INDELICATE DOILY COASTERS: A Gracious Host Provides the Drinks While Gracious Guests Stop Ruining the F*cking Coffee Table

$

I have noticed that in the last few years guests who come to my home seldom use the coasters I put out for them, and instead proceed to drop sweating glasses of booze on top of my books, coffee table and even my fucking life-size Yoda for no other reason than to establish their douchebag-ness.

And, seeing that I am old and have no desire to make new friends, I've decided that the best course of action in educating my frenemies in social decorum would be to present them each with a carefully chosen coaster that best represents their personal issues via the Indelicate Doily Coasters. Which, if those assholes read the coaster, should make them more aware of my need to not clean wine stains off my 1st edition copy of Jonathan Lethem's Motherless Brooklyn.

With words of wisdom like: Don't Stain My Table Douchebag, You're Welcome Asshole, Be Considerate Bitches and, my personal favorite, Even Skanks Say Thanks, I'm pretty sure my friends will get the point.

And if they don't, well, let's just say that I'm not above spiking everyone's drink with ipecac.

You've all been warned.

In last month's Flash In Japan we set the stage by asking a few upcoming international artists to tell us their thoughts on Japan—from manga through to the country's culture—and you can read Part 1 here.

These people are all young, pushing the perimeters of comic book and sequential art along with visual stills, and they're ones I worked with closely in the development of an upcoming noir/comicbook novel, Who is Killing the Great Capes of Heropa?, out later this year through Perfect Edge Books.

Katsuhiro Otomo's innovative, mind-blowing Akira (1988)

So, for the merry month of May we're continuing our insightful yack, this time focusing on that bastion of global fascination: anime.

By Kate McKendry
Sorbet begins with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) talking to his class about how the Chesapeake Ripper kills in sounders of three.

He refers to the groupings as sounders because sounders are small groups of pigs - how he believes the Ripper sees his victims.

He mentions that the organs were removed with surgical know-how, a distinct feature to look for in their killer. He brings up Miriam while Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne) looks on from the hallway.  He mentions how no trace of her had been found unlike the other victims, until the Ripper purposefully left her severed arm to be found.

He tells his class that the Ripper has remained consistently theatrical over the years since he began his killings.

Dr. Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) attends an opera and is the first to give a standing ovation.

Bullet Point Review: THE GREAT GATSBY

I recently attended an advance preview of The Great Gatsby shown in 3D.

While a lot of people will be familiar with F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel - as well as Robert Redford's 1974 movie - so I'll not drone on about the story here.

Sure, there are some variations but I don't like to spoil everything.

Instead, here's my slightly enigmatic, spoiler-free bullet-point review of the movie so you can get a taste without the full calorie guilt.

The Great Gatsby directed by Baz Luhrmann opens May 10, 2013, and stars Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Toby Maguire (Nick Carraway), Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton) and Cary Mulligan (Daisy Buchanan).

Produced in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the publication of The Great Gatsby, this fascinating documentary explores the turbulent life and dark creative spirit of its writer, F. Scott Fitzgerald. It examines his disappointing college days at Princeton, his disastrous marriage to Zelda, his difficult relationship with Hemingway, and his tendency to sell out and compromise his talent for cash, which led to his turbulent last days in Hollywood. It dispels the age-old mythology surrounding Fitzgerald, largely created by himself, which tends to glamorize the Jazz-Age and his alcoholism. Including contributions by the author's granddaughter Eleanor Lanahan, plus writers Hunter S. Thompson, George Plimpton and Jay McInerney, this program presents a fascinating portrait of this most enduring American icon.
And we're giving away three copies!

DA VINCI'S DEMONS: "The Tower" S1E5 (review)

In The Tower, Leonardo da Vinci (Tom Riley) is in prison for accusations of sodomy against Jacopo Saltarelli (Christopher Elson), a male prostitute he once painted, all the while having nightmares about bats in a cave (something literally straight out of Batman Begins, a film also written by this TV series’ creator, David S. Goyer) and trying to figure a way out of his complex cell (see also The Dark Knight Rises).

There are even palpable visual similarities between those two Batman films and the jail scenes in this episode.

MUSIC VIDEO MONDAY: Eric Burdon and Jenny Lewis- Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

$

The song, Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood has been covered so many times (most notably by Nina Simone- who it was written for originally- and The Animals) that I believe it comes standard with every recording contract since 1964 with the stipulation that when you sign at the bottom line that you must, at some point in your career, put the song on one of your albums.

Think I'm kidding?

There's been a disco/salsa version of the song (Santa Esmeralda), a doom metal version (Place of Skulls), a dance version (No Mercy) and well, basically any and all other music styles you can think of.

But this version by The Animals front man Eric Burdon (who has continuously added various covers of the song to his repertoire) and Jenny Lewis (which appears on the True Blood: Music From the HBO Series Vol. 4) has just enough creep factor to make it unique and worth listening to (and the kinetic text in the video isn't half bad either).

So sit back, boot up the video and you know, get excited for True Blood Season 6 coming next month.

DOCTOR WHO: “Nightmare in Silver” S7E12 (recap)

Okay, this seems like a basic formula of the laws of space and time: Doctor Who plus a script penned by Neil Gaiman plus the classic Doctor foes the Cybermen with an “upgrade” is going to equal awesomeness.

It’s solid, but if you were hoping for something with the gravitas of last season’s “The Doctor’s Wife,”you didn’t get it. “Nightmare in Silver” is a different story with a different tone, but it didn’t disappoint.

There were so many fun things about this episode, it’s going to be hard to try to capture them all.

WINNER OF THE 2013 Invention Award Gives the World Cardboard Transportation Technology...For $30

Israeli engineer Izhar Gafni did not set out to create a bike from cardboard back in 2009.

Instead, what he was doing was sitting in a library designing a machine that would pick the seeds from pomegranates when his mind began wandering about  (as all minds bored of pomegranate seeds extracting machines must do),  until it finally settled on a memory of him doing his favorite thing, riding a bike.

He started thinking about the forms of bikes that he liked (bamboo frames) and how expensive they were to own, until a very interesting idea popped into his head, "Why not make a bike from cardboard?"

So, armed with nothing more than a vision, Gafni spent 2-years (and $250,000)  to create an actual bike that worked.

MR. SELFRIDGE S1E7 (recap)

Episode 7 of Mr Selfridge was like a chess game, with characters moving around the board in all directions, backward and forward.

Some are in danger of being knocked off the board, while others are slowly leaping over their opponents and allies to victory.

Let’s take a look at what went down in the penultimate episode with the series’ couples…

Harry and Rose Selfridge (Jeremy Piven and Frances O’Connor): The Selfridges were both visited by unwelcome acquaintances from their past in this episode. Harry’s was a run-in with Ellen Love (Zoe Tapper) in the Palm Court restaurant at Selfridge’s, but thankfully it is brief and amicable, however awkward

STAR WARS FANS, You Just Got Served: These Star Wars-Theme Wedding Invites Will Upset Lesser Jedis' Midichlorian Counts

There has always been a nerd war raging over who is the biggest Star Wars fan, but I have to say that Homer Liwag just might win the award for Über Dork judging by these amazingly detailed wedding invitations he designed for his nuptials with fiance Aimée Reich (An Indiana Jones fanatic).

Now, I could go into minute detail about the beauty and wonder of these creations, dissect the epic homage to a trilogy that changed a generation or simply blather on and on about how awesome it was that they got married on May 4th, but you know what?

Just look at the photos after the break and enjoy them as I do.

'Cause I have a feeling you will be pining after them for years to come.
