This year, THE GREAT ESCAPE celebrates its golden anniversary. To honor the 50th anniversary of that film’s release, we've compiled a list of our top five World War II films. From Tora! Tora! Tora! To Patton, these are some of our favorite films honoring the Second World War.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment are proud to announce that THE GREAT ESCAPE will arrive on Blu-ray for the first time on May 7, 2013. Based on a true story, THE GREAT ESCAPE is “a motion picture that entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs” (Variety).   In 1943, the Germans opened a maximum-security prison-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. By doing so, they unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military history - brilliantly portrayed by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson, and James Coburn - who worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. The Blu-ray comes fully loaded with over three hours of special features including commentary with Director John Sturges and crew, multiple making of featurettes, the original theatrical trailer and more.

ONCE UPON A TIME: "The Evil Queen" S2E20 (review)

By Laura Akers
Let me say I’m a little disappointed this week.

One of the things I like most about Once Upon a Time is that it takes fairly simple and predictable fairy tales and gives them both narrative and psychological depth. This week was short on both.

The primary thrust of “The Evil Queen” is the Queen’s animosity around Snow shortly after she has murdered Snow’s father and taken the throne from the princess and how all that impacts her in Storybrooke.

It begins in Storybrooke where she has found out that Snow, Charming, and the rest have grown a crop of magic beans in order to return the town’s inhabitants to the Enchanted Forest. When Regina learns that the goodies are planning on leaving her behind in our world (hello, why do we get to suffer, Snow?), she decides to do just that to them, burning down the bean fields and taking one plant for herself.

She does this so that she can take Henry back to the Enchanted Forest, killing the rest of Storybrooke in order to keep him for herself…so that he will love her.

YOU KINDA NEED TO KNOW Mac DeMarco

$

I have stated in the past that I am not a fan of current music simply because I'm old and stubborn, but the last couple of months have brought about a new musical obsession in the form of Mac DeMarco, a Canadian musician whose sound reminds me a bit of Bowie mixed with The Cure with just a touch of The Smiths.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "But why should we take your word that this guy is good when you openly loathe everything and are sort of a snobby asshole?"

Well, first of all, his music is heavy. And I don't mean that in a sixties/seventies kind of way. I mean that his vocals and lyrics have heft to them- they fill up your chest cavity and then sit there with you for days- unlike a lot of music that is so airy and light that they disappear the moment the song is over, leaving nothing behind but the faint smell of peppermint.

Second, he knows how to put together a music video. Music aside, we live in an era of visual medium and when it comes to reigning in fans, videos still remain a big draw, and his are rather superb. Inventive, story-based and yes, occasionally off-putting (see My Kind of Woman below) they reflect his music and his particular sense of humor (at shows he often gets naked and performs lewd acts to loosen up the crowd) which is in short supply these days.

And finally third, the guy is only 23 and is creating music that belies his age which means, there's a very good chance that we are going to see some amazing stuff from him in the future.

So check out the videos below and fall in musical love...it'll be easy.

The US Army (and the CIA) recruit a small group of outlaw bikers for a suicide mission behind enemy lines in Cambodia during the Vietnam War.

No, this has nothing to do with the 2010 movie that starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and Idris Elba.

Verdict
Flashes of brilliance amid the nihilism just barely elevate this above B-movie status.

THINK ROBOTS ARE SCARY? Well Here's A Short Film About A Serial Killer Robot That Will Make You Sh*t Your Pants

I am deathly afraid of robots.

Yes, I know it's stupid and I am aware that I will be gone from this mortal coil long before robots will be running around as house helpers (because I will kill myself if this happens) but there's this part of me that truly believes that once we humans accept robots into our lives (and I'm not talking about a sentient Roomba, I mean something with hands that can strangle me in my sleep) we have signed our own death certificate.

And this short film called ABE (directed by Rob McLellan) isn't helping the situation.

In fact, I teared up in fear and then had to run to the toilet because my bowels were starting to release itself into my pants.

Yeah, it's that fucking scary, especially the end part....oh, dear god...the end part.

Interview by Lauren Berkley
As my geek expertise goes, comics are not my strong suit, but I enjoy picking them up from time to time and I love seeing every comic book film adaptation.

