Anybody In Need of A TURD TWISTER?

0
0

You know, I'm going to take a moment before getting into a product that fits up your butt so that you can create a decorative turd, to openly wonder why I have chosen a career in which I have to write about something of this nature.

Yeah, I know that I pretty much created this avenue of employment due to my inability to grow up and I completely understand that my lack of job opportunities directly evolved from the fact that I am incredibly lazy, but still, I am writing about something called a Turd Twister and no one has decided to step in and force an intervention upon me?

Surely there's some kind of therapy available for someone like me who has spent the past 15 years writing stuff which revolves around the advent of deranged products right? Like maybe shock treatment? Adderall enemas? A slow-release Flintstones vitamin patch? Anything?

You mean I have no choice but to write that the Turd Twister is dishwasher safe, that the "Extruder Ring" is held together by the power of your butt cheeks and should you feel that you might "accidentally" push that ring up into your rectum a bit too high, don't worry, you can always pull on your Safe-T-Floss to remove it (although if you are what is known as a sphincter-pincher, a heavier floss might be in order).

Oh dear god help me.... It also comes with a set of various shapes to turn your turd into:

I feel sick.

Contest! Win A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD on Blu-ray! Plus, John McClane's Best Moments

0
0
It’s hard to think of a more definitive, all-round American action-hero Dad than John McClane. This Father’s Day, John McClane teams up with his son to take out Russian terrorists in A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD (on Digital HD™ from May 14 and Blu-ray and DVD June 4).

To celebrate the ultimate action-hero Dad, we take a look back at the franchises’ best ‘McClane’ moments as we gear up for the upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release of the latest instalment.
Yippee-ki-yay, readers!

McClane Grabs a Gun From a Moving Sidewalk (Die Hard 2: Die Harder)

McClane has to crawl through a ventilation shaft (harking back to the original) to stop a team of bad guys killing an armed team who are escorting a comms expert to re-configure an antenna so the airport’s tower can talk to the planes above them. No biggy.

It’s business as usual for Die Hard but we’re given that little bit extra with McClane stuck under scaffolding, trying to reach a gun on the moving walkway before the last bad guy does him in. Normally any person pinned down to the ground in an airport would accept defeat, but not John McClane, who uses a moving sidewalk to make his handgun come to him.

The Vent Scene (Die Hard)

If this scene is iconic enough to be the inspiration for a Die Hard mural, here’s why: It epitomises McClane’s character as a whole - a man of espionage, a down-and-dirty blue-collar hero and most importantly, a cocky smartass.

The Bloody Feet (Die Hard)

A tense and unique sequence in the original Die Hard shows Gruber and his cohorts shoot the glass once they notice McClane is running around the skyscraper bare-footed. Although seeing McClane plucking of the glass out of his feet isn’t easy to watch, it’s one of the things that makes the original Die Hard so iconic. Sure, there are 13 terrorists against one rogue New York cop who is low on ammo, rest and patience. But why not throw in a set of torn-up feet to make the victory all the sweeter?

Ejector seat: (Die Hard 2: Die Harder)

There are a lot of awesome explosions in Die Hard 2, but this one was the money shot for the trailer. Trapped in a plane and surrounded by bad guys throwing grenades at him, McClane straps himself into the pilot’s seat and pulls the ejection lever, just before the plane blows up. This shot of McClane flying through the air sums up everything we love about our favourite action hero.

McClane Takes Out a Helicopter…With a Car (Live Free or Die Hard)

I’ll say it again. McClane takes out a helicopter…with a car.

In the big D.C set sequence, the movie’s cyber terrorists get wind of McClane and Ferrell’s whereabouts and send a chopper to finish the job. As our heroes become trapped in a tunnel, McClane drives a DC metro straight at the chopper while being shot at, finding an incline, and then launching the car into the air for a direct hit. Priceless. Who would have thought to use a cop car as a makeshift missile? Oh wait, that would be Lieutenant John McClane.

