looking forward to seeing what Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick had in store for us and I have to say:
I’m a tad disappointed.

What I expected was some movement forward – perhaps some answers as to Sgt. Hatred’s past or some more moves in the ever-growing fight between the O.S.I. and the Guild of Calamitous Intent. Maybe even more personal growth with Hank and Dean.

Instead, we got kind of a flat episode that really shifted the entire season back to square one.

Supercut of VANILLA ICE'S 'ICE, ICE BABY' As Sung By Various Movie Clips...The Internet Truly Is A Miraculous Thing

It is important to understand that at one point in time, rap music was sometimes looked upon as being kinda scary for white suburban parents, so when a white rapper named Robert Matthew "Vanilla Ice" Van Winkle arrived on the scene, well, rap was suddenly considered okay by mom and dad (although, for most rap fans like myself, Mr. Ice was no match for the other Ice Men, Cube and T).

However, as much as I loathe the song Ice, Ice Baby, I do have to remark on its ability to infiltrate the brain and cause you to sing all the lyrics without you knowing you are doing so while the instrumental version plays at your local Target (which I have actually done much to the chagrin of my fellow shoppers).

So here's a little reminder of that infamous time when a guy who claimed to be from the ghetto filled the airways of radio stations everywhere and made the Sadie Hawkins dance Freshman Year so memorable for some of us, via various movie clips.

I'd tell you to enjoy it, but you won't once the song gets stuck in your head for twelve hours...it's like acid in that way.

By Caitlyn Thompson
Tonight I was watching with my boyfriend and asked him if he understood anything he was seeing. His reply, “No. I can’t. I can’t follow any of this.”

Agreed.

The Ridiculous-O-Meter that was ever-present during season five has returned and it exploded during this episode.

Don’t You Feel Me. A fitting title.

No, True Blood, I don’t feel you.

Red Sonja #1 (Pick of the Week)
Writer: Gail Simone
Artist: Walter Geovani
Colors: Adriano Lucas
Letter: Simon Bowland
Publisher: Dynamite Entertainment
Price: $3.99

Gail Simone is one of the more respected names in the industry whose reported firing from DC Comics’ Batgirl title sparked such fan outrage that she was hired back a few days later.

Simone’s take on the red-headed She-Devil generated a lot of buzz going into this past Wednesday.

After journeying through twenty four pages of superb storytelling and fierce imagery, I’m here to tell you, believe the hype.

Red Sonja's slightly refreshed origin story wastes no time in setting up a plot where the beautiful barbarian is charged with repaying a life debt.

What makes this moment poignant is how Sonja is portrayed as an unapologetic badass.

There was a fun moment where three would-be thieves attempt to pillage Sonja’s belongings. She is completely unfazed by this and draws the ire of the more daring thief by refusing to engage the trio because she doesn’t want to get blood on her horse. The blood splattering artwork of Walter Geovani shows how exquisite a sword through the head can look. “I can teach them tactics. I can’t teach them WAR” is Sonja’s motivation as she serves the king who granted her salvation in order to prevent the slaughter of a kingdom. In my humble opinion, there aren’t enough comic books featuring female leads.

This ongoing series is another great example of why there should be more, and the talents of Gail Simone is the perfect archetype to improve a glaring need.

HOW TO RECYCLE All Your COMIC-CON Swag Bags...And Look Damn Good As A Result

0
0

There's no name given to this dashing man who managed to fashion all the free Comic-Con swag bags he snagged into a jaunty lapel jacket, but that doesn't mean we should discount his genius because he is unknown.

For his creation has just given the closets of all Con Goers a little more breathing room now that we know what we can do with the endless amount of bags that we skim every time a geek festival comes to town.

So, if you have any sewing skills at all (or are friends with someone who does) hand over your yards of con-related fabric to the creative muse and make yourself a jacket you would be proud to wear out on the town.

If you'd like some instructions on making one, click HERE (you will need to purchase a jacket pattern from a fabric shop) or, do what I do, and suck up to someone who has far more talent than you do.

You will look simply sublime come next Comic-Con.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Soft Metals- Tell Me...Are You Ready To Feel Kinda Like A Pervert? If You Are, Enjoy the Video

Soft Metals may be an electro-music duo from LA whose melodic beats are strangely hypnotizing, but that's not the reason I'm posting their song Tell Me to the site.

I'm doing so because for four whole minutes I get to watch two people heavily making out.

Yeah, I'm lonely and have taken to the web in search of comfort now that my hubby is heading down to Austin for a "Science" convention (I put "Science" in quotes because I'm pretty sure he's using the trip to go stock up on stuff at Half-Price Books and hit up my old haunt Dragon's Lair Comics and Fantasy without me).

Of course, the result of watching the video is that you feel kinda pervy but I guess that's the point, after-all the video was shown at the 2010 Seattle Erotic Arts Festival (the 2013 festival starts on Aug 2-4 if you're interested in going) and I'm sure was created to make the viewer feel titillated.

