SHOW OFF Your Flagrant Disregard For Alcoholism By Mixing Up A Couple Hundred Shots In the Sasquatch 110 oz. Cocktail Shaker

$

You know how everyone jokes about your drinking problem (and by joking I mean staging an intervention)?

Well, wouldn't it be hilarious to play bartender at your next get-together and mix up a batch of highly potent martinis with the Sasquatch Cocktail Shaker, which will hold up to 110 oz. of whatever bottle of gin you have on hand (and yes, I mean it will hold an entire bottle of gin)?

Oh the laughs.

And, best of all, you can have this ginormous ode to your little "problem" engraved with up to 5 lines of prose!

Which means, you can permanently etch each of your various rehab stays on a cocktail shaker as a testament to your own power of denial.

It'll be a real hit at your next AA meeting.

By Morayo Sayles
The Americans finished it's inaugural season delivering as much excitement as the trailers promised.

The pissing match between Elizabeth (Keri Russell) and Claudia (Margo Martindale) is ratcheting up. These women are skilled in the art of deadly insinuations, innuendos and cutting looks.

And while Elizabeth believes she has Claudia pegged and despises her for it, Claudia points out something quite true – she knows more about Elizabeth than Elizabeth even knows about herself and Elizabeth knows really nothing about Claudia.

Touché granny, Touché.

You have to respect a movie which starts with an off-screen earthquake.

Oh, wait, you don’t.

You instantly realize just how bad the movie is going to be and brace yourself for the worst.

That, in essence, is Time Walker.

A mummy movie made in the 1980s that hasn’t checked up on the advances in Egyptology or international relations regarding mummies since the 1940s.

The city of Santa Barbara faces cataclysmic destruction as Shawn Spencer (James Roday) nears success in his bid to run for mayor!

Thank heavens for the quick thinking of his trusty campaign manager Gus (Dule Hill) and the small matter of solving the murder case of the former mayor, Shawn Spencer fails in his bid, and Santa Barbara lives to bask in the sun for yet another day.

The sad silliness that is Shawn’s new found reality continues to unfold as Juliet (Maggie Lawson) gives him another ultimatum. “Tell the chief the truth” – This one rocks Shawn to the core because Juliet is asking him to give up a really big part of who he has become and his indignation is not misplaced.

INSECT FEAR: BIG BUG MOVIES OF THE 1950s

$

One of the most enjoyable subgenres of 1950s sci-fi film is the "Big Bug" subgenre, also known as the "Insect Fear" or "Giant Insect" subgenre.

Compared with giant monster movies - Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Godzilla, It Came from Beneath the Sea, etc. - Big Bug movies offered less outright death and destruction.

But they were weirder and more offbeat than typical giant monster movies.

They were also more realistic, and therefore more scary.

Even when their heyday had passed, Big Bug movies lingered on in American pop culture.  In the 1962 Mars Attacks trading cards, giant insects figured into no less than a dozen cards, as the Martians use super-science to enlarge Earth's insects and send them on murderous rampages.
In the 70s, Big Bug movies merged with Eco Terror to inspire Food of the Gods, Kingdom of the Spiders, and Bug.  In the 80s and 90s, Big Bug movies helped inspire Skeeter, Creepshow, and Mimic.  I'm sure you can add to this list.

But our business here is the 50s.

IRON MAN 3 (review)

By Stefan Blitz
Produced by Kevin Feige
Screenplay by Drew Pearce, Shane Black
Based on Iron Man by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, Don Heck, Jack Kirby and Extremis by Warren Ellis, Adi Granov
Directed by Shane Black
Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale, Jon Favreau, Ben Kingsley
Marvel Studios / Rated PG-13

There are few actors that have embraced a role so fully as Robert Downey Jr. and Tony Stark.  And in his fifth big screen appearance as Stark (Yes, I'm counting his cameo in The Incredible Hulk), the character for the first time seems real.