A day I look forward to every year is Free Comic Book Day, when I get to visit a comic book shop and get introduced to comics, most I've never even heard of.

This year, Free Comic Book Day falls on Saturday, May 4th.

To commemorate the event, I sat down with my friend Scott Allie of Dark Horse Comics to dish about the details of his job, working with Mike Mignola and Joss "The Boss" Whedon, and why fans maybe shouldn'thave a say in movie adaptations.

MAKE A HALFWAY-TO-HALLOWEEN Jersey Devil Costume...Then You Can Spend the Remaining Months Soaking In Your Own Costume-Already-Made Superiority

It's around this time every year when I start thinking about what I want to be for Halloween.

Yeah, I know it seems soon but if you are a fan of the holiday and don't want one of those people whose main decorating talents is stretching out a bag of fake spiderwebs and then going about your day, then perhaps you can start building a Halloween costume that will make your neighbors fear for their lives while earning you bragging rights for being original.

And this Jersey Devil costume from Instructables is not only worth the time, it will definitely make it a holiday to remember.

Now, I realize that this costume is more of a dude-thing but ladies, let's talk for a second. I am so tired that some of us with vaginas use this sacred day as an opportunity to dress as a slutty version of whatever occupation or pop culture figure is in vogue, so how about embracing the season of ghoulies and beasties for once and simply create an outfit that will make all the boys come to your yard BECAUSE IT'S SO FUCKING AWESOME!

Besides, how much fun will it be for your significant bother to peel off the costume only to reveal some rather sexy lingerie that only they get to see?

Sounds good to me.

MORNING SOBRIETY Just Got A Lot More Difficult Thanks to Mama Walker's Breakfast Booze

I'm lucky. I'm a writer who works from home so if I show up to the kitchen table/work space loaded, well, it only affects me (and, quite possibly my readers). So yeah, there's a chance I might just take up Mama Walker on her incredibly inappropriate Breakfast Booze selections of Blueberry Pancakes, Maple-Glazed Bacon and Glazed Donut.

Not that I support drinking at 7am to smooth over all the self-doubt and loathing that one feels for themselves at that time of day when the rest of the world is seemingly accomplishing something with their lives while I am wearing footy-pajamas and looking at cat videos...wait, why did I make that about me?

Anyway, these bottles of flavored liquors might seem a bit sad for the morning, but you could always have a breakfast-styled dinner party for friends and load them up on headache-inducing booze while serving a variety of omelets and pastries.

That could be nice.

Or, you could drink a few bottles in a closet while crying about your pathetic life.

You know, which ever works for you.

BATES MOTEL: "The Man in Room 9" S1E7 (review)

By Apathy Babcock
When Bates Motel first aired, I was…offended?

The premiere episode shocked me, and I felt betrayed by an unexpected level of violence I somehow wasn’t prepared for, especially considering the launch landed during the Steubenville Rape Trial verdict.

It seemed like everywhere I turned in the media, “rape” was the dialog, an important dialog, but one too upsetting for me to follow into my fictional fare.

Then it snuck into my one-hour drama with brutal frankness.  I almost gave up right there without finishing the episode, and certainly without watching another.  But after a spirited Facebook dialog with friends, I realize that the original Psycho was controversially violent and shocking upon its initial release, and to be in keeping with the underlying property, the Bates Motel needed to be too.

And sadly we now live in a world where teen boys have tweeted photos of sexual assaults and attacked a major municipality with a weapon of mass destruction.

To get our attention, to push the envelope, to be shocking in twisting a sordid tale of a messed up boy and his mom, it takes a lot.  And although Keith Summers raped Norma, using his manhood as a way to violate and punish her in a highly upsetting scene, I stuck around to see Norma see his phallus, and raise him a phallic symbol when she “killed the crap out of” him with a knife.

I’m glad I did because we’re landing in a place where things are getting interesting.

Mix Tapes From The Midwest: I’m Not Down

$

I set out to make this mix as though I were making a mix for a new friend who knew nothing of my musical tastes.

I didn’t have a theme in mind, it was simply meant to be a mix of old favorites along with a few others that I wanted to hear right now and that fit well with the rest.

A theme crept in when I wasn’t looking. It’s all songs that put a spring in my step, songs that brighten my mood when I’m feeling blue.

