MINGERING MIKE: THE INCREDIBLE STORY OF SOUL MUSIC'S GREATEST SUPERSTAR YOU NEVER HEARD

The true story of Mingering Mike is as unbelievable and gloriously happily, as it is also sadly believable and poignantly bittersweet.

For a period of time there was little this amazingly talented Giant of Soul Music, with his touch of gold, did not turn into a massive success.

"Between 1968 and 1977 Mingering Mike recorded over fifty albums, managed thirty-five of his own record labels, and produced, directed and starred in nine of his own motion pictures. In 1972 alone he released fifteen LPs and over twenty singles, and his traveling revue played for sold out crowds the world over."

A staggering discography and one which certainly would make a case for his inclusion in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or the garnering of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

That is, were it not for the fact that Mingering Mike was the fictitious creation of Mike Stevens, who, as a lonely Washington D.C. teenager in the late sixties and seventies, conjured up this extraordinary soul superstar in his bedroom...

Decades later while at a flea market, Dori Hader, an investigator/D.J. and avid R&B music collector, and his friend Frank Beylotte happened across crates of albums by Mingering Mike. The crates contained over 200 albums and singles, along with those of other alter-ego & connected performers from Stevens' various personae and numerous fictional record labels. The sleeves were brightly colored and deliciously crude, and most of all, decidedly unusual.

They noticed that strangely, all of the albums, singles and their "vinyl" contents were actually hand-drawn and painted, even down to the record grooves, with some of the albums carefully shrink-wrapped and even price stickered.

There were soundtracks, like one for an imagined Bruce Lee film, and topical anti-drug and drinking themes. It was as if anything was and could be released by this tremendously prolific artist.

Hader purchased what he could and posted his finds on some soul music sites. The sleeves quickly became a sensation, though the identity of the real artist behind the works was still unknown. Hader, realizing that the images were probably too personal, like posting someone's private diary, decided to pull them until he could find out just who was behind them.

The fuse had been lit however and the elusive and mysterious Mingering Mike was now one of the Holy Grails to be sought out by music fans, and at the same time, impossible to hear or collect.

Eventually Hader managed to track down the creator Mike Stevens, who for 38 years before had chosen not to ever reveal that he was Mingering Mike.

Hader  subsequently released a book, Mingering Mike: The Amazing Career of an Imaginary Soul Superstar, and brought to the world the story of this great Outsider Artist. Fans worldwide now include celebrities like David Byrne and D.J. Shadow. His works appear in galleries and museum exhibits.

Mike Stevens, has since made live appearances as Mingering Mike (disguised in a wig and shades) for gallery appearances and signings. An actual record label has also released some bedroom recordings that Stevens made on a reel to reel.

It took years, but at last Mingering Mike has finally become the legend he always dreamed he was.

Learning from Movies: The FAST AND THE FURIOUS Franchise!

In 2001, Vin Diesel wasn’t much of anybody.

He’d done Saving Private Ryan, Pitch Black, and Boiler Room, but he hadn’t cemented his role as an action movie star.

Then a car theft/racing movie came out, and he was unstoppable.

Not until the most recent, Fast Five, would any of the franchise score above 36% on Rotten Tomatoes (apparently, the franchise needed an inject of The Rock).

I recently got a chance to watch Fast Five the same weekend that basic cable showed The Fast and the Furious, 2 Fast 2 Furious (the only entry in the franchise with no Vin Diesel at all), and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

As much as I enjoy these movies, several things jumped out at me that I hadn’t noticed before, and I decided to make them the subject of this Monday’s column.

What you can learn, but shouldn’t, from a bunch of thieves, undercover cops, and street racers after the break

  • Girls are for sex. There are no women, only girls – and they have to look pretty. Even if they’re tough, they have to be hot. If they want authority, they have to sleep with an authority figure.
  • White people are the best. Look who has the leadership roles in these movies – they’re all white. Even when they set the movie in Japan, a white boy has to win.

    • The street is all about fast cars, motorcycles, and violence. It’s never about back-breaking poverty or getting ahead through hard work or education, or both.
    • Loyalty is more important than law and order.
    • The police will try any dirty, underhanded, trick and make any deal to get the target of an investigation. Because, you know, they don’t care about it standing up in court. They’re just going to assassinate the target anyway.
    • If you can’t color-coordinate your outfit, your make-up, and your car, then you’re just a wannabe.

