Symbolism and Biology of the GARTHIM From THE DARK CRYSTAL

Jim Henson’s Creature Shop designs some amazing creations.  I see their name on a production, and it can get me on that alone.  It got me to watch Farscape on their work alone, and I’m glad I watched.  One of their earlier forays into the realm of non-Muppet film-making was an icon from my childhood: The Dark Crystal

This movie is absolutely loaded with amazing creatures in it. Their designs are enthralling and they all tend to have more to them than just looking cool.  One of my favorite creatures was the Garthim, the foot soldiers of the evil overlords of this high fantasy world, the demonic Skeksis

Dark Crystal, Brian Froud, Jim Henson, fantasy, Muppet

Yeah, one of the annoying things about high fantasy worlds is a lot of made up words and names.

The Garthim, however, are not your standard mook monster or stormtrooper type bad guy.  They exist for more than the heroes to defeat en mass.  Heck, the heroes in The Dark Crystal don’t really defeat many of them in the entire movie, and have to get help to do it.  They are a force to be avoided, not confronted.

FRINGE: "Liberty" & "An Enemy of Fate" S5/E12-E13 (review)

By Brian Saner Lamken
With its final episode, Fringe took us back to the first episode of its last and (to me) least season.

Much of the capper referenced past moments in the show's run, as Season Five has done to varying degrees throughout. Yet despite the fact that the answer to avoiding its despotic, dystopic future would seem to suggest another rewriting of Fringe history, the events it changed appear to be limited to those that — save for a brief flashforward late in Season Four from which the eventual Season Five sprang — followed the Season Four finale and indeed are, so far, still in our future (or would be if we were living in Fringe's world). Although Season Five has echoed and even recontextualized pivotal elements of previous episodes, it's entirely possible to view the series' bonus stretch as a thing apart, from beginning to the double-shot ending one week ago.

I've said on my own blog that the fifth season has felt oddly like AfterFringe, a spinoff of sorts, or like a revival of Fringe done at remove of some years  — never mind that it included the entire core cast and was a genuine continuation of the series proper that picked up in September from the previous May as television seasons usually do. This was not Dallas redux or Arrested Development's surprise Netflix return or The Brady Brides; this was the very thing itself, next page, albeit with a shortened order and more limited budget.

Perhaps it's best if I start with what I liked about the season finale and the finale season in general, because it's not like I just hated these 13 episodes.

The Hair Up There

If you're ever looking for inspiration on a day off, turn to The Jeffersons.

The adventures of George and Weezie movin' on up the East Side have always been a joy. There's no way I couldn't love a show with fellow Philly native Sherman Hemsley, Mary from 227 and Lenny Kravitz's mom, right?

So there I was, on my off day watching The Jeffersons, stumbled upon this guy and posted this photo to my Instagram. I was fascinated. Because there's nothing like a 1970s balding Afro, the bald-fro.

I wrote next to the photo: “As a balding man myself, maybe it's time I bring this look back? But maybe with full-on Martin Van Buren muttonchops?”

But now I'm thinking about that old rub, hair politics. And, on top of that, blerd hair politics!

Not so familiar with hair politics? Sit right down and I'll tell you a tale.

30 ROCK: "Hogcock!/Last Lunch" S7E12 & S7E13 (review)

I laughed, I cried, Liz (but really Jack) got so emotional

It's been seven excellent year with the witty stylings of Tina Fey as creator, writer and actress in 30 Rock. The series' final episode gave us pretty much what we expected and I loved every minute of it.

Laughs, tears and even excessive emotions - it was all right there on screen so we didn't have to.

It even went out in its own fashion, simultaneously mocking convention while using it to their advantage. And, yes, that even includes turning two half hour segments into an hour-long episode. And with a credit-halting moment to mark the spot where the two episode should have joined (ouch).

3D PRINTER Turns Employees Heads Into Pez Dispensers...Way To Cover Up The Lack Of Raises Being Given Out This Year Guys

Pez, 3D Printing

Hot Pop Factory is a company based out of Toronto that fashions intricately designed jewelry from 3D printers (I seriously need to get a 3D printer).

During the holidays one of their clients requested that HPF create a 3D gift for their employees that would convey their appreciation for all the hard work they did while simultaneously covering up the fact that no one was going to get raises (I'm conjecturing here).

The concept that HPF came up with was this: Personalized Pez Dispensers featuring the noggin of each employee.

Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S10E11: Icarus

Green Arrow (Justin Hartley)’s good deed gets him into trouble with an anti-hero mob and Slade Wilson (Michael Hogan) returns and battles Hawkman (Michael Shanks) in mortal combat, and it doesn’t go well for the home team.  But if there’s a silver lining it’s that Clark (Tom Welling) finally asks Lois (Erica Durance) an important question.