If you’d like to hear the deluxe edition of this mix (meaning: all these songs, plus a handful of others), tune into Mix Tapes from the Midwest: The Podcast.

Side A

1. Gogol Bordello - Start Wearing Purple

My pals and I used to have Gogol Bordello dance parties. We also had Cramps dance parties and World/Inferno dance parties, but I digress... We’d put on our oddest outfits, ragged suits or voluminous skirts and of course hats, too, hats or bandanas. The only rule was that each of us had to wear one purple thing. I dare you to not dance to this wonderfully weird Eastern European punk jamboree.

I know you since you were a twenty and I was twenty / But thought that some years from now / A purple little little lady will be perfect / For dirty old and useless clown.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

2. Violent Femmes - Life Is an Adventure

My first ‘serious’ boyfriend put this on a mix tape he made for me. (By ‘serious,’ I mean, ‘the first boyfriend my parents knew about.’) It was during a miserable time in my life, and the relationship itself was miserable, but that was thirteen years ago, long enough that it no longer bothers me. And, anyway, this song has never made me anything but happy. Dig the messy folk/punk acousticness.

Nothing will bother you, / You will do what you want to. / Laughs and loves and hopes and dreams, / Action will supply the means.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

3. Alice Cooper - Escape

I met this kid once who was such a hipster that he didn’t even know who Alice Cooper was, or, at least, he pretended not to know who Alice Cooper was. I was baffled - how could you be an American kid of my generation and not know, not love, Alice Cooper? You can say whatever you want about Welcome to My Nightmare (the album this song is from), but I don’t care about critical acclaim or any of that. All I care about is that this song makes me feel good. It is, like, quintessential mid-‘70s rock’n’roll. There’s even a cowbell. What was with bands from that era and cowbells?

Don't get me wrong don't get me right / I'm not like you are / When I get home from work at night / I'm blacker and bluer / So I escape / I get out when I can / escape / anytime I can / It's all escape / I'm crying in my beer / escape / just get me out of here.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

4. Cub - Way to Go

This song is deceptively sweet. I say deceptively, cos sound-wise, it is trademark Cub - jangly indie/pop/punk with lovely harmonies. But then, listen to the lyrics. This has been one of my theme songs since I was fifteen.

Be a good girl / and do what is right - / Fuck shit up / and stay out all night.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

5. Lou Reed - I’m So Free

I probably shouldn’t love Transformer as much as I do. I know Lou has made many more interesting and experimental albums, and Transformer is one of his most mainstream accessible works. Whatever. It’s a great album, and “I’m So Free” is one of my favorite tracks. It’s got handclaps, and it’s perfect for doin’ a sassy strut down the springtime sidewalks.

Yes I am mother nature's son / and I'm the only one / I do what I want and I want what I see / huh, could only happen to me / I'm so free / I'm so free.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

6. New York Dolls - Looking for a Kiss

“When I say I’m in love, you best believe I’m in love, l-u-v.” With that nod to the Shangri-Las, the New York Dolls, my favorite sloppy glam-punk cross-dressers, blast into “Looking for a Kiss.” It’ll make you wanna say no to drugs, and yes to making out.

When everyone goes to your house, they shoot up in your room / Most of them are beautiful, but so obsessed with gloom / I ain’t gonna be here, when they all get home / They're always lookin at me, they won’t leave me alone / I didn’t come here, lookin for no fix (I know...) / I been houndin the street all night late baby / Justa lookin for a kiss.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

7. Buzzcocks - Why Can’t I Touch It?

What is ‘it?’ (Uh oh, now I have a Faith No More song stuck in my head.) I think ‘it’ is love, or the object of the singer’s affection. And this song makes me want to fall in love. I know it sounds unrequited, Pete Shelley pleading “Whyyyyyy can’t I touch it?,” but for me, it calls to mind the beginning of a crush or relationship. It makes me think of that period of time, before you’ve even kissed your crush-person, or maybe after you’ve made out a little but still don’t know what direction the relationship is going to take. To me, that not knowing, and all the attendant nervous longing, is the best part. The hypnotic, funky bass line is the sound of falling, and the angular post-punk interplay of the guitars is the sound of that dance of tension and desire.

Then it looks so real I can see it / and it feels so real I can feel it / and it tastes so real I can taste it / and it sounds so real I can hear it / so why can’t I touch it? / so why can’t I touch it?