Simon Says “Take A Trip to Harlem” (Die Hard with a Vengeance)

Supposedly looking to avenge his brother’s death, Simon Gruber has his heart set on making life miserable for NY’s finest via an array of well-thought out tasks. Though it turns out that these are merely red herrings to distract the NYPC from the villain’s actual masterplan, they do happen to provide some of the most inventive plot devices in the entire Die Hard canon. Potentially the most dangerous of the tasks, this specific sequence requires McClane to stand in the middle of the notorious urban-centric district wearing a sandwich board with the words: “I Hate N____s.” To ratchet things up, Harlem shop owner Zeus (Samuel L. Jackson) acknowledges the cop before a group of Black males notice him, to which he warns McClaine with the line: “You are about to have a very bad day.” Classic McClane replies with “tell me about it.”

Now I Have a Machine Gun. Ho-Ho-Ho (Die Hard)

Although McClane is often bound by the rules of varying bad guy’s games, that doesn’t mean he can’t make them sweat! Case in point: one of his most effective, anxiety-producing statements, made to Hans Gruber in the first Die Hard, was the big reveal of a white-shirted terrorist bound to a chair, with McClane’s statement scrawled across it: “Now I have a machine gun. Ho-Ho-Ho.” It’s high-five inspiring enough, but hearing Alan Rickman as Hans read the whole thing off makes it doubly enjoyable. Displaying the personality trait that made John McClane such a well-loved character, rather than just dumping the body for the bad guys to find, McClane’s sense of humour turns Die Hard into a battle of wits, as well as a battle of one man against a building full of men with machine guns.

Yippee-Ki-Yay Mother F**ker! From: Every Die Hard, and we wouldn’t have it any other way

From the first appearance of the infamous quote in Die Hard 1 (It’s not necessarily a massive catchphrase the first time, with McClane whispering it into a walkie-talkie to Hans Gruber) to the gunshot that muffles an f-bomb and qualifies the fourth movie as PG-13, to the time he’s having yuks with Sam Jackson, or when he’s lighting an airplane on fire from a stream of jet fuel. Whichever film it is in the franchise, you know, this is the definitive Die Hard moment. It’s what qualifies John McClane as our own modern day John Wayne—er, Roy Rogers—a rogue badass hero who’s the right guy at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Nakatomi Plaza Rooftop Explosion Film: Die Hard

After rescuing hostages and dodging FBI helicopter fire, our hero needs an escape route before Gruber detonates explosives on the roof of Nakatomi Plaza. How does he escape? Simple. Bungee jump off the side of the roof, strapped to a fire hose and crash through the window of an executive’s office. Name another onscreen hero ballsy enough to do that.
And thanks to our friends at Fox (who provided the above copy), we're giving away two copies of the latest John McClane adventure, A Good Day To Die Hard on Blu-ray!

THE ROLLING STONES Are Officially Dead to Me

What I'm about to show you is going to rip you in half and then, subsequently, stomp you into a paste (that is if you happen to have been a fan of The Rolling Stones and especially of their song As Tears Go By which was done by the amazing Marianne Faithfull back in 1964 and then The Stones in 1965).

And no, I'm not overly dramatizing the situation at all (okay, maybe a little bit).

But really? Taylor Swift? You guys chose Taylor Swift to do a duet with during your 50th year tour? A duet that could have been done with ANY other legendary female singer available on the planet (Hell you could have had fucking Nina Simone piped in via a hologram and I would have applauded you) but no, instead of giving one of my favorite songs of all time the respect it deserves, you decide to pander to an audience who wouldn't know any of your songs unless it was in a commercial for burgers or an electronic device.

Awesome.

I hate you all so much.

Crap video after the break followed by two versions of the song worthy to be seen.

Dynamite Announces THE ART OF SEAN PHILLIPS

THE ART OF SEAN PHILLIPS HARDCOVER
CELEBRATES THE CAREER OF FAN-FAVORITE FATALE AND CRIMINAL ARTIST

Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce the October 2013 release of THE ART OF SEAN PHILLIPS by co-writers Sean Phillips and Eddie Robson, a career-spanning hardcover retrospective of the acclaimed Criminal and Fatale artist, including over 350 pieces of artwork, 70 never-before-seen illustrations, and exclusive interviews with the artist and his peers.