Season Ten hits the halfway point and the final stretch is upon us, folks…

The Random:

1. It’s good to see Chloe (Allison Mack) come back again, even if it’s just in a flashback, and she’s still making herself known thanks to little tidbits she picked up from the Helmet of Fate.

2. References to Hawkman’s repeat marriages to Shayerra by Ollie are humorous and it’s always great to see the good old Hawkman/Green Arrow banter.

3. Lois actually got through to Cat (Keri Lynn Pratt) long enough to almost make her halfway likeable by playing to her ego and revealing that the only reason her son still has a mom is because one of those vigilantes she hates has saved her life.  Twice.  That got it done.

Smallville, Superman, Tom Welling, Erica Durance, DC Comics,
I’d have loved to watch a spinoff series starring these guys.

VOICE OVER: A Short Film About Aliens, WWI, Fishing and A First Kiss All Narrated By A Guy Who Wants Someone to Die Horribly. Yeah I'd Watch That

Sci-fi short film

I'm a big believer that it is the short stories that make a bigger impact than long, drawn out tales of love, heroism and death. And the short film Voice Over (which features all three of these scenarios) not only packs them together in 9:44 minutes, it does so in a way that will make you wish all movies were that long (especially those from the Nic Cage oeuvre).

And, if you need more convincing to stop what you are doing and watch Voice Over, you should know that the film has won something like 44 awards and 80 selections and that it is a lot more entertaining that whatever it is you're doing right now.

So watch it dammit!

By Ryan McLelland
WARNING: I'm going to tell you everything that happened in the episode. If you don't want to know then stop reading. OR ELSE!  And I'm going to use everyday Archer speak which means I assume you've seen the show. If you haven't seen the show stop reading spoilers on the current episode and go buy the first season on DVD. Or Blu-Ray. Or download it on iTunes. Netflix. You get the point.

LEGS shows the pains of former field agent Ray Gillette (Adam Reed)who, after crashing in a spaceship, has lost the use of his legs. Relegated to desk duty at ISIS, Ray is not having the grandest time now having to use a wheelchair and poop in a bag. When the main ISIS team gets ready to go to Rome on a field op, Krieger (Lucky Yates) uses that time to float an idea to Ray: BIONIC LEGS! At first Ray isn't completely taken with the idea as he's seen what it has done to ex-ODIN agent Barry (Dave Willis) and Archer's ex-fiance Katya (Ona Grauer).

Ray comes around to the idea and Krieger, aided by Pam and Cheryl, gets ready to operate.

PBS OFF BOOK Takes An In Depth Look At Competitive Gaming

The Rise of Competitive Gaming and Esports

PBS Off Book has once again turned its learned eye to the impact of gaming on our culture, focusing this time on Competitive Gaming and e-Sports.

From it's humble beginnings as LAN (local area network) parties to full-blown competitions with sponsors, the arena of competitive gaming is still finding its footing (including reversing the rampant sexism still seen in the gaming world) but is it poised to become the next big "Sport"?

Featuring analysis by TL Taylor, AJ Mazur and Damien "Damdai" Dailidenas, winner of the 25th Anniversary Street Fighter II Tournament it might surprise you by just how important competitive gaming is going to get.

Take a look-see and ponder what Super Smash Bros Sunday would look like in another 25 years (I'm guessing there will be a lot of Hot Wings).

Marvel Comics Golden Age DisContinuity 001 Marvel Comics 001

Marvel Comics, Fantastic Four, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Discontinuity
One of the greatest guides to the concept of continuity in a specific series is The DisContinuity Guide: The Unofficial Doctor Who Companion by Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping, first put out in 1995. From my point of view the genius of this work is in the way the authors peel back the layers of a complex text like Doctor Who, and start back at the beginning, when we didn't know anything about the series or what it would eventually evolve into.

This allows us to see the ways in which the universe was expanded, sometimes carefully, often times not. We get to see undeveloped themes and the earliest examples of new themes.

Like an evolutionary biologist studying our small, brown furred burrowing human ancestors, we get a look at the way things were without the baggage of the way things are.

Last week we looked at Fantastic Four #4, which reintroduced the Sub-Mariner to comic readers, and effectively tied the continuity of the Fantastic Four to the Timely/Atlas comics of the 1940s and 50s. So let's look at the first issue of Marvel Comics, and see the very first appearance of the Sub-Mariner!

MY TOP 5: Best of 2012

$

Now that the Oscar nominees have been announced, I can tell you how wrong they are. Here are my five favorite movies of 2012. Keep in mind that these may be different from the ones I put on the communal Best Of list the site put together a few weeks back. Life changes and so goes my tastes. (Also, for some reason, I kept that list to five, also. I could have mentioned about 10-15 there. Oh well.)

