Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S9E20: Hostage

Mama Kent returns and guess who she’s bringing to dinner?

Why, it’s her new beau, none other than the wonderful and formerly drunk as a skunk Perry “Don’t Call Me Chief” White.

How’s that for a surprise, Clark?

And that’s not the only secret she’s got to reveal…

The Random:
1. Clark’s search for the Book of the Rao is handled smoothly—with him punching holes indiscriminately in various walls in his house.  He’s like Charlie Sheen in a hotel suite.

2. A sober Perry is a good development for his character and seeing how he interacts with Clark after their last encounter is enjoyable to watch.  But Clark has to be freaked out about him asking permission for his mom’s hand in marriage.

3. A massive neon sign falls and almost crushes a crowd of people while two people nearly fall to their deaths and the crowd still stands there cheering when it all works out.  Talk about jaded, huh?

“So, wait.  When you say you’re ‘tapping’ my mom, you mean
for like a source for a story, right..?”
“Uh, Clark.  Not exac…ok, let me explain this to you again.”

MY TOP 5: Movie Shootouts

So the year begins! I'm not one to go with trends, so I'm not doing a "Best of 2012" list just yet…mainly because I haven't seen a lot of the movies that people are putting on their lists.

Gimme some time and maybe I'll do one around Oscar season.

I'm ALSO not doing another list that would be perfect for January 4th.

You see, that's the day that the REAL James Bond was born in 1900. American Ornithologist James Bond lent his name to Ian Fleming for a little book called Casino Royale…you won't have heard of it.

That list, too, is coming, but I'm not quite ready to write it yet.

Luckily, January 4th was a pretty eventful year in history. What I'm going to write about was inspired by an event in 1847.

It's the day that Samuel Colt sold the first revolver to the US government, starting a gun culture that doesn't seem to be letting up. I'll try to keep my own politics out of this here article…but I can't make any promises.

I do love a great movie shootout, though.

Here are just a few of my favorites:

Marvel Comics Silver Age DisContinuity 001:Fantastic Four #1

One of the greatest guides to the concept of continuity in a specific series is The DisContinuity Guide: The Unofficial Doctor Who Companionby Paul Cornell, Martin Day and Keith Topping, first put out in 1995. From my point of view the genius of this work is in the way the authors peel back the layers of a complex text like Doctor Who, and start back at the beginning, when we didn't know anything about the series or what it would eventually evolve into.

This allows us to see the ways in which the universe was expanded, sometimes carefully, often times not. We get to see undeveloped themes and the earliest examples of new themes.

Like an evolutionary biologist studying our small, brown furred burrowing human ancestors, we get a look at the way things were without the baggage of the way things are.

In a series of posts I hope to look at Marvel Comics the same way.

The "Marvel Universe" is the place where all the various superheroes and villains of Marvel Comics live, die, come back to life and have adventures. The Marvel Universe is, at its core, a concept invented by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and other comic legends as a way to sell more comics.

If you love the Fantastic Four, did you know that their pal Spider-Man lives in the same world?

A shared continuity does more than just sell more comics, though, it allows creators to share ideas and concepts, building on the best of the past while creating startling new stories.

Today Marvel's continuity is often seen by the current crop of creators as a limitation, and is, as often as not, ignored.

Weirdly, I'm fine with that. It's the job of comics creators to produce good stories.

It's the job of obsessive nutcase fans to be concern themselves with continuity.

An Adult Nerd at Christmas

 Merry Christmas, everybody.

If you celebrated the day, whether religiously or as the secular-cultural juggernaut Christmas has become, I hope you had a good one and a good start so far to 2013.

The boxing days are upon us, and I have been going over the haul o' gifts. And this daunting realization has dawned upon me: I am the worst kind of geek, the one you can't shop for.

My tastes are very exact, my desires of products are very limited, I have most of what I want, and whatever I want, I buy myself.

If no one asks me what I want, and wants to engage in the surprise gift that showcases their thoughtfulness toward me, then they embrace risk. Whether 'tis nobler to risk getting me something I already own, or finding me something that I'd never want. This is the question.

For me, this gift trap often happens with superhero stuff.

This Christmas, I received a movie poster for Marvel's The Avengers. A huge, 24-by-36-inch poster of Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and the Gang.

And while it's awesome, and I like it, my next thought was, “I'm 32 and have no desire for this.”