      • Street racers always put extra gear in their cars – like light effects, steam nozzles, and powerful stereos. That stuff doesn’t weigh anything, right? It couldn’t possibly affect performance.
      • If you might be heading for jail, eating lots of good food is more important than sex, building a legal defense, or trying to get away.
      • No matter how much trouble someone is in, you should never force them to deal with it or get help from an authority figure. Narcs are the lowest of the low.

God only knows how misogynistic The Fast and the Furious 6 will be.

I really hope that these movies are intended to keep dumb, suburban, white kids from surviving to adulthood or forming meaningful relationships.

        Because otherwise, they’re pretty disturbing.

        Ahhh...sweet memories of computers.

I remember the very first computer I ever used was in the library at Newby Elementary School and in order to make it work, we had to insert a cassette tape into a player.

Who knew that something that strange and weird back in 1982 would be the catalyst for all the porn I happily download today.

        Thank you technology.

It's surprising that this stage didn't come between the books and the film, but now comic publisher Vertigo is making The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo into a graphic novel.

According to Variety, the DC Entertainment imprint is working with Stieg Larsson's estate and Hedlund Literary Agency to create the adaptation. Denise Mina will be writing the book with art coming from Leonardo Manco and Anrea Mutti.

The book, which would be the first of the trilogy, will come out in November. As a novel the first book has sold over 60 million copies worldwide. In the U.S. alone, the trilogy tops 17 million copies in paper with an additional 3.5 million in digital.

"We're thrilled to be adapting this incredible story into a series of graphic novels," said Vertigo's executive editor Karen Berger. "Denise, Lee, Leonardo and Andrea have such great passion for the material and stylistically they're a perfect match to bring it to comics life. Their beautifully dark and visceral work will certainly blow us all away."

WB isn't happy with the current script for Ready Player One, so a rewrite has been ordered from Eric Eason.

According to Variety, WB is still moving forward with the adaptation of Ernie Cline's novel and now Eason has signed on to rewrite the script. WB won the rights to the project in a "heated bidding war" in June 2010.

The popular book released in 2010 is about a gamer in a virtual world who's on a dangerous treasure hunt to find the fortune of the creator of the virtual world. The teenager then has to deal with rival players and corporations that also want that prize.

Eason is known for writing and directing Manito in 2002 and Journey to the End of the Night with Brendan Fraser starring. Currently he's getting acclaim for A Better Life.

New Beginnings Part III--The (Re)birth of Phoenix

        $
        0
        0

Since at least the fifth century, BC, the legend of the Phoenix has been known throughout the world.

The mythical bird that dies in, and is resurrected from, its own fiery ashes has variations in ancient Egyptian, Indian, and Persian histories among others and the Phoenix as a symbol of rebirth has remained universal for centuries.

So if we’re going to be talking about important beginnings in the X-Universe, we’d be insane not to mention the X-Men’s own resident firebird, Jean Grey.

Not this crazy, sure, but pretty damn close.

One of the original class of X-Men, and the only lady in Xavier’s debut sausage fest, Jean Grey was blessed with telepathic and telekinetic powers that manifested at a young age as she witnessed her best friend struck by a car and held her as she died.

        Yeah. That’s pretty jacked up.

But on the X-Men, she joined Cyclops, Angel, Iceman and Beast in fighting for Xavier’s dream of mutant-human harmony and became a super hero.

Although it seemed her mutant power in the 60s was to stand back in awe
        while the men got busy…

For years, Jean was just a pretty face in the crowd and long regarded as the weakest link of the team, but that all changed not long after Chris Claremont took over the X-Men in the mid 1970s.

Using her powers to protect her teammates from radiation as the space shuttle they were on plummeted to earth after a pitched battle with Steven Lang’s sentinels, Jean was presumed dead but emerged from New York’s Jamaica Bay reborn and calling herself Phoenix.

And, really, of all the things washing up in Jamaica Bay in the 1970s, that was probably the least alarming.

Her powers increased exponentially to the point where she managed to save all of reality from the machinations of D’Ken, the mad emperor of the Shi’ar Empire.

Isn’t there a rule on giving yourself a nickname..?

But Jean’s new abilities still left her susceptible to the Hellfire Club’s Jason Wyngarde and his mental manipulations were instrumental in what was definitely his greatest mistake—awakening the Dark Phoenix, a being of nigh unlimited power who, during a flip out, decided to casually consume a sun, resulting in the death of billions inhabiting a nearby planet.

Her powers alarming both her teammates and the Shi’ar Empire, Jean was taken away so she could stand trial, even though her dark side had been suppressed. Sentenced to death unless the X-Men could defeat the Imperial Guard, Jean became overwrought with guilt and sacrificed herself on the moon.

And thus ended one of the most important comic sagas of all time.

