THE HISTORY OF TYPOGRAPHY: An Animated Short For Those Who Become Sexually Aroused By the Alphabet

$

I have several friends who, when the discussion turns to font style or letterpress printing, become flush around the cheek area and proceed to excuse themselves to a bathroom for around five minutes to "freshen up" (aka: masturbate) before coming back to chime in with their opinions on the matter. Now, usually I ignore the fact that my friends become sexual deviants in the presence of what I perceive as a mundane subject because if I didn't, the fact that I am sitting next to someone with a huge boner because I mentioned the word "Kerning" would upset me (and don't get me started on what occurs when I say "X-Height"...it's simply too gross to explain).

But I can live with these inappropriate people because I like them (even if their sexual predilection is severely off-putting).

So, to indulge in what I like to call Typographic Pornography, may I present an animated short that will go in depth into the history of fonts and other things that arouse the senses of graphically-inclined perverts.

You might want to watch this separate from anyone who gets off on the alphabet...If you don't there's a good chance you're going to end up in a Sans Serif pile getting baselined without your consent.

ONCE UPON A TIME: “Second Star to the Right” S2E21 (review)

By Laura Akers
One of the things I love about television narratives (especially geeky ones) is the way that they often become cross-referential: NCIS’s Gibbs describing what Ducky looked like when he was younger (“Illya Kuryakin”) Mulder and Scully showing up on The Simpsons, Richard Castle dressing up as Malcolm Reynolds (excuse me, “space cowboy”) for Halloween.

What is less enjoyable is when one show steals from another. And I’m a little worried that this is what we’re about to see on Once Upon a Time.

More on that in a minute.

This week’s episode absolutely felt like the penultimate one of the season.

Last week’s slow and somewhat scattered emotional build-up served as a good foundation for this week’s action. So many strands are coming together—Tamara and Greg’s machinations, Rumple’s regression into evil, Regina’s plans for Storybrooke, and Snow’s quest for redemption.

But that didn’t keep the writers from adding an entirely new wrinkle: the Peter Pan story.

Up, Up and Away! A Review of IRON MAN 3

$

The moment Shane Black was announced as the director and co-writer, I knew IRON MAN 3 would be a far cry better than “Iron Man 2.”

Black made his bones writing such testosterone-fueled actioners as “Lethal Weapon,” “The Last Boy Scout” and “The Long Kiss Goodnight,” and he singlehandedly resuscitated Robert Downey, Jr.’s flagging career when he cast him as the lead in the nimble comedy-noir/Hollywood satire “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” Even if “Iron Man 3” turned out to be a carbon-copy of the first two movies, Black’s involvement was sure to lend the proceedings an air of snappy sarcasm and self-referential humor.

What a refreshing joy, then, to discover in “Iron Man 3” a superhero-sized dose of what typically lacks in a giant threequel: surprise.

PLAY A BIT OF POKER Down in 'Fraggle Rock' With A Limited Edition 30th Anniversary Deck of Playing Cards

It seems hard to believe that it was 30 years ago that Fraggle Rock entered my home via stolen cable...how time flies...I was like, nine then and still full of hope that all my dreams would come true if I just believed in them hard enough.

Great, I'm all depressed now.

But I won't let my sad, pathetic existence take away from the excitement that this limited edition Fraggle Rock playing card gives me, knowing that as I play a bit of Texas Hold 'Em, I could potentially get a Royal Flush that bitch slaps me with nostalgia:

The deck, put out by The Spare Room, a gaming parlor and cocktail lounge (located in the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, CA) not only comes with some fine-looking cards festooned with all your favorite Fraggles, it also has some recipes and words of wisdom from the Spare Room as well (what this has to do with FR, I don't know, but I'm a sucker for recipes so, whatever).

You can grab your pack HERE for $10

Listen freaks, if you didn't watch the first season of the web-series Chloe + Zoë (starring Zoë Worth and Chloe Searcy) then you missed out on one of the funniest, smartest, filled with self-loathing shows about 20-somethings that have come out in a good long while (and I'm nearly 40 and I hate everything so if I say it's good, then it is).

So before you start in on Season 2 (Ep. 1 is after the break) I suggest going back and watching the first season because it's WORTH YOUR FUCKING TIME.

Seriously...I'll wait.

If you are already fan, then you're in for another hilarious season of half-assery, laziness and yes, pure, undiluted snark every Tuesday.

Oh C-Bob and Z-Bear, I've missed you so.

BATES MOTEL: "A Boy and His Dog" S1E8 (review)

By Apathy Babcock
I’m a person who has a tendency to overcommit.