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

8. New Order - Temptation

This song is my ultimate springtime jam. It makes me nostalgic for a time I wasn’t part of, but also for an earlier era of my own life. It takes me back to my teens and early 20s, dancing in my bedroom or riding my bike while thinking about whoever I had a crush on at the time. It also makes me think of something Aaron Cometbus once wrote. I’m paraphrasing, but it was something along the lines of: “If punks still danced, and fucked like rabbits, we wouldn’t lose so many people to the rave scene.” You hear that, punks? Dance! Fuck! Quit being boring and self-consciously hip!

Oh, you’ve got green eyes / Oh, you’ve got blue eyes / Oh, you’ve got grey eyes / And I’ve never seen anyone quite like you before / No, I’ve never met anyone quite like you before / Heaven, a gateway, a hope / Just like a feeling I need, it’s no joke / And though it hurts me to see you this way / Betrayed by words, I’d never heard, too hard to say / Up, down, turn around / Please don’t let me hit the ground / Tonight I think I’ll walk alone / I’ll find my soul as I go home.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

9. Pulp - Common People (Full Length Version)

This is just a perfect, danceable Brit-pop number. It makes me happy and angry at the same time. It makes me angry at those trust fund kids, the ones who pretend to be broke, who slum it with the rest of us, when all the while they could go back to a life of luxury if they so chose. At the same time, it makes me happy, makes me want to dance and sing (and drink and screw). This song makes being broke feel a little less awful - because at least Jarvis Cocker understands.

You'll never live like common people, / You'll never do whatever common people do, / You'll never fail like common people, / You'll never watch your life slide out of view, / And dance and drink and screw, / Because there's nothing else to do.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

Side B

1. Madness - Tomorrow’s Just Another Day

Madness were part of the 2nd wave ska revival, but by the time this song came out, they were less a ska band than they were a pop/new wave band. They had a horn section, and some ska beats, but they certainly weren’t a ska band the way, say, The English Beat, The Selecter, and The Specials were ska bands. That’s okay, though, because I love them no matter what. This tune is a gloomy little pop-thing with a note of hope that creeps in despite itself.

I need a moment to reflect / On the friendships I have wrecked / Why is it I, don't I always try? / I hear them say / Tomorrow's just another day / I hear them say / And it gets better every day.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

2. Deal’s Gone Bad - Rough and Ready

I love old Deal’s and new Deal’s, almost equally. I have seen them live, in several different incarnations, more times than I have seen any other Chicago-based band. Listening to any of their albums reminds me of some of the best nights of my life. And I do like their older stuff, from back when they sang a lot of sexual innuendo-filled tunes about pirates and sailors. That said - they’re a better band, these days. They’ve added a soul element to their blend of rocksteady, reggae, and ska, and Todd Hembrook’s vocals are just tastier than Mike Park’s were. Mr. Hembrook has some fucking pipes on him, man. This tune, from their most recent full-length, The Ramblers, is a perfect way to start off a night of partying hard.

So, seven days a week / we all work for the man / but when the sun goes down / I see the moon rise up / yeah, yeah, we assume our command.

3. Curtis Mayfield - Move On Up

This song is a classic. Soulful funk to help pick you up, to help you move on up. Listen to those horns and drums, and Curtis’ velvet voice. It will make you feel like the star of your own film. That’s what it does for me, anyway.

Take nothing less, than the second best / Do not obey, you must keep your say / You can pass the test / Just move on up, to a greater day / With just a little faith / If you put your mind to it you can surely do it.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

4. Big Star - In the Street

If you’re not familiar with the music of Alex Chilton and Big Star, you may still recognize this song as the opening theme of That ‘70s Show. It’s a different version - the one on the show was performed by Cheap Trick, of all bands. Try to forget that version, and get into this one. It’s a beautiful piece of power pop, with a touch of soul influence that Alex Chilton brought with him from his prior band, The Box Tops. This song calls to mind the lazy days of spring and summer, driving around with no particular destination in mind.