But it turned out Jean and Phoenix were actually separate entities, the real Jean being in a cocoon beneath Jamaica Bay and the Phoenix Force only having assumed her form and memories all those months.

The real Jean was discovered by the Avengers and joined her original team under the new auspices of X-Factor, her resurrection kept secret from everyone else.

Meanwhile, Madelyne Pryor, Cyclops’ estranged wife—who Scott just up and ditched when he found out his first love was back—was revealed as a clone built by Mr. Sinister who was brought to life by a piece of the Phoenix Force that survived its death on the moon.

        Scott Summers: Dick.

After Madelyne went nuts and became the Goblin Queen during Inferno, Jean Grey made her presence known to the new team of X-Men and over the years she periodically manifested Phoenix powers, though never to the level of her Dark Phoenix days…until Grant Morrison’s New X-Men run.

Even though Jean was never technically the Phoenix, she remained forever bonded to the entity and during the culmination to Planet X, she fully embraced the Phoenix Force and, fittingly, was killed in battle.

Months later, the Phoenix Force tried and failed to bring Jean back in Endsong and Warsong by Greg Pak.

Thanks to Greg Land’s art, the Phoenix Force was also extra slutty.

With Jean’s body still dead, remnants of the Phoenix Force were scattered about the cosmos, including in the body of Rachel Summers.

But those who held any part of the Phoenix Force found themselves suddenly, and violently, losing those parts just around the time Hope Summers came onto the scene, representing the rebirth of the mutant gene thought eradicated after House of M.

During the climax of Second Coming, Hope tapped into the Phoenix Force and destroyed Bastion, the suspicion arising that she was somehow Jean reborn.

With Hope being a major focus of the upcoming Avengers vs. X-Men, hints indicate that the Phoenix Force will play a prominent role in the event, with Nova seen heading towards Earth to warn of its impending arrival in Marvel Point One and with rumors that Jean Grey will finally, once again, arise from the ashes before all is said and done.

And so it appears the cycle of death and rebirth is upon the Marvel Universe once again, but what it means, and whether the Phoenix will be a force for good or evil—and whether it brings a new beginning or a final ending—will be the burning questions answered soon enough…

THE AVENGERS Will Be Seen Through Captain America's Point of View

Captain America has been the leader of The Avengers for a while in the comic book world. In the upcoming movie that will stay true and the film will be seen from his point of view.

EW reports that Whedon is using Cap as the main lens for his film. The Avengers is an ensemble movie so each character will play a large part, but Whedon has some good reasons to use Captain America.

As Whedon says, “So much of [The Avengers] story takes place from Steve Rogers’ perspective, since he’s the guy who just woke up and sees this weird-ass world.” He adds, “Everyone else has been living in it. He’s the guy that feels that sense of loss.”

Coming into the new movie with the established character, Whedon points out that "[Captain America] is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris[Evans] and I have always tried to, without making it goofy or too obvious, make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”

Talking about the other characters and their role in the film, Whedon said “You get them in a world, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D., where they fit in. And you say upfront, these are monsters. These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings? Let’s just investigate that.”

Okay, it’s 5:45 and I totally forgot about the damn COUNTDOWN TO THE RED CARPET coverage on E!

I just turned it on to see the three ‘Fashion Police’ experts - Giuliana Rancic, The Gay Guy (I think his name is George), and Kelly Osbourne (who is STILL sporting her “I’m a 78 year old Grandma in 1967” hair color (a.k.a. lavender cotton candy) - which continues to boggle my mind.

Kelly, the dress is amazeballs, but your hair? No.
Giuliana is wonking on and on about George Clooney and how nice he is, how you need to watch the “360 degreee Glam Cam”, and other crap like “Who’s gonna win best dressed on the red carpet tonight?” Blargh.

Diana Agron from Glee - LASER CUT PERFECTION!

Now, they’re playing a game called “Who’s Tat?” where they have to identify celebrity tattoos (Angelina Jolie got the Roman numeral for 13 tattooed on her arm because she’s not supersticious…isn’t that COOL?”)

THIS JUST IN – Angelina Jolie will be wearing a special edition of the earrings she wore to the Oscars in 2010!

OKAY, IT’S LIVE FROM THE RED CARPET WITH RYAN SEACREST! IT’S 6:00!!

They’ve got 25 cameras, platforms, stages, and Giuliana is just as orange as ever. Totally basketball colored.

Why does Zooey Deschanel look like she stepped off of the Laugh In set?

        She really works my nerves.

Why is Mia Farro – uh Michelle Williams wearing a headband when her hair is so short?