Which I do in a very frustrated way...so thanks Soft Metals.

Video after the break.

ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Blood Donut" S1E7 (Review)

0

by Elizabeth Weitz
Power. It's is one of the most destructive desires that humanity ever created and there is so many degrees of it that half the time we aren't even aware that we yearn for it. Whether it is the most lukewarm want to have power over our need to consume a box of snack cakes at 3 am or the need to reign supreme over the universe, Power is the only thing that gives us the illusion of control in a chaotic world.

And the funny thing about it, is that no one has ever really had it at all.

Case in point, at Litchfield Prison POWER is the only currency that is traded. Money has no meaning when your basic needs are primarily met and the commissary manages to charge almost $6 for a Pepsi (who can afford that kind of luxury?) so the only thing left to deal in is Power.

When the newly elected members of the WAC assemble for the first time with Healey (Michael Harney) there is, at first, a real sense that maybe the inmates will finally have a voice and grab a bit of that power back in the form of 2 pillows per inmate, Rooster Sauce and access to 50 Shades of Grey (agreed upon by Taystee (Danielle Brooks), Maria (Jessica Pimentel) and Chang (Lori Tan Chinn) while Chapman (Taylor Schilling) is hoping to get preventative health care, educational opportunities and to have the running track opened back up...which no one gives a shit about when there's Rooster Sauce on the table for negotiation).

Of course, as we all know, WAC is merely an exercise in democracy and not an actual prospect. It's more like the faux elections that elementary students do when it's time for the country to elect a new President; they vote but none of it matters. And Healey knows this, in fact, the guard, who has always seemed to treat the women with a level of respect, is starting to show a real strain, both in his job and in his private life, and manages to turn WAC into more of a tea party (but with doughnuts) rather than an elected committee (after-all there's no money to get the things they want AND have doughnuts at every meeting).

THE GRUMPY CAT STAMP: Now You Can Send Those You Loathe A Personal Handwritten Response

0
0

While I appreciate the ease of staying in touch with family and friends via the series of tubes we call the Internet, I do miss writing letters printed on handmade paper and decorated in various ephemera.

I don't know, there's something really cathartic about handwriting all the reasons why someone has pissed you off until your hand cramps up and then sending it in the mail, knowing that in a few days, that person will feel your vitriol soak into their being as it is read off of real paper.

You just can't get that from a computer screen.

And now, as luck would have it, Grumpy Cat is available in stamp form that is USPS-approved to help that letter reach it's destination in all of its glorious pisstivity.

Just imagine how all your bills will look decorated with the "Not Amused" face of everyone's favorite upset cat.

Oh, the IRS alone will be decorated in it.

Get yours now and start sending out your frustrations.

It'll make you feel better.

Baserap Hears a Who—Getting In Touch With DOCTOR WHO on BBC America

0
0
It’s time for another one of my true confessions.

You paying attention?  Good.

I didn’t start watching Doctor Who until about a month ago.

I know, I know, it’s shocking, the sort of thing you’d have expected to have been leaked by Edward Snowden from a secret cave somewhere in the Caucus while dodging Predator drones.

But, seriously, while it’s obviously not really a big deal, you’d be surprised at how many people have looked at me quizzically over the years after asking me if I was a fan of the show and then finding out I’d never so much as caught more than a minute of it.

Needless to say, she totally didn’t have time for that.

I guess it’s because it’s just one of those shows that’s been such a “nerd” or “geek” staple, and a lot of us get grouped and stereotyped into having to like one thing or another all the time.  Somewhat related side confessions: Firefly bored me to tears and Star Trek wouldn’t interest me enough to watch regularly if Natalie Portman captained the bridge topless.

See?  We’re not all the same.

Even still, Doctor Who was a show I wasn’t watching simply because I couldn’t find the time.  It was always on my radar, and I’d heard from so many people that it was a lot of fun, but between work and writing and childrearing, well, there are only so many hours in a day.

Oh, who am I kidding?  I’d watch her bash America
on al Jazeera while wearing a burlap sack…

But a few weeks back, I wasn’t feeling too great and my wife got suddenly exhausted due to being pregnant and went to bed at like 8 pm on a Saturday and so I was alone, sick, and bored, with nothing but Netflix to love me.

And so I figured, “Eh, in lieu of a real doctor, let’s give this one a shot,” and I started with the first episode of the 2005 incarnation of Doctor Who.

To both my surprise and delight, it was definitely enjoyable enough to warrant watching a second episode.  And then a third.  And a fourth.  And a…well, you see where this is going.

No, you moron.  FIVE comes next.
Geez, the education in this country…

The show was cheesy and campy, but fun and entertaining, those latter adjectives by far trumping the former ones.  The production value of the opening scene practically screamed 1980s music video, and the T.A.R.D.I.S. flying through space and time had all of the special effects of Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, if those.

But I found myself drawn in regardless, and, yes, Billie Piper as Rose Tyler was definitely a help.

