Defiance!

Video game? TV Show? Farscape/Firefly rip-off? Science Fiction serialized drama? WWII movie starring Daniel Craig?

What is it?!? Let’s find out…

Defiance is the newest epic by writer and executive producer Rockne S. O’Bannon. Just to refresh your memory on the importance of this person, Rockne has brought us numerous Science-Fiction serial dramas over the years including: Alien Nation, Seaquest, V, and my personal favorite show of all time Farscape! (Seriously, I have a Farscape tattoo on my back left shoulder. Yes, I am a fan-boy…don’t you judge me!)

So the question here is twofold: 1) Can Rockne have success in this medium again, and 2) Why go back to Syfy?!

CONAN O'BRIEN And His Fellow Simpsons Writers Reunite For An In Depth Discussion About the Longest Running Animated Series of All Time

From 1991-1993 Conan O'Brien wrote and produced The Simpsons, writing some of the most beloved episodes (Marge Vs. the Monorail, Homer Goes to College) and leaving behind rumors that, had he stayed, he would have ended up as the showrunner.

Now, some twenty years later O'Brien and his former fellow writers (Al Jean, Jeff Martin, Jay Kogen, and Mike Reiss) sit down for an in depth interview on O'Brien's web series, Serious Jibber-Jabber, discussing all things Simpsons.

This is a serious must for any fans of the show and, at over 80 minutes, there's a whole lot of stuff to delight any Homerophile.

FOG! Chats With Writer/Director MEGAN FREELS JOHNSTON About Her New Horror Film REBOUND!

I recently had the opportunity to chat with producer Megan Freels Johnston, who is making her screenwriting/directorial debut with her film, Rebound, an old-school psychological horror/thriller.

A love letter to the genre, Rebound has more in common with the classics of the Seventies and Eighties than the "found footage", heavy CGI or torture porn varieties that have become popular of late.

The film brought together an enormously talented cast and crew and now, as the self-financed film goes into post production, Megan's using Indiegogo to help pay for the final edit and sound mix.  We discussed that, the film and most importantly, why you should support it.

Read it after the jump.

COLORADO TEENAGER'S Raging Diarrhea Issue Cleaned Up By A Dead Nun Who's Marked For Sainthood...Miracles Really Are Everywhere

When Luke Burgie was four-years old (back in 1999) he suffered from a "severe gastrointestinal condition" which was apparently cured after two Colorado Springs nuns performed a novena (nine straight days of prayers) to Mother Theresia Bonze a century after her death and who is now on the path to sainthood after the Church deemed her ability to wipe away the diarrhea, a miracle.

Of course, the condition of little Luke Burgie (who is now 18 and freaked the fuck out that his mother gave an interview to a newspaper about his anal issue) remains a bit of a mystery. Burgie was indeed suffering from some stomach issue whereby he pooped himself multiple times a day starting on his first day of preschool but, before the doctors could perform any scientific tests to see why this was happening, it stopped.

Now the Vatican has scheduled the nun for beatification this November (which is the first step toward becoming a Saint) after Pope Francis deemed the nun responsible for relieving the boy of the Hershey Squirts.

Damning with Faint Praise: TEXAS KILLING FIELDS

Mike Souder (Sam Worthington, Terminator Salvation, Clash of the Titans, Avatar) and Brian Heigh (Jeffery Dean Morgan, Watchmen, The Losers) are cops in southeastern Texas.

When bodies start turning up along an isolated stretch of road, they – especially Brian – become obsessed with finding the killer.

Verdict
I’m not sure how a move can be tense and limp at the same time, but somehow director Ami Canaan Mann (daughter of Michael Mann) pulls it off.

Mix Tapes From The Midwest: On The Road

I always get restless in the spring, after being cooped up all winter. What better way to celebrate my return to this column than a mix of traveling songs?

I’ve included folk, country, rockabilly, blues, and punk; there are songs about aimless late-night drives, songs about going on tour with your band, and songs about riding the rails.

There are songs about how good it is to travel, and songs about how sad it is to be a rover.

As always, tune into Mix Tapes from the Midwest: The Podcast to hear these songs, plus many tracks that didn’t make it into the column. Happy trails.

Last week’s episode, “Trust Me,” (pack full of juicy details and teases), was as much about control as it was about trust.

We watched Shelby manipulate Norman over the threat of the belt.  We watched Norma manipulate Norman with the idea that he sees and hears things that aren’t there.

I wondered at that moment if that’s how she “seduces” Norman, which is “enough for him to be taken away from you,” per Dylan (without specifics) – ewwww.  Even Norman has to remind his mother, “you’re not my girlfriend” when she says he is jealous over the fact she was gone at 2 am to Shelby’s, whom she now suddenly seems to like for more than just his police protection.