Steal your car, and bring it down / Pick me up, we'll drive around / Wish we had a joint so bad.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

5. Iggy Pop - Lust for Life

This song is about kicking junk, but I like to think it can also be about kicking the winter blues. It sure as hell isn’t about going on a cruise, and I’ll never understand why it was used in that commercial. Ah well. Once, I sang this on karaoke night at the local pub. A couple of squares in the crowd didn’t know what to make of someone who looks like me shaking my ass while singing “well, I am just a modern guy,” and they called me a fag. I think Iggy woulda been proud.

Yeah I'm through with sleeping on the / Sidewalk - no more beating my brains / With the liquor and drugs / With the liquor and drugs / Well I am just a modern guy / Of course I've had it in the ear before / 'Cause of a lust for life.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

6. The Clash - I’m Not Down

Though this song was released in 1979, it has such a ‘60s feel to it, yet it isn’t without a certain punk edge, as well. It is one of my favorite Mick Jones-fronted Clash tunes. I’ve talked so much about my love for Joe Strummer that I often overlook Mick, but without him, The Clash wouldn’t have been The Clash. One major difference between his songs and Joe’s songs is that Joe was more politically focused, and Mick had a greater pop sensibility. This song is a prime example of that. As an added bonus, it always cheers me up.

And I have lived that kind of day / When none of your sorrows will go away / It goes down and down and hit the floor / Down and down and down some more / Depression / But I know there'll be some day / When I can swing everything back my way / Like skyscrapers rising up / Floor by floor, I'm not giving up.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon /iTunes

7. Ryan Adams - To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)

This tune is so reminiscent of that country rock style of people like Neil Young and Tom Petty, with a little Bob Dylan thrown in. It’s about being sad, but it makes me glad pretty much every time I hear it. It makes me think of road trips with my best friend, her driving, my feet up on the dashboard.

oh one day when you’re looking back / you were young and man you were sad / when you’re young you get sad / when you’re young you get sad, / then you get high.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

8. Jill Sobule and John Doe - Under the Bridge

This is another song that’ll make you feel okay about being broke and down on your luck. It’s not the righteous anger of “Common People,” this is more of a ‘we’re all in this together’ tune. It’s an ode to the great recession, it’s a ‘who cares if we’re poor, we can still have fun’ song. Clap your hands, stomp your feet, and sing along.

Under the bridge, you’ll find us waiting / Under the bridge, we’ll sing a song / Under the bridge, we’ll light the fire / Under the bridge, come on, come on.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

9. NaNuchKa - Captain Sensible Calling

Yula Beeri, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and singer, used to be in the World/Inferno Friendship Society. She also had her own band, NaNuchKa. (She now performs with a new band, Yula and the eXtended Family.) Jack Terricloth, frontman for World/Inferno, joined NaNuchKa for this gorgeous duet. It’s a punky rock cabaret, and whenever I’m sitting around feeling sorry for myself, this song helps me get over it and get on with my life.

Heart breaks, I won’t talk about it / Milk spills, I won’t add to it / All you dour motherfuckers can leave your whining out of it.

Listen/Purchase: Amazon / iTunes

KRISS KROSS MEMBER Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly, Dead At 34

In what appears to be a drug overdose, one half of the 90's rap group Kriss Kross (Chris Kelly) has died at the age of 34.

The duo, who rose to stardom after their debut album (Totally Krossed Out) and the incredibly popular single Jump was released in 1992, resulted in the thirteen year olds becoming famous seemingly overnight, (an instance which also led, interestingly enough,  to the creation of the Sega CD game Make My Video where the "player" edits music videos for their songs Jump, I Missed the Bus and Warm it Up) and helped usher in the era of wearing clothes backwards on your body (a fad which I sadly involved myself in for a very short time).

While the heyday for Kriss Kross was definitely the 90s, there was a resurgence in their popularity after the two performed at So So Def's 20th anniversary party earlier this year and were rumored to make a comeback.

After their break are a few of their videos as well as their last performance.

Bullet-Point Spoiler-Free Preview: IRON MAN 3

By PJ Hruschak

I attended a sneak preview of the latest super hero movie - and spiritual sequel to Marvel's The Avengers - Tuesday night (April 30, 2013) at a local theater.

Now I realize there is already a review of Iron Man 3 on the site and another tomorrow, but there are people in the world who do not want to know too much about a movie.

And, yet, they go online and read about it (we are such a fickle race).

Go figure.