For THE ART OF SEAN PHILLIPS, the artist has personally selected the very best, most interesting examples of his art for inclusion, from comic strips assembled with childhood friends in his bedroom, through his work for British girls' comics and 2000AD, to his role as a key artist in the early years of Vertigo, through his superhero work for Marvel, DC, and WildStorm, and finally from his multiple creator-owned series with collaborator Ed Brubaker. Also, this lavish 312-page hardcover features extensive dialogues with Phillips himself, as well as contemporaries Ed Brubaker, Warren Ellis, Karen Berger, Jamie Delano, Dean Motter, Eddie Campbell, Axel Alonso, Joe Casey, Dave Gibbons, and many more.

"Putting this book together has been a welcome reminder that I might not have wasted my life drawing comics," jokes Phillips. "Looking back, I see that I've managed a wide variety of work in a range of genres that I might not have been that comfortable with drawing beforehand. That I can still bear to look at some of this work means that it's a lot better than I thought it was at the time that I drew it. It's never as good on paper as it was in my head, but seeing the highlights brought together in a proper hardcover retrospective makes me think that maybe I've got the hang of this comics stuff after all."

Eddie Robson, who co-writes the book with Sean Phillips, says, "You've got a selection of his best work, mixed in with stuff that's never been seen before, and stuff that really shows off his process and his evolution as an artist. It's a lovely object, so well-designed, and seeing all the material outside a narrative context gives you a fresh appreciation of Sean's work. But we were keen for there to be value in the text too, so it's 60,000 words, which would comfortably fill a 200-page paperback on its own. It's not just a few bits of puff to fill in the spaces around the artwork; it's a full and frank account of Sean's career from the beginning to the present day. It's really enlightened me regarding Sean's work and the craft of a modern comics artist generally, and thanks to all our contributors, I'm sure it'll do the same for everyone who reads it."

Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite, expressed his enthusiasm for the project. "Sean Phillips is one of the industry's top talents - a true visionary whose artistic prowess conveys such incredible depth and drama, you can't help but be drawn into his storytelling. I leapt at the chance to get this book published, and his involvement through every step of the process has been both invaluable and a pleasure. We couldn't be happier to place his retrospective on our bookshelf alongside our successful Alex Ross, Howard Chaykin, and John Cassaday art books. Now it's time to add the beautiful Sean Phillips hardcover."
After the jump check out some of the art from the book.

THAT'S WHAT SHE ALMOST SAID: Nine Seasons of Bloopers From THE OFFICE...Now That's A Spectacular Way To Waste Some Company Time

What better way to honor the end of almost a decade of The Office than by spending nearly two hours of your own work day watching outtakes from the show.

I did, but seeing that I work from home and rarely, if ever, get dressed, it didn't really have the ooohhh-look-at-what-I'm-doing-on-company-time pizazz I thought it would.

You know, I should really get a one of those jobs where you leave the house so things like this pack the emotional fuck-you punch I'm searching for...it would be kinda nice to shower every day AND wear deodorant.

History of Science Fiction Cinema: 1954: The Year of the Big Bugs, the Black Lagoon, and a Big-Ass Lizard Called Godzilla

1954, science fictionly speaking, started out with a creature that would become one of the most iconic monsters of all-time.

March would bring the release of Jack Arnold's sci-fi/horror hybrid, The Creature From the Black Lagoon.

Made famous by the creeping creature that was only protecting his underwater world from the human intruders, even more iconic than the creature himself, is that image of Julie Adams (then, still going by Julia) in that white bathing suit.  That was quite a sensation at the time.

Listen to FREDDIE MERCURY And DAVID BOWIE On the Unencumbered Vocal Track of 'Under Pressure'

Music and I are probably best friends. I know, I know, everyone is probably best friends with music but because I have no musical ability at all ( I got kicked out of Junior High choir for bringing down its integrity and was also forced out of band for the same reason) I spent much of my formative years alone in my room listening to blues, jazz, acid rock, punk, new wave, rap and every musical genre in-between until my body was permanently edged with lyrics and melodies.