He’s “pretty…like an old woman."

Thanks to our friends at BBC Home video, we've got a massive giveaway featuring four DVDs: Women in Love, Spies of Warsaw, Parade's End and Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1998 featuring such stars as Judi Dench, David Tennant, Rosamund Pike and more!

Parade's End
BBC Home Entertainment presents the original 1964 mini-series starring Judi Dench newly restored from the original film masters! This 1964 film adaptation of the classic novel by Ford Madox Ford shows a young Judi Dench in one of her earliest screen roles. Considered by many as one of the pre-eminent literary works of the 20th-century Parade's End follows Christopher Tietjens (Ronald Hines) a wealthy member of Edwardian England's upper class as the country is drawn into World War One. Tietjens is at the center of a love triangle between his wife Sylvia (Jeanne Moody) a treacherous socialite who is trying to destroy him and his suffragette mistress Valentine (Dench). The warfare Tietjens encounters as an officer in Europe is but a backdrop to a personal battle of conflicting loyalties hidden passions and the rigid social expectations of his day.

Last of the Summer Wine: Vintage 1998
Join everyone's favorite trio for another season of hilarious adventures! Hoping to keep his comrades as young and spritely as ever Foggy sets up a training course to get Compo and Clegg in shape but as usual safety isn't his first concern. When the trio gets a grill from Auntie Wainwrights they have a barbecue like never before. Foggy ever the inspired inventor comes up with the idea to create bicycle safety underwear and later in the season a three man windsurfing sailboard. Finally in the Christmas special the trio plan to host a visitor from outer space or maybe just a neighboring town.

Women in Love
Rosamund Pike and Rachael Stirling star in this powerful adaptation of D. H. Lawrence's novel. Following the banning of his earlier novel The Rainbow D. H. Lawrence shocked his 1920 audience yet again with Women in Love. Combining some elements of both novels this adaptation focuses on the lives of two sisters Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen as they struggle with their own loves desires and passions and relationships with two friends Rupert Birkin and Gerald Crich. As Ursula and Birkin's friendship and love develops Gudrun and Gerald's stormy and destructive relationship begins to spiral out of control.

Spies of Warsaw
David Tennant and Janet Montgomery star in this adaptation of Alan Furst's celebrated spy novel set in Poland, Paris and Berlin in the years leading up to the Second World War. At the french embassy in Warsaw, the new military attaché, Colonel Jean-Francois Mercier (Tennant), is drawn into a world of abduction, betrayal and intrigue in the diplomatic salons and back alleys of the city. At the same time, the handsome aristocrat is involved in a passionate love affair with a Parisian woman of Polish heritage (Montgomery), a lawyer for the League of Nations. Risking his life, Mercier works in the shadows amid a remarkable cast of characters, some known to him as spies, some never to be revealed. It is a city where people drink and fight and spy and love, because no one knows what tomorrow will bring.

And we're giving away three sets of all four discs to FOG! readers!

POLITICIANS Making Awkward Rap References

$

Once upon a time becoming a politician was a noble pursuit, but now it feels that those who go into public service do so for the express purpose of showcasing their lack of social and moral skills to the very people who put them into office.

And there is absolutely no better way to view these deficiencies than when a group of politicians quote rap lyrics as proof that the world they think they are protecting is questioned by people who have written musical poetry that appeals to the disenfranchised, the young and yes, even to white folk who crave something a bit harder than frakking Taylor Swift.

So take a listen as politicians misappropriate various lyrics to further their own agenda, quote Cypress Hill and LL Cool J or simply try to figure out Snoop Dogg's name (and no, it isn't Snoopy Snoopy Poop Dog).

It's truly amazing.

THE MOST F*CKED-UP Harry Potter Animation You Will Probably See...Well, At Least Today (NSFW)

There are three things in this world that I thoroughly enjoy: Harry Potter, animation and slash fiction.

When these three things occur at the same time I am filled with a sense of bliss and satisfaction that rivals eating dark chocolate and drinking a glass of heavy red wine right before I get my period (only chicks will understand what I'm taking about).

Sometimes my job is worth all the family mocking.

How I Learnt To Accept Sports-Based Video Games

$

I'm of the opinion that there's no need for video games that simulate sports.

The very idea of them is pointless.  I mean, why play a football video game when you can go outside and play the game for real?

Sport is an activity, gaming is an activity, but that's no excuse to combine them. Sport takes place outdoors, gaming indoors. They are opposites.

Kicking a ball is fine. Pressing buttons to kick a ball is dumb.