Let's Go To The Movies: NIGHT OF THE COMET

So, it appears we've managed to thwart another apocalypse (thanks Mayans for getting THAT wrong) but that doesn't mean that we won't be destroyed by some horrible "End-of-the-World" catastrophe one day.

And my vote for the next apocalypse is: Killer Comet...just like in the 1984 sci-fi/horror cult classic Night of the Comet starring the super-cute Catherine Mary Stewart (The Last Starfighter, Weekend At Bernie's), Robert Beltran (ST: Voyager, Eating Raoul), Kelli Maroney (Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall) and the great Mary Woronov (Eating Raoul, Rock 'n'Roll High School) who have survived the destruction of mankind (which has rendered all humans into either piles of red dust or turned them into Zombies- ya gotta have an undead element with all apocalypse scenarios) only to find themselves fighting for their lives.

Filled with the desolate landscape of an empty metropolis, evil scientists, mutant humans and the hard rocking sounds of 80s power cords, the next end-of-days is going to be Totally Rad!

Take notes during the movie people, you're going to want to jot down some survival tips.

"She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid"

Here we are, five years in.  I've been going through a bit of a mid-site crisis (in dog years we're thirty five) and am extremely excited about some of the upcoming changes.  As we head into 2013, I'm fairly confident that Forces of Geek's evolution will titillate and entertain.

Thanks for reading, and in the words of Samuel L. Jackson's only memorable line in Jurassic Park...

Infomercial star and prostitute puncher, Vince Offer, has made a movie that is pretty much about white people being racist and homophobic while passing it off as a comedy starring Adrien Brody (?), Michelle Rodriguez, Rob Schneider and Lindsey Lohan.

Nostalgia, Shrugged and Purged

Since moving out over fifteen years ago, my parents have gradually turned my childhood room into a convenient place of extra storage.

You may have even experienced this yourself.

Every return visit home for the holidays lands me in the nostalgia of that room, but this past trip I decided to clean things up a tad, purging my room of one giant bag worth of unneeded dust collectors and box-fulls of once thought collectable collectables for goodwill.

Mego, Star Trek, Captain Kirk, William Shatner, Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy
But the purge of old school papers, comic books and deluxe letterboxed editions on VHS was not without the score of some cool  memories and attempts to pawn them off to a younger generation.

With my 10 year old nephew and 8 year old niece by my side, we pilfered through the bookshelves and desk drawers that, for some reason, I never got around to bringing to New York and my parents never felt the need to get rid of.

As hard as I tried, I couldn't convince my nephew to take my old copy of Encyclopedia Brown (he's infatuated with John Grisham's Kid Lawyer currently).  I did manage to move an unused Lava Lamp to my niece.

GOT ABOUT AN HOUR TO SPARE? Then Watch the 1985 Russian Version of The Hobbit...It' Won't Disappoint You Like The Newer Version

The Hobbit, Russian Hobbit Movie

In 1985 a production of Tolkien's The Hobbit was shot by director Vladimir Latyshev and shown on Soviet TV to the delight of everyone who happened to have a television set and were allowed to view it per the KGB (I'm speculating here).

The budget, .00001% of what Peter Jackson had for his epic, resulted in a fantastic display of ingenuity and hilarious props and costumes that made for some rip roaring hilarity that must be seen while sober.

Dear Hollywood,

In the future do you think anyone will ask where were you when The Avengers was released? I was there for the 10am showing on the first day of release and I was alone. But I didn’t care. Some things are too exciting to be shared with anyone else, anyone apart from a roomful of likeminded strangers whose verve and passion equals your own….and who also don’t have to work that day.

But I felt sludgy afterwards. Like the Ben and Jerry’s I treated myself to.  Cold and sludgy. Sick to the stomach. In a mud-like depression. Heavy and slow. I was left feeling film-noirish. Pretty uninspired. Pretty dry monologue running in my head. I thought The Avengers would complete me. The ultimate high in all my favourite strands of make believe colliding together. Instead it left me pondering why I hadn’t laughed as hard, or been as convinced by the formation of these characters as everyone else.

The Avengers, Coulson, Clark Gregg, Loki, Tom Hiddleston

I sat by the fountains where I live, and thought about Loki and how pantomime the whole film felt. Fountains seem like the kind of placeJoseph Gordon-Levitt would sit and think in 2012. But probably not about Loki.  About girls and moving into production and how he could be better, better then Franco, better then Tatum. After all, Tatum was getting credible. He had a production credit to his name. He had a biopic made about himself.

I spend a lot of 2012 hanging around water features.