Establishing the backstory in 1999 (with a clever cameo of Shaun Toub reprising his role as Ho Yinsen from the first film) and then jumping to the present, several months past the events of The Avengers, the film immediately establishes a very different Tony Stark.

Sleepless, obsessed, wrought with panic attacks, Stark is a changed man.  Vulnerable for the first time onscreen, Stark is no longer the cocky asshole and instead is trying to make sense of his place and purpose.

This Saturday (May 4th) something is going to happen that may shock fans of animated shows, The Fairly OddParents will be premiering it's ninth season on Nickelodeon at 9:30 am et/pt (although, it's actually more like they've been on the air for 12 years what with the Oh Yeah! cartoon segments).

I know right? A cartoon that's lasted almost a decade that isn't The Simpsons, can you believe it?

If you are unfamiliar with the show here's a synopsis (and then perhaps, you should watch it): The Fairly OddParents follows the comedic adventures of Timmy Turner, a 10-year-old boy who overcomes typical kid obstacles with the help of his wand-wielding wish-granting fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda. These wishes fix problems that include everything from an aggravating babysitter to difficult homework assignments. With their eagerness to help Timmy, Cosmo and Wanda always succeed in messing things up. (seriously, you need to watch it).

To mark this occasion, FOG chatted with show creator Butch Hartman on what it's like to run a successful kid's cartoon and what's on the horizon for him.

Start your day with a delicious arc-reactor!

Ingredients:
4 large tomatoes
4 eggs
4 tsp olive oil
8 fresh basil leaves (or 4 tsp Italian seasoning)
8 tbsp shredded mozzarella cheese
Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper
8 tbsp fresh salsa

1. Core the tomatoes like you're ripping the core from an arc reactor. Cut just enough so an egg fits snugly inside.

2. Spread 1 tbsp olive oil around the inside of each hollowed tomato.

3. Sprinkle the inside with kosher salt, fresh ground pepper.

4. Arrange two fresh basil leaves so they form an X at the bottom of each tomato (or sprinkle in 1 tsp Italian seasoning.)

5. Crack an egg into each tomato.

6. Bake at 400˚ F for 15 minutes.

7. Remove and carefully sprinkle the cheese around the perimeter of the egg. Make sure to leave the yolk bright and yellow at the center.

8. Bake for another 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted.

9. Spread 2 tbsp of fresh salsa on a plate. Arrange an egg in the middle.

10. Serve one to each supermodel who spent the night, along with a Bloody Mary and a nondisclosure agreement.

 Bon appetit!

DON'T FORGET That This Saturday (May 4th) Is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!

I shouldn't have to tell you that tomorrow is probably the greatest day of the year for those of us in a loving, yet tempestuous relationship with comic books (FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!), but unfortunately my job requires me to make the announcement. Which means, you need to prepare yourself mentally for the onslaught of people jamming into your favorite comic book shop (if they are participating in the festivities).

So, your best bet to counteract your crowd phobia, is probably mainlining Red Bull and Valium to get a head start on dulling the pain of getting your ass possibly kicked by eleven year-old boys and girls grabbing various free issues of comics, while you are shunted face first into a corner where there's a good chance you'll be sobbing uncontrollably (I'm here for you).

Now, if you're in the loop and you know what to expect, great, but if you're new to the game (or have a kid starting to get interested in comics) this is one of those great experiences that will either get you excited about comics or, more than likely, scare you away, depending on the crowd.

Either way, it's terrific.

If you want to know what shops in your area will be a part of Free Comic Book Day, click HERE.

And, after the break, is a great little info video for the N00bs.

Now, go forth and grab some comics!

STAR TREK: THE VIDEO GAME (Xbox 360 game review)

By B.S. Walker
SET PHASERS TO STUNNED (AT HOW DULL THIS GAME IS!)

Produced by Paramount and developed by Digital Extremes, STAR TREK: THE VIDEO GAME thrusts you aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and into the role of either cocksure Captain Kirk or rational First Officer Spock as they’re locked in a desperate fight to get back some sort of Genesis-type device from re-imagined, old school favorites, the Gorn.