So when my friend and podcaster Bret 'The Red Bobcat' Canny of podcast Bros and Cons, suggested a FIFA tournament with a fantasy football competition, I wasn't exactly bowled over by the idea given how I feel about sports games, namely how pointless they are.

I met his suggestion with mild indifference and apathy but decided to partake and give him £2 anyway (there was a small amount of money at stake but ultimately I am VERY competitive and wanted the honour of winning!).

Little did I know that Bret literally meant "fantasy" football as in a tournament full of fictional characters from all of my favourite geek-verses!

The chance to create a dream team of Marvel, DC, video game, 80s cartoon and Firefly characters was exactly what I needed to get excited and invested in the game.

Incidentally, this isn't my team... I lack the photoshop/MS Paint skills of my fellow managers

THEY HAVE CEREAL-FLAVORED Milk Now

$

I never understood when people would finish eating a bowl of cereal (I'm talking about good cereal here, not that raisin bran crap) yet leave the goodness of cereal milk untouched.

I mean, how can you even think of not flushing that sugar-tainted cow drink down your gullet? That's the best fucking part of the entire concept of eating dry food in a bowl...the delicious breakfast gazpacho left over, it's like a liquid kiss from the food gods for Christ sake!

But the creators of Cow Wow know what I'm talking about, considering they made an entire milk product that tastes just like the dregs of Fruit Loops and Cocoa Pebbles that you can pour into a glass.

Yeah, that's right, you can drink cereal milk WHENEVER YOU DAMN WELL PLEASE!

Am I excited?

You betcha.

And, since you can order this miracle of food and drink in one by the case, it's perfectly fine to horde it down in your basement for the End Times (it needs no refrigeration).

Life just can't get any better.

Magic Man is such a butt. He thinks it’s cool to crash Princess Bubblegum’s Princess High Tea Party with his Magic.

Meanwhile, outside Jake and Finn wish they could get in but at least have the respect to honor the only rule—princesses only!

In an attempt to silence the rantings of our favorite purple princess, Lumpy Space Princess (LSP), Magic Man casts a spell to silence her!

We could have used like, a few more panels of like, LSP calling her friend Melissa who by glob just needs to hear about this lumping party, but Jake wearing Finn as a suit dives like James Brady to stop the spell.

This saves the princesses’ voice but Finn and Jake fall silent!

The boys are able to communicate using pictures in their speech balloons, a technique only possible in comic books! Much like the recentA Glitch is A Glitch episode, AT continues to effortlessly push boundaries of all mediums. Fans of the show should be all over this book!

Our video game pal BMO is able to communicate with the boys because he is the best at emoticons. After some sammiches, they meet up with the Action Hero princesses defeat Magic Man! Princess Bubblegum has the plan to recover their voices and it totally works!

The Princesses get to save Finn and Jake for a change and LSP is among the heroes!

Don’t skip the Downton Abbey referencing 8 page BMO backup story by Jeremy Sorese. BMO’s memory banks are full, but Princess Bubblegum and Peppermint Butler have a crash plan to recover BMO from defensive mode!

FOG! Chats With FRINGE: SEPTEMBER'S NOTEBOOK Authors TARA BENNETT and PAUL TERRY

$

Last winter, Fringe ended after a five season run on Fox.  Focusing on Olivia Dunham, an FBI agent teamed with Walter Bishop, a formerly institutionalized scientist and his son, Peter, Fringe quickly evolved to become one of the densest and mythologically richest series in the history of television.  Within the show, there were the Observers, evolved humans from the future who exist out of time who have their own agenda.  One, September, became an ally to Olivia and the Bishops and his notebook documented his observations of our world.

But the introduction of "September's Notebook" didn't start with the show, but rather two writers, Tara Bennett and Paul Terry, who pitched the book as a series companion and then found it being incorporated within the series.

The book itself is gorgeous.  Packed with ephemera, it serves not only as a complement to the series, but also as it's own unique and special love letter to the fans who embraced it.

Tara and Paul were both generous enough to take time out of their busy schedules to chat with Forces of Geek about the book, the series and the process.

Symbolism and Biology of THE HORROR OF PARTY BEACH

$

I’ve seen some goofy monsters.

Hell, I like the goofy looking monsters in Island of Terror.

But sometimes, the monster is too goofy for the needs of story.

That is the case with the Horror of Party Beach, where the titular horror is right up there with The Giant Claw for the title of goofiest monster put to film.

It’s hard to watch this movie, partly because only the TV edit survives in mass media. If the original version exists, it’s apparently only available in the screen-cap comic that was made.

Also, it’s really, really a bad movie: with thirty year old teenagers and some of the dumbest lead characters I’ve ever seen. The only way to watch this one is with Mystery Science Theater 3000.