        Stop it please.

Looks like what’s-his-face is gaining some weight. He was wayyyy too skinny, he didn’t look right. Not Seth Rogan, but the other one. Ummm, Jonah Hill.

OH MY GOD! SHE LOOKS LIKE A ROBOT! WHAT'S WRONG WITH HER ARMS, THEY'RE SO SKINNY?

        SHE IS A BOBBLE HEAD!

Okay, I’m turning to 60 Minutes, this is getting boring. Oh look, a story about the nation of Qatar. It’s 7:27 pm.

I’m back, and JUST IN TIME to see Ryan Seacrest ask Jessica Alba this important question, “How important is it to pick the right dress?” REALLY? Seacrest, you SUCK. The time is 7:48

        Seacrest to Claire Danes -

“How is selecting a dress for “The Globes” different than picking a dress for the other award shows?”

REALLY RYAN? REALLY? You REALLY suck right about now.

Okay, it’s finally 8:00 and Ricky Gervais dove straight into it! 1 – Kim Kardashian is a whore 2 – Eddie Murphy may be gay 3 – Jodie Foster’s beaver. And she gave it a thumbs up!

Elton John was just scowling. He REALLY HATES Madonna.

Okay, it’s 8:49 – Madonna just won for best original song for a film! She beat out Mary J. Blige and Elton John – both of whom look like they’re gonna beat her up in the parking lot!

        Mary J. before the beat-down

Idris Elba won! YAY BLACK MAN!

Hey Buffy The Vampire Slayer, 1969 called, and they want their bedsheets back!

        THE VAMPIRE & BUFFY

Jessica Lange just won for American Horror Story! How sad is it to think that she looks REALLY OLD, when she just looks normal?

PS – the show has been kinda boring. But Ricky has been funny!

Okay, when Ricky introduced Madonna, he coughed after saying that she was "like a virgin." So Madge tries to fight back with her own zinger. But she's so fucking uptight, she can't deliver the lame joke! She says it like she's a robot...

"If I'm so...likeavirginRicky...thennnnn, why don't you come over and do something about it?"

**the crowd whoops and claps** "I haven't kissed a girl in a few years. On television anyway." ZING! (sort of. Nice try Madonna, don't quit your day job!)

Dear Madge. Why are you wearing a dress that's cutting your breasts like that? And the glove. No.

Awww, Angelina didn’t win for Best Foreign Film. Whatever, Brad will make it allllllllll better when you get home.

It’s 9:56 – and Sidney Potier just came on stage and got a (well deserved) Standing Ovation! This reminds me, I’m gonna watch Let’s Do It Again for some great laughs! He’s presenting Morgan Freeman with a Lifetime Achievement Award! Along with Helen Mirren, who did most of the talking. Why did she do most of the talking? They couldn't find any Black actresses to salute him? REALLY? Oh.....wait, I can't think of any who have worked with him. Hmph!

        Octavia Spencer does it right!

Okay Sofia Vergara, sit down and shut up. Whenever you talk, all I can hear are chickens clucking. And please remember, you’re no Lucille Ball, Honey.

Okay, ENOUGH with the "Mermaid" dresses, we get it. Enough already.

WOWZA, now George Clooney is saying that Michael Fassbinder can golf with his hands behind his back and just use his penis? Real classy George. My friend Mary cracked a great joke:
Q: What do you say to George Clooney's new girlfriend?
A: Nothing. Just hand her an egg timer.
        Why was Nicole Richie there?

        THE WRAP UP:
Overall, the show was boring. I think that Ricky was on stage a total of maybe 10 minutes. He got in his zingers (especially when he asked Johnny Depp if he saw his own movie), but he wasn't on long enough, and I'm DYING to know how much he got paid for that gig. He should have sat out this year, and maybe come back in two years or so to really shake things up. There was way too much whoop-dee-doo about him coming back.

Alright, I've had enough. See you at the next award show!

Deadline reports that Seth Gordon will again direct Jason Bateman (ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, HORRIBLE BOSSES) in IDENTITY THEFT, a comedy that will also star Melissa McCarthy (BRIDESMAIDS, MIKE & MOLLY).

Steve Conrad (THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS) wrote the original script which was later rewritten by Craig Mazin. It was originally intended to star Bateman with the premise of one guy stealing another's identity, but the second role has now been written for McCarthy.

Gordon is hot after directing HORRIBLE BOSSES (a horribly underrated comedy, if I do say so) which he directed following helming the geekiest documentary ever, THE KING OF KONG.

Gordon is also still attached to direct a remake of WAR GAMES.