Unfortunately, the only thing you’ll be fighting desperately to do is stay awake in this unpolished and undercooked video game that needed another year in the developmental oven to reach its full potential.

In a storyline that takes place after the events of J.J. Abrams’ franchise reboot, but before the upcoming Into Darkness, the crew of the Enterprise is called back to active duty to help the now homeless Vulcans (courtesy of Eric Bana's Nero dropping a black hole into the middle of their planet) rebuild and get on with their lives.

But Lizardmen have crashed the party and stolen off with a key component they intend to weaponize and do bad things with.

FOG! Chats With Steven Kostanski, Writer/Director of MANBORG! Plus, We're Giving Away 3 Copies on DVD!

What's Manborg about?

Manborg is about a soldier that is killed in an epic war against hell, only to return as a cyborg in the distant future, where the world has been taken over by demons. Manborg must then team up with a rag-tag group of rebels to battle to evil Count Draculon.

Manborg infamously was shot on a thousand dollar budget. What was your greatest cost?

Probably costumes, and all the junk it took to make the costumes. I visited a lot of used sporting-goods stores to buy old hockey pads. Everything else was made out of junk and discarded materials.

What was the genesis of the film?

Manborg came about when I was watching the 80s classic The Eliminators with fellow Astron-6 member Jeremy Gillespie, and he remarked that I should make a movie called Manborg.

For some reason that’s all it took to convince me to devote 3 years of my life to making that dream a reality.

You shot over a year in your spare time to make the film. How much of the film was planned and scripted and how much was improvised once filming began?

There was a (pretty weak) script for the movie, I really relied on the actors to punch it up and make everything entertaining. Adam, Matt, Conor and Jeremy really took their roles and turned them into the charming characters that they are. Jeremy wrote the entire romantic subplot between The Baron and Mina, which I think is the best part of the movie.

Manborg utilizes a significant amount of green screen work. What equipment did you use to make the film with and what challenges were there during production and later, post production?

My mom sewed the green screen for me, and I borrowed lights from my old high school. It was a long torturous process trying to make this movie. It took about a year to shoot, and then 2 years of post-production. The biggest challenge of production was dealing with the conditions of the spaces we were in.

We shot in my garage and the dusty basement of a store. Neither were very habitable and it made filming a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Post production was especially challenging because the quality of video we shot on was so low, it made keying out the green screen a nightmare.

In conclusion, it was a good learning experience that I hope to never repeat.

The film is a love letter to genre films of the Eighties. Are there any specific influences?

The Eliminators, I Come In Peace, Robot Jox, Guyver 2: Dark Hero, Starcrash, Judge Dredd, Spawn, The Keep, Captain America 1990, Nemesis, Cyborg…and about a million others. My childhood was built on watching vhs movies. If there’s a heaven, for me it’ll be a grungy video store with endless racks full of sci-fi/horror/action movies with cool covers.

Will there be a Manborg 2? What are your future projects?

I’d love to do a Manborg 2, just not anytime soon. I’ve got a few things in the works right now. My hope is to start making movies for a little bit more than 1000 bucks.

What are you currently geeking out over?

Just got my 4 movie action-pack in the mail from Amazon: Cyclone, Alienator, Eye of the Tiger, and Exterminator 2! Can’t wait to watch them!

And to celebrate the release of Manborg, we're giving away three copies of the film on DVD!

SHOW OFF Some Serious Video Game Love With Mini Game Cartridge Jewelry

Jewelry and I have a love/hate relationship.

While I happen to love pieces that are big, weird and interesting, most of my family resents the fact that I show up to weddings or Bar/Bat Mitzvahs cloaked in various spider broaches or mini Mad Hatter hats.

I guess they're just not dignified.

But the polymer clay creations by Jess Firsoff are not only dainty enough to wear at even the most stuffy of  occasions, they are the miniature versions of the very games I loved to play back in the day (Zelda, Mario, Duck Hint. etc), making this a very nice compromise for all involved.