And that is why I hate most of the music produced today. With all the auto-tuning, the lack of lyrical craftsmanship (except for Ben Gibbard of Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie fame who has managed to wow me with some seriously melodic poetry) and just plain awfulness, it's a wonder how anyone can call themselves a musician anymore.

And if you think I am kidding about how incredibly trite most music being churned out actually is, take a listen to the isolated track of Freddie Mercury and David Bowie's vocals for their duet Under Pressure from way back in 1981.

This is what talented voices sound like unencumbered by the techno-crap used today that makes everyone sound like the equivalent of biting into tinfoil.

Once you hear it, you're going to wish that there was a music start-over button somewhere that re-booted the entire system.

Triple Shot: DAREDEVIL: DARK KNIGHTS #1, ACTION COMICS #21, SAVAGE DRAGON #188

This week’s Triple Shot focuses on big dumb superhero action with more than one Daredevil and an unfinished script from Andy Diggle over at Action Comics #21 only a week before the highly anticipated release of Man of Steel.

ART: Lee Weeks

Price: $2.99
Publisher: Marvel Comics

Marvel’s Daredevil—The Man Without Fear. The alter-ego of blind lawyer Matt Murdock can tell us a lot about what we take advantage of in life as he faces loss constantly through his life. Writers from Miller to Bendis to Diggle skewed his character to the dark brooding Hell’s Kitchen son of a prize fighter and enemy of the Kingpin since the ‘80s.

Recently, we’ve praised Mark Waid’s serious but brighter take on Daredevil in his current Eisner Award winning run.

We’ve also mentioned Daredevil: End of Days, a future tale written by a super-team of Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack best compared to Dark Knight Returns. The final issue of End of Days also ships this week, to be reviewed later when the collected edition hits.

Daredevil: Dark Knights is an anthology mini-series with more of the great Marvel creators taking a shot at our red-horned attorney. Penciler Lee Weeks returns to the title by writing and drawing the first three issues of this anthology (his is the only story in each of these books).

Snow replaces rain in this book as the natural enemy and backdrop for this story.
As Matt awakes as a John Doe in the hospital when he awakes from his concussive state to hear a mugging in the emergency room. The hospital has become shelter for many desperate to escape the snow. Daredevil’s sensitive hearing makes him aware of a little girl’s heart transplant being delayed by a helicopter flight. He leaves to assist, but may be too late.

If this was the Daredevil book on the shelves monthly right now, it would also be winning Eisners. This is more of a classic superhero story than we are used to in comics today, but with a thick meaty story and no romantic overtures, we have ourselves a great companion limited series to the Mark Waid book, Daredevil fans will be quite pleased.

A COMPILATION Of Fan Reactions to Last Sunday's GAME OF THRONES

0

For those of you who are not caught up to the current episode of Game of Thrones, you should probably quit reading now and head to your DVR or HBO On Demand so that you can join the rest of us who make the time to see quality television.

Anywho, Sunday night's episode caught so many fans (who did not read the books) off guard that you would have thought that HBO personally raped each and everyone of them with a sword, and for that, I am eternally thankful because the reactions to what took place are so priceless and unabashed in intensity that it makes me laugh every single time that I see this video.

And if you are wondering why some of the people watching didn't seem to react at all to the horror unfolding upon the screen (next their dumbfounded friends), that would be because they already dealt with this trauma while reading the books...you remember that day when they couldn't seem to get out of bed and were crying for hours right? This is why.

For The Love Of Superman

I've got Superman on the brain, folks.

While I am more widely known as a Batman devotee, I enjoy the Last Son of Krypton as well.  Next week comes Man of Steel, so it's time for the Superman fans to shine.

I also have been reading Superman comics off-and-on for the past 20 years, and watching the DC Animated projects over the years. I am hoping that we finally have the modern Superman movie.

There's a lot to like about Superman.

Of course as a by-product of watching this short video (which was part of a sex-ed film to help educate the mentally-disabled in 1975 called The ABC of Sex Education for Trainables-the fuck?) you too will have much difficulty being able to rub one off as well.