I almost enrolled in fake medical school immediately.

The Doctor himself, in this season only Christopher Eccleston, took a bit to grow on me, mostly due to his needlessly over-expressiveness during certain scenes like in “The End of the World” where he’s grinning like some idiot who just huffed some paint while the aliens enter the scene as if it’s the funniest thing he’s ever witnessed.

Just go back and watch that part again; it’s like he got into the paint chips.

But I came to really like him, his sarcastic pull-no-punches wit carrying several episodes, and I was impressed at his tenderness during “Father’s Day,” where he definitely put on his serious face, but still showed he felt for Rose’s ordeal during it all.

Not knowing anything but the broad strokes of the show, I enjoyed being able to be shocked and surprised by events, not having had them spoiled for me in advance, and while I knew Eccleston was only the Doctor for one season and that it would end with David Tennant coming in, it was still cool to see the shift happen.

It was definitely a pretty big change to be honest.

The show’s not perfect and some episodes grated on me—well, mostly some characters like the whiny little kid saying “mommy” eight billion times during the “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances,” or the voices of the Daleks or, as I call them, Steampunk Orkos—but the characterization and development was fantastic and guys like John Barrowman as Jack Harkness really brought a lot of entertainment value in those early goings.

I’m almost through the first David Tennant season and I warmed up to him quicker than I would have expected, at first being unable to see him trying to act tough—given him wearing pajamas and looking much more like a pretty boy compared to the soccer hooligan-esque Eccleston—but soon coming to absolutely love the guy.

I know there are twists and turns awaiting me.  I know companions and Doctors will change before I’m done watching, but that’s also part of the fun, getting to experience this world for the first time.

So while I’d not yet call myself a Whovian, I’d definitely call myself a fan—this was well worth the wait.

I’ve so got to get me one of these things…

SCIENCE GEEK NEWS: The Official Trailer For Cosmos- A Spacetime Odyssey Drops...As Does My Pants In Masturbatory Anticipation

0

I'm a Science Whore and I am very proud of it. In fact, growing up I regularly made out with Carl Sagan in my dreams and worshipped various scientists (especially biologist E.O. Wilson) and because of my supreme nerdiness (and body odor) I never felt the touch of a real human being until my late teens when I participated in the game Seven Minutes in Heaven and french kissed a guy who will remain nameless out of respect to his wife and kids (let's just say I never quite recovered from his "talent").

Of course, my science mania didn't fully materialize during my post-high school years mainly because I discovered after-hours dance clubs, 'zines and poetry slams in the 90's, but as I've gotten older, I've found that my need to read and watch Science programs has grown stronger and I've reverted back to my true state of Nerdhood proudly.

And now that Sexy Science God Neil deGrasse-Tyson is taking the reins from Carl Sagan and bringing back Cosmos to a television audience, I find that my underwear is getting moist in anticipation for what I hope will be an amazing journey deep within our universe.

And, after watching the trailer below, I hope you too will be scientifically satisfied by what you've just seen.

Now, if you excuse me, I'm going to lay down...I'm completely spent.

in defense of... 'DEAD SILENCE'

Director James Wan is on top of the world right now with his #1 box office smash The Conjuring giving major smack-down to a number of high-profile summer tent-poles from Hollywood.

I've been a fan of his films since he took everyone by surprise with the modest hit Saw, only to distance himself from creating a franchise out of it.  Not surprisingly, his next film after the low budgeted Saw was an over-budgeted horror tale backed by the genre's studio grand-daddy, Universal Pictures.

The film was a massive flop with audiences and especially trashed by critics.

Even if it suffers from being overblown in the budget department, and was probably hindered by pressure from the studio, Dead Silence is still an effective, creepy horror movie worth regarding.

Realistic RON JEREMY Mask Makes An Appearance At COMIC-CON And Scares the Sh*t Out Of Everyone

0

The creative demons of Hyperflesh (the folks behind those terrifying over-size baby head masks) have added celebrity/Porn Legend Ron Jeremy to their selection of masks (which includes Mike Tyson and Charlie Sheen) that is easily the scariest thing I have ever seen.

And yes, they released this horror upon the floor of Comic-Con last weekend where I'm sure frightened toddlers and virgins alike.

If you are looking for a Halloween costume that will most likely result in a mass panic attack from the public, I suggest going with The Hedgehog.

Of course, if you are looking for an upsetting group thing take a look at the pic after the break for inspiration.

I burst into tears when I saw it, so I'm sure it would work for all your horror needs.

A Few Thoughts On How To Make Batman/Superman The WORLD'S FINEST Movie

By Atlee Greene

I've wanted to see a Superman/Batman movie since before I could tie my own shoes. The confirmation of their silver screen duet, over the weekend at Comic-Con, has left fans drooling with anticipation. I geeked out so much over the announcement that I kept rereading the announcement over and over again to assure myself this is not a prank.

Summer of 2015 is only seven hundred days away, but who’s counting?
