Smallville: Random, Awesome and WTF?! - S9E11: Absolute Justice

What happens when Hawkman, Dr. Fate, and Stargirl make their way onto Smallville?

The frikkin’ Justice Society of America happens, that’s what!

The JSA explode onto the screen to team up with Clark and defeat an amped up Icicle in an episode filled with all kinds of comic book madness.

My nerdy sense is totally tingling…

The Random:
1. Oh, Courtney Whitmore AKA Stargirl, you are just a great big ball of adorable.  And for those who don’t know, her character was based on writer Geoff Johns’ sister who was tragically killed in a plane crash.

2. I totally want those display cases with all the JSA memorabilia in my house, not to mention the meeting table and mural in my kitchen.  How would that not be awesome?

This would make every breakfast an adventure.

3. One of the coolest things to watch is seeing the old school vs. new school approaches of the two halves of the team, especially when it comes to Hawkman and Green Arrow.  That rivalry is great in the comics, and comes to life here and it’s nice to see Hawkman’s origin being the one of an immortal soul forced to love and lose it again and again.

4. You’d think using someone’s dying father, even a villain’s, as bait would be something heroes wouldn’t do.  And you’d be wrong.  Because that’s totally what our heroes did.

“Now let’s go find someone for me to mace the crap of, shall we?”

The Symbolism and Biology of The Ghosts From GHOSTBUSTERS

Ghostbusters is one of my all-time favorite films, and was probably the first to bring science to a supernatural scene outside of exposing a Scooby-Doo style hoax.

This movie brought pure pseudoscience to a normally solely magical occupation: ghosts and the dead.

It’s also uproariously funny.

Welcome To My Queue: THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, THE APPARITION, THE FIRST CHRISTMAS SNOW, FINDING NEMO and MEN IN BLACK 3

Fire up those queues and see what I thought of two of the summer's big sequels, The Dark Knight Rises and Men In Black 3.

Also included is a Rankin-Bass special, The First Christmas Snow, Pixar's Finding Nemo and my pick for the worst film of the year, The Apparition.

Happy watching!

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Warner Bros. / Released December 4, 2012

Batman is unquestionably my favorite fictional creation.  The character's mythology, though dense, is flexible enough to be reinterpreted by writers, artists, filmmakers, musicians, and more, all of them preserving the spirit of character.

In Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and now The Dark Knight Rises, co-writer/director Christopher Nolan and co-writers David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan have grounded Bruce Wayne in a world of crime, corruption, symbolism and revenge.  Utilizing a strong ensemble of some of the best actors working today including Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Heath Ledger, Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson, Aaron Eckhart, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Katie Holmes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom Wilkinson, Marion Cotillard, Ken Watanabe, Rutger Hauer, Linus Roache, Nestor Carbonell, Eric Roberts, Anthony Michael Hall and Matthew Modine, Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy concludes with a satisfying film that continues to explore many of the themes introduced in previous two installments.

It's eight years since the Batman took the fall for the late Harvey Dent, who had been driven mad.  By taking responsibility for Dent's criminal actions, it preserved the late District Attorney's positive work which resulted in Gotham City being a safer place.  Now, a terrorist named Bane has drawn the retired Bruce Wayne from his hermit existence and back into the costume for one final showdown, turning his back on his family, his friends and his city.

The Dark Knight Rises concludes the tale of one man making a difference; reimagining himself as more than a man, rather as a legend.  Although a far from perfect film, there are several plot holes, as well as a major issue with the passage of time, but like any good art it's flaws stimulate discussion.  Extras include second-screen experience, featurettes, and trailers.  The Dark Knight Rises is dense and sometimes muddled, but a satisfying and successful conclusion to Nolan's trilogy.   Highly recommended.

Flash in Japan: CAPE CAPERS

I have a wee confession to make.

Even though I live left-of-centre in the heart of Tokyo (actually Setagaya, about 25 minutes by train from Shibuya), lately I haven’t been thinking about Japan at all.

My brain has shelved lingua franca, ignored the neon signage, sushi train restaurants, the manga and anime - heck, even the saké.

Instead, I’ve had my head stuck in comicbooks.

And, yes, I do put the two words together (“comic” + “book” = “comicbook”) since I recently saw Stan Lee’s rant on Twitter about doing so.

No that I’m having a go at Lee regarding said rant.

What he said rang true, and the truth is I’ve been pretty much a life-long fan of The Man.

My next novel, which I actually just finished writing this week (I’m still editing and tweaking it into better shape) is called Who is Killing the Great Capes of Heropa?...and it’s an homage to what Stan Lee established at Marvel in the 1960s - the so-called Silver Age of comicbooks - aided and abetted by creative types like Roy Thomas, Jack Kirby, Jim Steranko, Syd Shores, John and Sal Buscema, Barry Windsor-Smith, Artie Simek, George Roussos and Sammy Rosen.

GEEK TECH: Gift Guide 2012

The gift-giving season is upon on us once again!

As the years go by, technology and gadgets permeate the art of gift-giving. Gadgets are better than ever, and everybody seems to want something new, and shiny, and, well, gadget-y.  And everybody else seems to want to be the person to give out the coolest, technologically shiny electronic gizmo.

Of course money doesn’t grow on trees, and the good stuff isn’t cheap, but there are some gifts that give pretty good bang-for-the-buck.

I’ve compiled a modest list of the best of the best.