Aussie-Made Madmen Dishing Out Japan: An Interview With The Brains Behind MADMAN ENTERTAINMENT

0
0
Released to celebrate the 300th role of iconic Japanese actor Kazuo Hasegawa, An Actor's Revenge (Yukinojo Henge) is a superbly eclectic offering from director Kon Ichikawa (The Harp of Burma), as surreal as it is stylized and mesmerizing cinema.

Hasegawa plays the double-role of Yukinojo Nakamura - a kabuki actor who (like Hasegawa himself) is renowned for being an onnagata, or female impersonat'or - as well as the dashing thief Yamitaro, who likes to behaves a bit like, well, Robin Hood.'

When Yukinojo chances across the three men who drove his parents to suicide decades earlier, he sets in motion a plan for revenge worthy of Shakespeare; what he discovers he can't control are the ulterior ramifications of this revenge-play, as his actions shatter innocent lives.

It's difficult to overcome the fact that lead man Hasegawa was pushing 55 here; while he was reprising a role he played before (in 1935), he's obviously too old to push the sensuality angle of the onnagata, yet still somehow tweaks it on several levels.

For his part director Ishikawa doesn't even try to suspend disbelief. Into this high drama he winds liberal doses of comedy, kabuki-style sets and visuals that are stretched out within a pop art context, and some innovative sword-fighting moments that border on the dream-like.

Realism this most certainly is not, and that's the film's beauty.

Adding to the spice in An Actor's Revenge is a modern jazz soundtrack, while the acting chops are ably supported by Shintaro Katsu (of Zatoichi fame) and the stunning Ayako Wakao, who previously shone as Eiko in Kenji Mizoguchi's The Geisha (1953), and is devastating here.

While not Ishikawa's grandest achievement, it's still a hypnagogic gem well worth the viewing, and the cool cats at Madman Entertainment in Australia made it available to the domestic market there for the first time in 2010 - which is how I picked up the DVD.

Madman have been doing some magnificent things, not only helping to establish a foothold Downunder for pioneers of Japanese movie-making like Ichikawa, Akira Kurosawa, Seijun Suzuki, and their ilk, but creating inroads for contemporary anime. In fact Madman has held well over 95% of the local market of things Japanese for over a decade.

So, being a fellow Aussie, not to mention also from Melbourne, I felt it was high time we had a chat about these particular things. I ended up talking with Christian Were (the product manager of Madman's Eastern Eye/Asylum offshoots) and Sylvester Ip (product manager for Anime). For simplicity's sake in the following Q&A, let's mark them down as CW and SI.

Sadako waits. And it's not just on tape anymore.

BEFORE MIDNIGHT (review)

Review by Caitlyn Thompson
Produced by Richard Linklater,
Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Sara Woodhatch
Screenplay by Richard Linklater, Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy
Based on Characters by Richard Linklater and Kim Krizan
Directed by Richard Linklater
Starring Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy

Sony Pictures Classics / Rated R

Before Midnight, the third installment of Richard Linklater’s exquisitely realistic portrayal of love, is a beautifully authentic display of a seasoned relationship.  Actors and co-writers Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpey bring both a natural rapport and chemistry to their performances .

Nearly twenty years ago, we met Jessie (Hawke) and Celine (Delpey) in the first film, Before Sunrise. The pair fell in love but is unfortunately separated by distance and circumstance.

They meet again nine years later in Before Sunset when Jessie’s national bestseller based on their experience brings him abroad. The end of the second film leaves us with the implication that Jessie may leave his wife in the US and start a life with the true love of his life, Celine.

The first two films were a unique and candid display of these two individuals’ views of love, politics, and life. The evocative nature of the series stems from the presentation of their private conversations. The audience is a fly on the wall bearing witness to Jessie and Celine’s opinions and passionate insights. It was amazing that as soon as Delpey and Hawke began talking in Before Midnight, I felt at home. The atmosphere is so sincerely familiar, even when it aches with doubt as the movie progresses.

Before Midnight is different than its predecessors.

As far as coming-of-age films go, The Kings of Summer is authentic and funny without being overly dramatic or trite.

It’s a unique story of three teenage boys who decide that the only hope for independence from their overbearing parents is to run away and build/live in a house completely secluded in the woods.

Luckily it’s not too far from a Boston Market.