So here's my humble solution: A spoiler-free, bullet-point preview that offers slightly enigmatic, purposefully and partially vague point-on observations, hints and teases. And I like to make puns.

Iron Man 3 will be released May 3, 2013 (oddly enough, the day before Free Comic Book Day), in the US. The movie is directed by Shane Black and stars Robert Downey, Jr. (Tony Stark), Gwyneth Paltrow (Pepper Potts), Don Cheadle (Col. James Rhodes), Ben Kingsley (The Mandarin), Guy Pearce (Alridch Killian) and Paul Bettany (as the voice or Jarvis).

Feel free to add your own bullet points to the Comments section.

CRAFTY GEEK: Make A Bunch of Lucky Origami Nintendo Stars

When I am sitting on the couch, watching hours of The Office, I try to dispel the nagging feeling that I'm psychotically lazy by engaging in something creative like knitting, embroidery or origami. And, when nosy and vindictive people ask me what I did all day, I have tangible evidence that my life, while pathetic, isn't simply an exercise in avoiding adulthood and/or responsibility (although it really is....shhhhh).

Of course, this simple little exercise in creating a bunch of lucky origami Nintendo stars isn't just a perfect way to stop all that self-loathing while making something fun, you could even use it as an excuse to set up shop at a flea market and charge .50 for a scoop of these adorable little things if you were so inclined, thus making some pocket change off of creating what is essentially a way to pass the time while watching TV.

A career is born!

Conventions 101: Surviving a Geek Convention Part Two

$

0

In Part One, we shared some tips for how to prepare for a geek convention.

But what about once you get there?

The first thing you have to do at most cons is pick up your badge. Generally, there will be a fairly long line, and there’s little you can do by wait.

The good news is that, usually, these lines move fast. But still, if there’s a “preview night” or other time before the events at the con start to pick it up, it’s well worth it to try to get your badge then. Hold on tightly to your badge as, depending on the con, it may be difficult or impossible to get a replace if you lose yours.

One thing you can do while waiting in line for your badge is to learn the layout of the con. Now that you’re in the building, whatever maps might have been provided online or in the program may begin to make sense.

Figure out where the panels rooms are, how the con floor has been organized, where the bathrooms, first aid station, and autograph area is.

When programs like Duck Dynasty (A&E) and My Strange Addiction (TLC) end up on what were once awesome channels dedicated to the arts and LEARNING, it becomes apparent that we are heading toward a cultural Armageddon that will no doubt leave us functionally retarded.

But not if Bob Ross, Carl Sagan, Mr. Rogers and Bill Nye the Science Guy have something to say about it.

In this PBS Meets the Avengers parody, the guys who made PBS worthy of being bowed down to return to kick some ass and take some names while teaching people to use that mass of meat located inside their noggin.

J. Michael Straczynski (JMS) is responsible for one of the best sci-fi shows on television, prior to the Battlestar Galactica reboot, Babylon 5.

He has also upset fans with controversial runs on Amazing Spider-Man and Superman. The latter got him summarily dismissed from DC Comics and he handed the Grounded storyline over to Chris Roberson. Not many people were happy with a Superman ‘walking the country’.

He stays on the character with his equally controversial series of original graphic novels for DC, a grittier two volume Superman: Earth One hardcovers with the Shane Davis on art.

Not many books have graced the shelves since Superman: Earth One Volume Two written by JMS. This is likely because of his plan to revisit his Top Cow imprint Joe’s Comics with some creator owned series.

The first of this rebooted imprint’s titles is Ten Grand written by JMS with art by horror spooksmith Ben Templesmith. The story is based on the noir trope of having a dame walk into a private dick’s office, with an insolvable case. Here in issue #1, at the start we realize that former mob enforcer Joe Fitzgerald has touches with an angel figure, summoned by necromancy and demonology. Joe spends most of his days awaiting freelance assignments from a neighboring watering hole.

Joe is also entered into a deal with the demons haunting his world. His woman was killed in front of him, and to reconnect with his Laura, he has become an enforcer for the dark spiritual world.

This book is great, if a little heavy on the recurring themes. It is a successful matchup of noir, horror, gangster and necromantic genres. Though not a funny book, this draws similarities to Chew. This is also recommended for fans of Sandman, Lucifer and Death.