I have a more than full-time job.  I do business development on the side for a start-up.  I host events, sit on panels, give talks, and try to write this blog.  I’m not virtuous, just stupid.

And sometimes when I stare at my plate, and I realize there is too much on it, there’s only one thing I can do.  I clean.

Nothing says “Apathy has backed herself into a corner” like a sweaty session with a Swiffer and some Pledge.  It’s a way to wrestle control back when control is slinking out of my grasp.

And tonight I watched Norma Bates take a page out of the Apathy Babcock playbook.  “People who need to feel in control of everything actually feel out of control on the inside,” Norman’s therapist tells her.

But Norma’s not having a therapy session, and she’s not having anyone tell her she’s lost control of herself, or suggest she ease up on her control of Norman.  Instead, she’s going to take Windex to that hulking behemoth of an outdated television and dust the hell out of the cherished family photos.

After last week, it seems like Norma should be feeling IN control.  Shelby’s dead and out of the way.  She’s got a business arrangement to bring money into the Bates Motel.

LEONARD NIMOY & ZACHARY QUINTO Get Into A Spock Snark-Off In This Audi Commercial

I'm not into cars so I don't know if this commercial for the Audi S7 supports its awesomeness or anything, but I did enjoy the two Spocks trying to one-up each other through a series of challenges while Quinto and Nimoy were being dicks to one another.

That, I totally thought was sweet.

Oh, and Nimoy singing The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins was pretty cool too.

Check it out.

DADS SAY THE DARNEDEST THINGS: A Freaks and Geeks, Mr. Weir, Supercut

I watch Freaks and Geeks repeatedly on Netflix to smooth over the fact that NBC was a giant ass-hat to refuse an adoring public a second season (yes, let's totally get rid of a smart and tightly written show, that's how you make quality television!) and while my bitterness has left what I believe to be an ulcer behind, I can only hope that there will come a day when scientists invent a smart TV chip that can be inserted into my brain stem where it will play only the shows I like FOREVER, regardless of Nielsen ratings.

Until that day, I will be content to watch this supercut of Mr. Weir (Joe Flaherty) giving strangely inappropriate advice to his awesome children Lindsey (Linda Cardellini) and Sam (John Francis Daley) which apparently revolves around the death of his friends and celebrities.

YOUR PB & J Just Got A Bit Boozier With The Jam Stand's Bourbon and Rum Infused Jams

$

I'm going to be honest with you, the whole "Artisanal" movement constructed by twenty-somethings out of Brooklyn annoys me. I mean, just because you handmade something from locally sourced material while maintaining a dedication to the organic nature of the product doesn't make it better, it makes it expensive with a side charge of self-satisfaction.

But while I may mock the whole hipster-ish business model, I am definitely going to plunk down SIXTEEN FUCKING DOLLARS for a pair of jams that are made with rum and bourbon because I probably have a drinking problem that causes me to become enticed by the idea of an booze-laden sandwich (isn't that like a first step or something?).

Am I proud of spending a lot of  money on two jars of Drunken Monkey (bananas, sugar, lime, rum, all natural pectin) and You’re My Boy BLUE-berry Jams (blueberries, sugar, bourbon, vanilla, and all natural pectin) by The Jam Stand?

Nope.

But when I am bombed at my husband's upcoming Employee Appreciation picnic, I'm not going to care.

Mad Men

The last two seasons of “Mad Men” were by far the best of the series; so far the current season — also the penultimate of the show — comes off as largely unnecessary. “Mad Men” could have, and maybe should have ended with last season’s perfect finale of Don in the bar being asked if he’s alone.

Season 6 is largely an additional spin cycle of well-covered territory.

Yet again the writers are spending time establishing that Don is shallow hypocrite who has so little emotional affect towards other people (including his family) and life in general that he wouldn’t mind if he got hit by a bus. Both Joan and Peggy continue to battle sexism in their quests to win respect and power in the workplace.

And Pete is Pete.

While there is nothing necessarily wrong with characters that never develop, they at least need to be confronted by new situations.

This is what happened on “The Sopranos.” The Tony Soprano in season 6b is largely the same Tony Soprano in season 1, but each season he’s confronted with new situations in his personal and professional life that were usually a reflection of life in the late ‘90s early ‘00s.

What I find incredibly frustrating about the current season of “Mad Men” is that Don has zero reaction to the rapidly changing world, most notably Civil Rights.

JOHN KRASINSKI & JIMMY FALLON Have An Epic Lip Sync-Off

With The Office ending next week and fans of the show struggling to deal with the crippling depression that is surely to overcome them when the fall TV schedule boots up this year, there is only the small things from the cast that we can look forward to...like John Krasinski's appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon featuring a lip sync-off so epic that it gives this Über Office fan a bit of respite from the sadness.