DJANGO UNCHAINED
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino

Tarantino can rub people the wrong way. I understand that, but that doesn't mean that I choose to hang out with those people. (Spike Lee, I'm looking at you.)

His latest film is not only a fun romp through the Old South full of violence, references to older grindhouse movies (especially spaghetti westerns) and language that you wouldn't use around your African-American grandmother, but it's also a scathing indictment of racism.

No. Seriously. Whereas many of Tarantino's films are just meant to be violent fun, Django Unchained is actually ABOUT something. When violence happens to bad guys, it's splattery and hilarious. When it happens to good guys, it's brutal, realistic and disgusting. The slave fight is harrowing, disturbing and among the hardest scenes of any Tarantino film.

Beyond all of that, the movie is entertaining as hell, has amazing performances all around (special mentions to Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Don Johnson) and absolutely worthy of its spot in the pantheon of Oscar nominees.

It's Monday and you're probably still hung over from the Superbowl so let's take things down a couple of notches and chill with the relaxing indie-folk sounds of Hem and their new song Tourniquet. So really, pop open an energy drink, breathe in some flu-laden office air and enjoy Hem, you're gonna need it if you want to make it to quitting time.

(Their new album, Departure and Farewell will be out in April)

GIRLS: "It's a Shame About Ray" S2E4 (review)

This delightfully sober episode of Girls was the best yet of this season.

Hannah (Lena Dunham) presents us with an evening of dinner parties, giving us a closer look at everyone’s love life, sans her own.

HBO, Lena Dunham, Girls, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, Adam Driver

Jessa (Jemima Kirke) predictably hits foul cords with Thomas-John (Chris O'Dowd)'s parents at a hoity-toity restaurant, while Hannah hosts a New-Adult-Me themed spread at her place. The tense back and forth between Marnie (Allison Williams) and Charlie (Christopher Abbott) continues, Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) and Ray (Alex Karpovsky) face the sweet, but odd reality of their relationship, and Hannah acts as an almost wise, neutral party to everyone, all while eating bunt cake. It was enjoyable to watch everyone squirm around their respective dinner tables.

DOWNTON ABBEY S3E5 (review)

By Christopher Cerasi
The shockwaves of Lady Sybil’s death are still being felt at Downton Abbey, both upstairs and down, and in last night’s episode they colored almost all of the decisions made by our beloved characters.

But for this post we’ll focus on the upstairs inhabitants; next week is all about those below stairs.

Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) and her genuine and deep goodness have left a permanent mark on Downton, and it is most keenly felt in the heartache of her mother, Cora (the sublime Elizabeth McGovern).

Cora is still a river of ache and hurt and anger, all of it directed – and not unjustly – at her husband, Robert (Hugh Bonneville).  Lord Grantham has been a stubborn, ignorant, prudish, staggeringly old-fashioned (even for 1920), and somewhat irritating presence of late, and the rift between him and his wife is heartbreaking to watch.

It was Lady Grantham whose compassion, foresight, caution, and levelheadedness have prevailed and been the heart of Downton Abbey this season.

Indeed, the women of Downton almost always emerge stronger than their male counterparts, at least upstairs.

Technology has done tremendous things for mankind (especially the easy access to porn) but I have to say that the destruction of the hand-written letter has been my least favorite (There's something magical about opening the mail box and seeing a letter addressed to me that is not stamped with FINAL NOTICE on it).

But thanks to the avid fans of letters, the Letter Writers Alliance, you can begin your days of re-introducing the correspondence between humans once again with A PLASTIC PIGEON.

Yeah, I said a plastic pigeon.

SPRING BREAKERS: A Movie by Harmony Korine That Will Destroy Your Love of '80s Spring Break Movies

James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine

I grew up during a time when Spring Break movies were all about drinking and getting laid (Fraternity Vacation and The Sure Thing) or, quite possibly, rafting (Up the Creek).

But Harmony Korine (Kids, Gummo, Trash Humpers) has decided to take these iconic '80s movie themes and instead pack them full of chaos that includes James Franco (as a white rapper thug with cornrows) Disney virgins Vannessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson (ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars) and Korine's wife Rachel as "...hard partying bad girls" [Harmony-Korine] who go on a crime spree.

Yeah, somehow I don't think Mike the Dog is going to show up in this one.

And, since it's a Korine movie, you know there's going to be a lot of uncomfortable scenes that will not, in anyway, make you want to go Where the Boys Are.

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but I have a feeling that Disney and ABC Family are going to be grounding the girls when they get back.