And, of course, helps to refill the spank bank with some more Krasinski fantasy fuel that has seemingly been running low lately.

Watch and yearn my friends.

FOG! Chats With CARRIE PRESTON About True Blood, Person of Interest, The Good Wife & More!

Interview conducted by Lauren Berkley

Even if you don't recognize the name Carrie Preston, I'd be willing to bet you most definitely have seen her face.

While her career began on the stage, Preston has been seen all over TV and movies since 1996 including My Best Friend's Wedding, Mercury Rising, Spin City, Sex and the City, The Legend of Bagger Vance, Emeril, Wonderfalls, Numb3rs, The Law & Order franchise, Arrested Development, Desperate Housewives, and Lost.   She's even worked with the iconic Woody Allen in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

But perhaps she's most known for her current roles as waitress Arlene Fowler in True Blood, Harold Finch's former fiancée in CBS's Person of Interest, and attorney Elsbeth Tascioni in The Good Wife.

I spoke with Preston via phone recently, just in time to discuss her cryptically “pivotal” role in tomorrow night's finale of Person of Interest, what's it's like to act opposite her husband, becoming a fangirl herself at Dragon*Con, and if she would ever do nudity for a role.

The List: 'Good' Movies with Bad Endings

$

As someone who has dabbled in the world of creative writing, I have to say: endings are hard….

I mean like, really, really hard.

You can create the greatest story with amazing characters and all the best intentions to change the world of storytelling as we know it. But, if you can't deliver a satisfying ending, all that hard work will be for nothing and more importantly, your audience is going to be bummed.

Which brings me to today's installment of The List - good movies with bad endings, and once you see the list you'll understand why I didn't refer to them as 'great'.

But before we get started, I want to be clear that I don't think these movies are all bad. In fact, a couple of them are very near and dear to me.

But unfortunately they've got endings which never lived up to their promising beginnings, and in a few cases, had an ending so crappy it almost managed to spoil the whole movie.

So let's begin, but be warned, there are going to be spoilers, so read carefully…

ADAM GREEN Returns to Massachusetts To Raise Money For THE ONE FUND BOSTON

$

Celebrated horror genre filmmaker, television star, and Massachusetts native, Adam Green will return to the Boston-area, from May 28 - 30, 2013, to host a series of events and raise money to help those families most affected by the tragic events that unfolded during the 2013 Boston Marathon. The events include an advanced screening of the second season of the sitcom HOLLISTON, which premieres on FEARnet June 4, 2013, a celebrity benefit and silent auction at the Worcester Palladium, and the first-ever marathon screening of all three HATCHET films, including the first public screening of HATCHET III, opening in select U.S. theaters on June 14, 2013.

Born and raised in Holliston, MA, Adam got his start making local commercials for Time Warner Cable Advertising in 1997, where he borrowed company equipment to make his first feature film COFFEE & DONUTS. In 2000, he moved to Hollywood, CA and set out to turn the film into a television series. Over a decade later, it was re-developed and re-titled HOLLISTON, and premiered on FEARnet in 2012, where it was immediately embraced by critics and audiences. Adam also made his mark on the horror genre with the 2006 slasher comedy HATCHET, which went on to become a bonafide fan-favorite worldwide franchise introducing the now iconic genre villain “Victor Crowley” to genre fans around the globe. Through ArieScope Pictures, Adam’s independent film studio, he has written, directed, and/or produced the theatrical feature films: SPIRAL, FROZEN, GRACE, and CHILLERAMA.

“I live in Los Angeles these days, but Boston is still the place I consider home,” says Green. “I’ve never forgotten where I came from and always infuse my work with Massachusetts references, whether it be showcasing the Newbury Comics logo in the HATCHET series, naming the fictitious ski mountain in FROZEN ‘Mount Holliston’, or setting my sitcom HOLLISTON in Holliston, MA. While I am just one guy, thankfully I have a body of work and a loyal and extremely passionate fan base within the horror community that I can call upon to step up and help. I think a lot of people underestimate not only the sense of community that genre fans share, but the fact that we are some of the most kind hearted and generous people you’ll ever meet. I know that the Boston chapters of the Hatchet Army and Holliston Nation will join me for this, not to mention my fans around the world that will hopefully donate to the cause online. However, the real heroes behind this are my friends at Rock and Shock and Wicked Bird Media who have worked tirelessly to make all of the arrangements, not to mention all of the various sponsors that are rising to the occasion to support all of this. I’m merely the face of an enormous heart and collective of individuals who want to help.”
Find out details for the events after the jump.
